A old friend of mine and I were discussing immigrant reform issues and then the topic naturally veered towards race and racism. My friend was completely convinced this whole immigration thing is about being illegal, and the tax and welfare situation. Though I believe that this is definitely what's being presented as the case, the real impetus behind the situation is race. If the "illegal aliens" in this country were actually all from, say, western Europe, from places like Ireland or England, then this issue would never have surfaced. But because there is hostility towards Mexico, and have always been, it's a great target and alibi. It's all about race in the end.
Here's a recent local level example: The Duke Lacrosse Case. Had the victim been white, then this wouldn't have been sensationalized and the defendants would have been thrown in jail. But because the victim is black, it's a media circus and they're not letting her story off so easily.

You may be right. I always wonder when people talk about the racism, they reallly meant it or just the natural reaction when things going on between different colors, if something happened on the people with the same color, will anybody see it from the racism view? -

It's not about race. It's about rich vs. the poor. If both parties were poor, this would have never happened. The case would be over. And if both were rich, then they would have settled. That's the end of the story. -

It's completely about race. Wake up, people, blacks and white aren't equal in this country yet, and probably never will be. The people who think this is about class need to get your heads out of the ground and see how things really are. If this was a black on black case, then the media wouldn't have cared. No one cares about blacks hurting other blacks. But since these are privileged white kids, the media is going to rip the victim apart. If it was a white victim, the media would have never torn her apart and questioned her past, etc. It's cause she's black. And she just happens to be poor. -

I personally think it's about money and class. If all of the blacks were rich from the start, and all of the whites were poor and once slaves, the same things would be happening. Look at all of the white bums and white trash people in middle America. No one cares about them.
