I haven't had a garden for a few years.  When I did, it was far too big for two people and I sort of got burned out on all the canning of vegetables I did.  But, this year I'm thinking I'll plant a small one.

I've already purchased some seeds for cucumbers and okra.  I plan to get some tomato plants as soon as the weather decides to stay nice.

Gardening is not my favorite pastime, but I'm willing to give it a try again.  The fresh vegetables taste so good  when  it is time to harvest them and it's kind of nice to take the overflow to family and friends when you drop by for a visit.  Plus, it gets me outside a little bit more.

The trick will be to plant it when my husband isn't around.  He plants things too deep and tamps the ground down too hard.  It makes it hard for some of it to grow.  I've learned my lesson with him trying to help plant flowers.  They never seem to live.

You would think a farm boy would know better, but it's always a "discussion".  He will always say I got bad seeds.  I seriously doubt that is the case.

That being said, my thumb is nowhere near green.  I'm not a woman who has beautiful flower beds or anything of that nature.  I've tried.  It just won't grow.  I don't have the knack for it.

Anyway, I'm going to give it a try again this year.  I'll let you know if it grows or not.

Will you plant a garden?

I would love to plant a garden. We did when the kids where little, they really enjoyed seeing their plants grow. We also had a pear tree in our backyard...they loved that. It is the one thing my oldest son misses from our old house. I just don't think I have the time to tend to it this year. The kids are older and less interested. I think I might try though next year...plan it out better.

    vacant,
When I was a kid my parents always had a big garden that I had to work in.  I can't say that I loved it as much as your kids seem to.  :-)   My niece always loved the cherry tree here though.

I'll bet you are a really good gardener.

I don't know about being a good gardener. It seemed the first year we killed more plants than what we saved...I think the rest were just lucky. I have learned a few tricks along the way though...like buying plants that are hard to kill.
The kids liked working in the garden because they were allowed to pick what they wanted to eat. We always had fresh veggies and rhubarb (which they would just eat raw). It was a good learning experience for us all. We lived in Iowa and we grew corn in our backyard...it turned into an afterschool snack. They were so much younger and easier to entertain. I miss those days!

We won't plant a garden. My husband has tried to make a go of it in the past, but we have too much shade and the soil's of really poor quality thanks to all of our oak trees. My in-laws plant a garden, and they always have plenty for canning and sharing. We'll get plenty from them. :)

My husband's ex went to a lot of trouble to put together some lovely flowerbeds--or, rather, they would be lovely if he and I had the time and desire to deal with them.

We don't have much room for a garden, but we have some very large containers/pots thanks to the people who lived in this house prior to us not wanting to move them when they moved. I have had success with planting tomato plants in the containers, so as soon as the weather gets a bit consistently warmer, I will probably plant some tomato plants.

I am also going to take a couple of the containers and plant a couple of pepper plants in them.

    Vacant,
Fresh corn would would be a cool after school snack.  :-)  I'll bet your kids have fond memories of your garden too.

    Eilan,
That's always nice when you have someone to share fresh veggies with you.  :-)  My mom and my sister can both grow beautiful flowers, but it's not my forte.  I just enjoy theirs when I visit.

    Zayda,
My mom grows tomatoes in the same fashion.  She's had great success with them too.  What kind of peppers will you plant?

CW: I haven't made up my mind about the peppers yet. I might plant some cayenne peppers or some Serrano. But then again, I might also plant some jalapeno and banana.

If I can't make up my mind about the peppers, I may just get some different varieties of tomatoes, especially some beefsteak and some grape or cherry tomatoes.

about every other year my dad gets a garden going......we've got about the only south facing slope in town, considering the mountains are to the south and they head down into the ocean to the north, but perfect for a garden this far north.

....i'm not sure he's going to this year.....he hasn't even started yet.

but i think i'll plant a few things.....
i've already got strawberry plants in the ground......it's not USUALLY too early for them here....but it's snowed TWICE since i planted them. HMMMPH. i'm not sure they'll survive.

    CW,

It sounds like your going to grow a nice pot of Gumbo.  Nothing is better than fresh Okra and tomatoes for that or Ratatoullie. I cant grow  weeds, so  I really admire people who can make things grow in the soil.   I hope the  garden works out well for you this year if you secide to plant.  Peace and Long Life

we won't be planting a garden this year.  The first year we haven't.  Neither one of us are able to plant one or keep on up now. We will truly miss having one.

    Zayda,
My nephew grows some sort of hot red chili peppers in a pot.  They love adding heat to their dishes.

I hope yours are bountiful this year.  :-)

    Fallyn,
I tried growing strawberries in a special pot once, but my dog loved them and she always ate them before I could pick them.  I guess she thought they were for her.  :-)  I hope yours turn out to be ok.

    Worf,
Thanks. One of my favorite summer meals is sliced tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, fried okra, and roast beef.  I drizzle the beef broth over the okra.  It's yummy.

I'm actually pretty good at growing weeds.  :-)

    Cry,
Maybe you can take advantage of some farmer's markets this year.  The fresh vegetables always taste so good.  Maybe you won't miss it quite as much that way.

    cw, well, we'll see.
apparently the spot i planted them in isn't as always sunny as i thought it would be.

I don't believe in torturing plants, so I will not be planting anything this year.  We live in an apartment anyways, so the best we might do is flowerpots.
  • CreativeWoman said on Apr 21, 2008....
    Fallyn,
Did you plant the ever bearing strawberries?  If they don't come up this year, maybe they will next year.  I'm not an expert on it though.

    UI,
I would grow more flowers if I could do better with them.  It seems the best I can do is morning glories because they are fairly hardy and it's difficult for me to stunt them.

    I've killed an air fern.

I'm basically the black widow of plant life.

I know some men who would do like your husband. I say they have no feeling for gardening or growing plants.  I only have a concrete garden with some pots and my husband has taken that over but I used to grow plants inside for years. I have some now but not as many as I used to. My parents had a big and lovely garden.

CreativeWoman, CreativeWoman, How does your garden grow?  With love.....ha.  I doubt if you have "bad seeds....lol.    I don't have a green thumb, either  .I could kill a cactus.   I've had luck with tomato plants though.  I would love to come snag some of your cucumbers and okra when they arrive!

Soon, I want to try to plant some flowering shrubs and maybe some flowers. But I will probably have to get help!
  • CreativeWoman said on Apr 21, 2008....
    Fallyn,
    That's pretty funny.  :-D

    UI,
I'm not much better.  At the moment, I have zero house plants.  :-)

    skald,
I'll bet the plants you have are beautiful.  :-)

    wombat,
I think I probably HAVE killed a cactus at some point.  lol  Come on over and I'll share some things from my garden with you.  :-)  Good luck with your shrubs and flowers.
