I was sitting on my couch this morning inhaling coffee and watching CNN trying to wake my ass up when my house started to vibrate and my dog started to growl. I was a little freaked out for a few minutes. I have never felt an earthquake. It's amazing how a little tremor can make you feel out of control. It might not be a big deal to people in CA but it's pretty huge around here. I have already had a dozen people call me this morning.

I was just reading a book about Tecumseh. I love that story about him stamping his feet on December 16th 1811 to cause all the houses in an Alabama Indian village to fall down and it's connection to the to the New Madrid earthquake. They say that one was an 8.0 on the Richter scale. I also heard that some sections of the Mississippi River appeared to run backwards for a while. People could feel it over a million square miles.

My house just vibrated a little and I finally got my dog to come out of her crate. I suppose it could be a lot worse.

Know exactly how you feel girl.  And having no control is frightening.

We had one in Lincolnshire, England last month that was also 5.2.  I can normally sleep through anything so it finally got through to my sleepy head just as it was coming to an end so i woke to the bed shaking like crazy and doors banging (its a very, very large heavy Kingsize solid wood bed!) and I quickly asked B what was happening close to tears. He turned round, touched me gently on the arm and said "It's alright babe, it's just an earthquake".  Ha ha - like it's the most natural thing in the world here (not).  Funny thing is I was so relieved to find out it was an earthquake rather than something supernatural lol. I kept saying "you're sure it's not supernatural?" and he said "yes dear".  So I just went back to sleep. He'd been wide awake before it happened so he's been able to rationalise straight away and so remain calm.

There was a lot of damage to homes 11 miles away at the epicentre though so we were lucky :-)

wow 5.2 is pretty significant.  I have felt them when I lived in Washington state and a couple right here in little ole vermont too.  I am glad to say I have never felt one over 5. anything.  I don't like that feeling at all.  I am glad you all are okay

There was another earthquake last night in the same place last night in Evansville IN. I didn't feel it though. There aren't any specifics about it yet.

There were two small ones before the big one in New Madrid.

I am just going through "related posts" and reading what others thought of the earthquake memyself&I posted about. Intersting the information you provided about the 1811 shaker.
