We set off for Stykkishólmur, Pálmis village on the Snæfellsnes peninsula. The next peninsula to ours. It took us only 2 hours to drive there. But when I first visited Pálmi it took 5 hours. We have better roads now and there is a tunnel that has shortened the way very much and also a bridge. Under and over firths. Olla is Pálmis sister. Klement and Olla are also our friends. Klement is from the Faeroe Islands and is the dentist in the village. He wants to retire now. I think he is 65. We took Freyja and Þór with us. When we went Olla gave us some of her home products. Dried fish. red wine, and jam. They are so nice and friendly . Let the pictures talk. The church seen from Ollas garden.

Dried fish that Olla and Klement have prepared. Does not look great but is so very good that one can't stop when one starts eating.

Olla and Klement were going to watch basket ball on the TV. Their team from Stykkishólmur which is in the 1st devision, was competing. Usually they go but as they are going to Poland on Monday and the competition  was far away they did not this time. Olla likes to joke and see her there.

The glacier Snæfellsnesjölull seen out of the car's window. Jule vernes starts his book a journey into the center of the world there. And they go through the glacier all the way to Italy if I remember rightly.

What a wonderful day you had skald.  The sky is so very blue!  :)  Looked like a nice day!  O

Botini.  Oh how I wish I could give you some of that dried fish and take you to Olla so you could have a dip in the hot tub there. I am always so glad to see you.
Quiet.  It was a nice day my friend but we had "window weather.. " lol  Often is at this time of the year.

Its so beautiful in a very stark way.  I mean that nicely btw, there is this clearness to the sky, the warmth of family and houses that the environment is completely juxtaposed in.

I have seen dried fish like that before and been told the same thing, its addictive I'd love to try it one day.

I would love to film the environment there, seriously its gorgeous and the camera would love it!

I should bloody pay you guys for doing my location finding for me... not kidding everything I've seen Skald is stunning!

Wow!  Such a wide variety of great pictures and stories!  I know I will miss things I would have said. I would love to have some of the wine and jams, although the fish does hopefully taste better than it looks!  I love the old houses and church photo!  The siding on them looks like what we call "seersucker" fabric!   The kids look all relaxed after their hot tub.    Then there is the photo of "Siggi" with the cool tattoos.....Then the fascinating glacier---and the cemetary walls that look like they belong in a movie set!  If I ever get rich and able to go---I am moving to Iceland!

skald ~ the rest of my comment got cut off.  I was also commenting on that modern looking church.  It looks pretty cool, but odd against the background of the old house.  The architecture of some of the buildings there is just stunning.  :)  Olla looks like she could be a lot of fun too.  And Palmi and his brother look a lot alike.

Lucy. Thanks. Yes the dried fish is addictive. Would be fine having you here, filming. We are very far apart, Iceland and Australia.
Wombat.  I have never heard that expression seersucker. The houses I showed are with corrugated iron. They are timber houses and we have a lot of old houses like that. Usually the iron is painted but not when it is new. It has to weahter for two years so I guess those houses had new iron and it looks so good. I hope you come over some day.
Queen.  I would like to try your dried fish. Ours is only done like this in Iceland. It sounds great with vinegar and rice. We eat our alone with butter. I skip the butter.
Quiet.  Yes, Pálmi and Siggi look a like. Pálmi comes from a family of 9 children. His mother had 11 all together!. The church stands alone on a hill and looks very good there. Inside is a very beautiful painting done by a woman. Sorry that the rest of your comment got cut off.

Wombie.  I forgot the tattoos. Siggi was a sailor when he was young and had that done then. In those days you could not get this undone and Siggi regretted having the tattoos later. Actually I got to know him before Pálmi when I was a teenager and I wished I had a big brother like him. He became my brother in law.
He was on a ship that where my uncle was an engineer  and his son in law fist mate. I sailed wtih this ship from Holland and got to know Siggi. Pálmi was a deck hand there two years later and I got to know him. I was a passenger  then too.

Beautiful pictures Skald!  The hot tub looked very inviting and that was a pretty church.  What is the name of it?

    Hi, Skald.
Your pictures were beautiful as always.

As usual the pictures are interesting and beautiful.  I never stop being surprised at how fresh and clear  everything (including the people) are in your country.

Hi skald, that's such an interesting looking church, very modern looking.  I'm curious to know, is the fish soaked in water and cooked before you eat it?  Is it salted when it's dried?

I always enjoy seeing your photographs, skald.  Thanks!

Skaldikins, I watched a programme about the Sami reindeer herders in Norwaytoday. . .the reason I mention this is because the landscape looked almost exactly the same as in your photos.  Olla looks like such a happy cheery person, she must be fun to be with :-)

Fearing  The church has the name of the town Stykkishóls church. Thanks
    Pickers.  Thanks so much.
UI  Thank you too. Sometimes I only seem to be saying thank you but that is important too.
MissMimi.  It is salted and dried. I don't know the whole process. It is not  cooked at all. When I was little I remember men sitting out side beating it because it is so hard and has to get a bit softer before eating. Now the people who sell it soften it with some machines. This kind of dried fish is unique for Iceland and you don't get it anywhere else in the world. Thanks Mimi.
Dia  the church is unique in form. The tub was fun for the kids. Thanks
Polar. Yes, I have seen films from there and I agree. Also the highlands in Scotland look like they could be here. Olla is such a friendly and cheerful person and yes fun to be with. ((((((((((((((((((Hugs)))))))))))))))

That church is really futuristic. When I see your landscape photos I want to shoulder my backpack and start heading out to the distant mountains.
  • skald said on Apr 17, 2008....
Hotaka.  I might post a feature that looks like the church. My German friend saw that for the first time with us in the nature years ago and then the church. She saw the simelariy at once. Still many people had been speculating and saying the church looked like this or that. And they had seen this thing in the nature for years. I think I will post it for you as you appreciate such thing but now I have to rush. Thanks Hotaka
