One of my clients got a letter from IRS saying they are fining the client $15,000 for not getting a form in when they were supposed to. I advised the client to write a letter to IRS saying that they did send in the form on time, but it must have gotten lost in the mail, and to respectfully request that the fine be eliminated.

What a fuckin liar I am, huh? Yeah, right, lost in the mail. How bout my dog ate it?

15k?  That's fucking robbery what is on this form (in general obviously no specifics) that could be worth that much?

Unfortunately the IRS has made filing the right number of papers nearly impossible thereby making it easier to lie.  How long did this client blow them off if they imposed a $15K fine?

do you think it will work?

Sean, the form is a stupid little thing and isn't worth 15K. It just tracks how much money is in a pension plan. It's basically dry as dust. The problem is that a piece of paper didn't get to someone's desk at the IRS.

Uni, the form was due July 2005 and the govt wrote them a letter in 2007 saying "where is it, we never got it", so I sent the client an old copy of it, and they forwarded it to the govt in 2007 two years late. oops.

Secret, my guess, knowing how IRS has responded to similar things in the past, is that this client won't have to pay a penny. IRS isn't as hard assed as their reputation. I know a guy who blew IRS off for 2 years in a row, on this exact same form, and IRS finally caught up to him and asked for the 2 missing forms, and he said he has been forgetful lately, and he sent them 1 of the forms, last year. They forgave him and didn't make him pay a penny. He still hasn't sent them the other one. He's a pip. I'm thinking the guy may have Alzheimer's.

The bottom line is that no money is involved. It's not like you failing to file your taxes. Money is involved in that. This is just some stupid paper, no taxes, no money changing hands, no financial incentive to delay the form, it just fell through the cracks somewhere, shit happens.

    jeez, 15k.

Worst part is that while they are brutal bastards they aren't stupid  I get the impression that lf's client could afford the 15 k, sure he'd be pissed off but he wouldn't actually be in debt or forced to live on the streets.
  • Fallyn said on Apr 07, 2008....
great big companies probably just pay it......not worth the bother of saying HEY WAIT A MINUTE>
  • SeanRenaud said on Apr 07, 2008....
It really isn't.  It's the same reason why none of us do the math ourselves when we buy grocereries and stuff.  We know that say 60 dollar worth of stuff should come out to 65 and some change but if it hits 66 most of us don't ask to have it rung up again we just kinda strug.

The guy is a dermatologist. He could afford it. As rich people go, he's a small fry, maybe like $300,000 a year or something.

Enough that 15k is like, hmm what is this.  I think that might be my couch.

My car didn't even cost $15,000, oh I forgot, I don't have a car. Ha!

I've lied before about the post, and filled out a statutory declaration stating that I did post a letter when I didn't.  If I hadn't, I wouldn't have been accepted into university (it was my enrolment form).  So fuck it, I say!  As if bureaucracies don't lie to us, or "disguise the facts" of a matter.  Even if your client can afford it, it's the principle of the matter.  The IRS should waste their time on genuine issues, not simply be trying to raise revenue.

How about - "the check is in the mail" - without actually sending off the check

Hehehehe.. lol.. What's a little lie here and there? I think it makes life easier.. ;-)

It doesn't really matter the amount of the fine or the client's occupation, just the mere fact people let themselves be intimidated by this "agency" is absurd. What

This country must do is absolutely refuse in any way, shape or form to cooperate with these thieves, until a major reformation takes place within this agency.then all of us will be subject to their perverse tactics of abuse.
