$1 MILLION FOR OBAMA IN 1 MINUTE; GRASSROOTS CAMPAIGN "AN OBAMA MINUTE" AIMS FOR MILLION-DOLLAR MINUTE ON APRIL 21ST

NEW YORK, NY: The grassroots campaign "An Obama Minute" (www.AnObamaMinute.com), a website aiming to collect $1 million in contributions for Senator Barack Obama’s presidential campaign in only one minute, announced today it has nearly reached two thirds of its goal in pledged contributions. The event will occur on April 21st at 1pm Eastern Time, the day before the hotly contested Pennsylvania Democratic Presidential Primary.

"The goal is to create a vehicle for everyday voters to organize and amplify the extraordinary value of individuals working together," said Scott Cohen, creator of the site and a Manhattan-based photographer. "The power of Barack Obama’s campaign is his ability to bridge political and demographic divides and bring people together."

Initial numbers show that pledged contributors are overwhelmingly small donors from across the country, overseas and across all demographics. In addition to the unique method of the campaign driving contributions, a number of large organizations -- including the 1.6 million member Service Employees International Union (SEIU) -- have endorsed the effort and are encouraging their members to donate to the campaign on April 21st at 1pm.

While the site is encouraging donations of  $100, the campaign was devised with math in mind that large quantities of small donations can make an enormous difference. Here’s the math:

$100 x 10,000 people = $1,000,000
$50 x 20,000 people = $1,000,000
$25 x 50,000 people = $1,000,000
$10 x 100,000 people = $1,000,000

After contributors register to contribute on www.AnObamaMinute.com, on Monday morning, April 21st, contributors will be taken directly to a donation page on the Barack Obama’s campaign site: http://my.barackobama.com/...

For contributors who are unavailable at that time, they can still be part of the effort by making a donation before April 21st at  http://my.barackobama.com/...

I'm adding my contribution. How about you? Talk about public financing of political campaigns - this is the ultimate form of public financing.

Sorry but no. My money is earmarked for someone else's campaign.

See that's the trouble with earmarks: they only matter when the money is earmarked for someone else's pet project. ;)

I don't believe in donating to politicians.

    TS, what's your objection?
  • TinSoldier said on Apr 21, 2008....
I'd rather keep my money in my own pocket, that's all!

    :D

    Fair enough, TS.

Last I heard, the Obama minute campaign raised just under $300,000 in its minute. That's still pretty extraordinary but not at all what the organizers had hoped to accomplish.

They didn't get the win in Pennsylvania they hoped for either. So, this just keeps going on. I wish there was going to be a decisive win for one of the candidates, but at this point, there can't really be.

Why? I think it's great that it's going all the way to the convention. As it should.

I just wish the Republican race was so interesting.

The conventions should be more than just an anointing ceremony and a media blessing. But then again, that's why I support open primaries/top two primaries.

TS: well, the concern is that whoever ultimately wins is gonna be beaten to hell by this process, vulnerabilities that mccain will be able to exploit quite easily.

it's like fighting against the BBEG's lieutenant, who weakens you before you confront the BBEG proper.

Well you already know that I think that the nation's primary system is a crock. Heh.

Which reminds me -- I downloaded the open primary petition for my state last night, I need to fill it out and mail it in.
