Plato once said that “the first and best victory is to conquer self.” When one fails to conquer the little tyrant in him, then he would most likely fail in life.

We often note that certain individuals are born leaders. But I believe that everybody is born to lead. Every person, without exception, has to lead himself. Failing that, he cannot even begin to lead others. This is the reason why Plato himself acknowledges that the “first victory” is conquering and leading oneself.

interesting, although i think we see altogether too many cases of people who've conquered others but never themselves. ed

i think, perhaps, we have difficulty conquering ourselves because in american society, at least, we are conditioned/brainwashed to not be ourselves and fit in. so, too many people lose their true selves and become someone they are not. if you become someone you are not, it's a little difficult to conquer the self. i am one who has become someone she is not, which was a painful experience, but i have begun the beautiful journey of being who i am. i like myself much better this way. (in fact, that prompts an idea for a new post later.)

zayda, the strong influence of the environment and the enveloped and pre-determined set of norms of certain societies often mold individuals into someone they're not. this is indeed a painful experience, just as what you have experienced. but i am happy to note that you have embarked on a journey to re-discover and ultimately conquer yourself. godspeed!

and to conquer oneself is not easy, therefore it's called a first victory once you succeed

No man is truly free, until He has conquered himself, and As Zayda rightly observed, the american society id one that drives on approval, rather than authenticity of one's self...My best wishes to Zayda for her journey unto her true self.

There are some more questions and less answers on leadership. I picked up on these in a recent blog. One controversial question is whether George W. Bush is an effective and good leader? If he is not, how did he get elected to be the president of the most enlightened nation in the World? If so, why do very few including the massive amounts of people who must have voted for him in two elections, now confess to this?
