This is fantastic!  Congratulations and good luck!  I can't think of anything good offhand for a name--but simple is usually best, I think.  As in "your name's"  Photo Shop."  Or something different and fun to get peopl'e attention if you can think of one....all I had off the top of my head was a dumb "Say Cheese Photography....."  Ha...  (that was meant to be funny)
  • uniquely-ironic said on Apr 09, 2008....
    Oohhh, congratulations!!!  This is exciting!

No bright ideas here, but I agree that putting your name on the business would most likely be a good idea.
  • Fallyn said on Apr 09, 2008....
womby...i'm so excited. *grin*...i just have to keep reminding myself to take things slow....
it kind of just took off on me.....no warning......it was an idea one day...and then the next i've already got three clients lined up once i get started....and people excited about helping me and stuff!

    i want something elegant...but whimsical.....cool.....i don't know.
  • Fallyn said on Apr 09, 2008....
    UI *grin* i'm soooo excited.
i feel so strong right now....i know it's going to be a lot of hard work......but i think i'm up to it now.
    i hope.
  • wombat said on Apr 09, 2008....

Wow!  Clients aleady is a great start!  I like the idea of "elegant."  Wish I could think of something!  All I keep coming up with are off the wall things like the "You've Been Framed" Studio and silly stuff like that.  Hope I don't lie awake tonight thinking about this.  Ha....

  • Fallyn said on Apr 09, 2008....
i love the ones you're coming up with...*laughing* but they don't quite fit. *grin* they lack a certain.....touch of elegance. :P or ....something.

  • TinSoldier said on Apr 09, 2008....
So you prefer class to humor?

How about "A Touch of Class"? (Especially if you do school photos.) Or "Touch of Elegance"?

    Umm, let me think...

    "Precious Memories"
"Da Vinci Portrait Studio" (Now there's one with chutzpah!)

I'll answer again if I can think of more. Congratulations, by the way! And good luck.
  • Fallyn said on Apr 09, 2008....
    i have some ideas.....

what do you guys think of....

    Vybrant Studios
    Vybrant Photography
    Studio Vybrant
    Vybrant Images
    Vybrant Pictures
    Vybrant Visions
    Vybrant Illusions

or another word in place of that?
  • wombat said on Apr 09, 2008....
Of course I was still being silly--but I did like "Vibrant Visions."   Opps, you spelled it differently.   Vybrant Visions.  (keeps the "V" sound together)
  • Zayda said on Apr 09, 2008....
Honestly, I would keep it simple and use your last name as the name of your studio.

    i.e. Smith Photography

I keep thinking of all the photographers we looked at for our wedding. Every single one of them used their last names as their studio; they were branding themselves--their talent, so they tied their name to it.

And well, unless your last name is Vybrant with a "y", I wouldn't use an alternative spelling for the name of your studio because the implication in the misspelling is that you aren't paying attention to the little details, like correct spelling. And you don't want to send that impression as a portrait photographer.
  • Fallyn said on Apr 09, 2008....
    zayda...that's a thought.....but it isn't going to be a traditional studio.
i mean...i can DO traditional portraiture....but it's not going to be the main thrust......
i have stuff set up for fantasy settings.....i have stuff set up for unusual locations....etc.
only half of what i will do will be traditional.
i want the name to reflect that.
also part of what i'll be doing is catering to the costumed masses at renfaires and comicons and such.

i need something that will express elegance, artistry, fantasy, all with more than a bit of an edge.
  • Twylarants said on Apr 09, 2008....
No ideas here..... but GO YOU!!!!
Put all the words you love on separate pieces of paper, throw them up in the air, grab two at a time and see how they sound together.
  • Zayda said on Apr 09, 2008....
Well, Fallyn, remember there is more to a business than just the name. Branding is about more than the name but also the slogan, which you can put on your business cards and stationary.

    So...

    On The Edge Photography

You can create a motto (of sorts) that describes your photography--elegance with an edge.

Also, those photographers I spoke of didn't just do traditional portraiture; the one we went with for our wedding for instance did some extreme location shots and offered some really cool fantasy settings.
  • TinSoldier said on Apr 09, 2008....
    "On The Edge Photography"

Ooh. I like that! It definitely has a certain cachet to it.
  • Fallen_from_Grace said on Apr 09, 2008....
I suppose the name should reflect what type of portrait photography you do.  Weddings, school photos, etc.

  • hinana said on Apr 09, 2008....
hmmm if u dont midn me asking whats your name?
you dont have to answer here..u can PM it
but my business name was farily easy to come up with as i just mixed my nickname with the service i offer..
we had thought of otehr business names but the one i went with was reeally catchy
with photography though it really seems theyre all pretty much a photgrophers first last or both names, then photography.
the big attention grabber is the motto.

  • FUBAR said on Apr 09, 2008....
I used to work in a studio many years ago and then freelanced--and made a lot more money. Working in doors always stifled me. Hopefully you will find your nitch and things will work out. Photography is a an srt and as such will always be in demand. Congrats on the opportunity,

Off the top of my head I thought your name should speak of your interest and personality but at the same time not be cliche or redundant. Anyway, I came up with Etherial Images or Imagery, Sounds whimsical and lofty and fun.
  • vacantmind said on Apr 09, 2008....
My suggestion is to work around your last name. The reason being is that people have a hard time remembering a studio name but will often times remember the photographer. If you are classy and fun to work with then it will be you they remember. Recommendations are based on how well you personally did.
So, put your last name in and if you can play with it a bit.
  • soleme said on Apr 09, 2008....
No name ideas. Just wanted to say congratulations!!!
  • Fallyn said on Apr 09, 2008....
i've been seriously thinking about this all afternoon and evening.
i think i may just use my name...i mean...it's the style i have that will be remembered..........and my name along with it....regardless of what a business is named.

but it still just sounds awfully bland.

oh..and hinana...it's not a big deal....my name is Andrea with an accent over the e. .....pronounced on dray uh.....
  • Zayda said on Apr 09, 2008....
You know, with the accent, which gives your name flair. You could simply name the business Photography by Andréa. Then come up with a motto/slogan that encompasses the variety of what you want to do.
  • Fallyn said on Apr 09, 2008....
my last name is french too. LaSomething.
  • Fallyn said on Apr 09, 2008....
zayda. *grin* how did you do that?! i used to be able to do that...and then forgot how.

  • Zayda said on Apr 09, 2008....
:) What, you don't want to go for the one name thing like Madonna or Cher or Prince?!?!
  • Zayda said on Apr 09, 2008....
Honestly, that time I copied it from MS Word. There is a combination of keys you can use to do it, but I forgot what they were.
  • Fallyn said on Apr 09, 2008....
Fubar....studio work is grueling. especially if you have to do sales between each customer.
    and 10 to 20 customers a day.
i don't want to go back to studio work.....unless i'm setting my OWN appointments.
  • Fallyn said on Apr 09, 2008....
zay...*laughing* um...not especially. but i'm hoping my last name won't be my last name forever...you know? .......
and i used to know that combo.....a long time ago.

  • polarheart said on Apr 10, 2008....
Fallyn, what an absolutely fabulous opportunity. You will be living my dream!!  Congratulations!!

    My Suggestion:

    Andrea Photographic Studios

All the very best and let us know how it all pans out and on which name you decide!

    Polar x
  • Fallyn said on Apr 10, 2008....

*laughing* D6 my daughter would ike that ......but..um.i don't think so.

polar....thankyoU! *grin* i'm still trying to fiure it out.

but after a lot of thought i think i might just stick with the simplicity of Andrea LaSomething Photography. i had a long talk about it with the guy and asked the question what am i trying to promote..myself and my talent? or growing a business? ....

and the answer is myself and my talent.....unless i come across someone that is just spectacularly talented......i don't think i'll start a business with the intent to grow it in that fashion. so what's the point of naming it something other than just my name.

  • diabolicdame said on Apr 10, 2008....
Congratulations!! Wohoo! And I think you should totally go with your own name.. Andrea Lasomething Photography.. You have such a beautiful name! Why go for anything else? Besides it kinda sounds like one of those fancy photographer names.. it really does.. Anyway best of luck to you!! May you have a greatly successful venture!
  • Fallyn said on Apr 10, 2008....
*laughing* i don't feel like one of those fancy photographers.
    thankyou though diabolic.*grin*
  • Twylarants said on Apr 10, 2008....
How strange! I think of you as Fallyn...Fal, rhyming with pal...in....Fallyn. Nope, you can't be On dray' uh LaSomething. You're Fallyn Seattle, sorry.
It's a great name for your company, though.

I have a cousin named Barbara LaSomething! Are you related?
  • Fallyn said on Apr 10, 2008....
*grin* i don't have any cousins named barbara that i'm aware of ....and i've got a LOT of cousins!!!

fallyn seattle. *GRIN* i like that.

  • Trinov said on Apr 10, 2008....
Hi, something with your name is a good idea, and even if "photography" isn't cool, it will show up when people are googling for a photographer--LaSomething's Vision Photography or something like that might be a compromise. You also need a motto. The motto can express more of what you want to be.

If you have a French keyboard option-- the accent é is in place of the 2 --and the 2 will only show if you shift. (the è is on the 7 key).

May you have good luck with this business and with the rest of your life. Somebody said that the most successful businesses are run by people who have fun doing what they are doing.
  • Fallyn said on Apr 10, 2008....
isn't that the @ key?  i'm not really sure what you meant? or do you need a number pad to do it? cause i'm on a laptop without a separate number pad.
  • Trinov said on Apr 10, 2008....
Hi, we ' installed' a French keyboard from Windows and it is an option, and I click on it and can type in French (not as bad a headache as I thought) and yes, in English it is the @ key. I used to use the character map for these things but now I can't find it--my husband is looking now--he says it is in 'system tools'.
  • Fallyn said on Apr 10, 2008....
    AHHH, that is cool.
the only thing i really need it for is that little accent whenever i type my name...which is actually pretty rare for me to type my own name.
  • hottips4u said on Apr 10, 2008....
Just curious, w/ most people owning digitized camera's, computers w/ excellent photo labs, existing photo shops thats generational and established as household names in most areas....just curious as to why a photo shop ?  Seems like a lot of established competition to face and stand out as special and more attractive to use.

As a small business owner myself, advertising and projections had to be based on several things, but being better or different is the most important factor to drawing customers away from existing businesses or garner new customers to yours.

So far I have not seen any of these matters dealt with above in any comprehensive fashion and unless you've got those, seems your going to have a row to hoe.

In any event, good luck.  Note : America is heading into a recession, money is going to get tighter, folks may or may not elect to use a studio vs. their own equipment under the current economic status of our society.

Thats all I was saying, not derogatory.   Good luck.

  • Fallyn said on Apr 10, 2008....
jessi....well, there are specialized niches i would be really good at.....i'm not thinking of opening an actual store front studio at this point.
right now i will be either going into peoples homes, (GREAT for mothers with babies, taking a baby into a studio is NOT fun), or meeting clients at a location.
and i'm not basing anything on projections of income.
basically this can't make my situation any WORSE than it already is. i'm prepared for it to fail.
i already have all the equipment i need, and i already have clients. this is partially how this all started....someone asking me to photograph her kids and pay me.....only a day after seriously thinking about starting portraiture again.....and then her friend finding out about it and asking if i could do her family on the same day....and then word spreading.....etc. etc. ....and this all in the past week. it was quite unexpected.
starting a portrait photography business was honestly the last thing from my mind......but the timing just seems to be falling into place.
i can see your concerns and i share them.....i do think i have something unique to offer in my talents...but time will tell. right now though i have nothing else going.......and cannot hold down a regular job due to all the therapy and medical appointments i have....i need something i can schedule around that stuff.
because i'm only starting on the road to wellness.

Maybe its me but I kind of think that if you keep it simple but inspiring you'll get more feedback, got to be memorable.

hi, just noting the conversation between you and hottips--and thought I could add something--one of my friends in the states started a personal chef business--(she got out of real estate about three years ago ), --and seems to be doing okay. Your idea of a niche business like this could work, if you get the word out, if your prices are attractive, etc. Inshort you need to get your message out there aggressively, for people are still getting married, having children, having birthdays anniversaries etc and you might stress 'the woman's touch' or an ethnic vision etc --somethings that would create a special client base or bases. For example: for baby and children's pictures you need a woman's eye view etc.
