No, I don't burn water.  I don't smoke out the kitchen.  I don't make anything goopy.  In fact, I can make a few things, and rather well.  But overall, my cooking skills don't amount to much...and quite frankly, I am downright embarrassed that my husband can cook better than me, yet I am the one who has more time to cook and the task usually falls to me.  I want to wow him in the kitchen, and make things he craves.  I get so frustrated with trying to figure out what to make, only to have my selection not taste as good as it looks.  We have a tight budget and are trying to lose weight, so eating out isn't a feasible option.

Buy a few calorie conscious cookbooks and keep working at it until you find a handful that you both like.  Unfortunately with cooking there is no substitute for experience.

Also, if you can take a cooking class or watch cooking shows on TV you may pick up some hints.

The most important thing is to buy the best ingredients you can afford.  This doesn't neccesarily mean expensive (though it can) but when possible buy fresh and not frozen or canned.  Buying food in season can be just as cheap and it tastes so much better.

Thanks for your tips...we both watch the cooking channel A LOT and we shop at Trader Joe's or go for the organic stuff at regular grocery stores.  I hardly ever use canned anything.  Yet, my food still doesn't taste right :(  Like last night, I made a dish and tried to follow it to the "T" and the onions were supposed to fry for 3 minutes, and so kept stirring and stirring and fried them...only, they burned slightly and I thought they were just browned and perfectly done...turns out it gave everything a slightly burnt taste.  I was so disappointed, and my hubby wouldn't eat it!

Kuni - it sounds like you're doing the right things.  Maybe trust your instincts a little more.  If the onions appear to be done, move to the next step.  My strength in cooking is baking, so I tend to make a lot of baked dishes.  If you are stronger on the stovetop go there, crockpot, oven, etc.

I am dying to eat some pizza or brownies right now.  It really feels like if I don't get it NOW I might pass out.  O.K. blogging about it is not making me feel better.  I can't eat brownies 'cause I don't have any, but that pizza is right there in the fr...
