  i think it's perfectly ok to apologize in an email or thru US mail...IM, phone....

  the apology itself is more important than the manner in which you decide to deliver it in my opinion.

  I think that apologizing via email, mail, or IM is perfectly acceptable.
  
  One thing you might want to consider though is whether the person will open the email or letter and actually read it. Are you still on speaking terms with the person, or are they likely to simply not open your email or letter.

  i emailed it...he was online and so i emailed it and let him know it was there and that it was important.

  it's not important how you apologise fallyn, it's just important that you do. if you don't do it in person, express in whatever other manor that you wish you could but circumstances prevent it right now. letter, email, snail mail, skywritten or chisled into a rock doesn't matter, it's the fact that you do it that's important.

  fallyn, i think that the situation giving rise to the need for an apology might be relevant. for some kinds of things, i think a face to face apology is in order. but the sorts of things that i feel require such a display of remorse would also dictate that one should undertake the trip to visit that person ASAP. i'm getting the sense therefore that this isn't such a case. consequently, i have to agree w/ everyone else that the medium isn't the important thing here.
