I've been meaning to ask if anyone knew the answer to a question someone asked. I thought I knew everything....ha...  But I had no answer to this, because I know next to nothing about stock trading.

But every day on the news (well weekdays at least, I guess) they show the "closing bell" on the New York Stock Exchange.

Sometimes it is up.  Sometimes it is down.

But no matter which way it went--they show a bunch of people behind a podium clapping and happy as can be.

The question:   Why are those people clapping when the "Dow Jones average fell 2 points" or whatever?

I pretended to know the answer and just said, "Well, I guess they are just glad another stressful day is over--whether they lost or made money."

Stupid answer to a good question.

Does anyone have a better one?  Care to enlighten me?

    Yep,

When the NYSE was first created it was based on a resource based system as US currency was not widely accepted, shortly after the war of 1812, the british tried to collaspe the US ecomony by using privateers to capture us commerical ships. as a resourced based system each ship that was sunk affected the value of the NYSE. tradition held that at the end of each day the bell would be rung for each ship that made it safely to port, over time it just became tradtion to ring the bell twice and cheer, hope that helps

Cussane:  Is this still April Fool's Day?  You had me right to the end.... and I'm still not sure if you aren't telling the truth.  I am gullible, as well as stupid about things like this!

Have you ever noticed most of the trading seems to take place in the last few hours before closing ?  Most of the power rollers involved in high investment trading are actually working closer together then you would ever suspect. I have lost so much money over the last few years that I no longer trust stock market investment firms they in my opinion are all working together. I know I may sound paranoid but so be it. The only truly safe investments to make are the purchase of highly valued metals - GOLD      As far as those folks clapping at the end of the day . . . they're laughing at me  for all the money I lost during this last session. They are happy because they can go home now and ice down their sore hands from clapping and watch "deal or no deal" and get ready to play the same game tommorow.                         All in all a stupid answer to an stupid question.

For some reason I could not stop thinking about this silly question yesterday, god, I need to drink more, anyways, did a lot of research last nightand here is what I found. The NYSE is built is a rectangular fashion, from the north end and the far east end you cannot see the time clock that shows when the NYSE opens and closes. also the registar seats (those offices where people register stocks to trade) are directly above the clock so they cannot see it either. so that is why the bell, even if you cant see the clock the bell can be heard throughout the whole building, btw if you are caught trading stocks prior to or after the bell it is a $ 5000.00 fine per traded stock. as for the clapping, that took a little bit more hunting and the only thing i could find was a statement wriiten by Henry Wales Wallace, the 2nd chairman of the NYSE which stated that "demonstrations of financial sucess at the NYSE should not be so blatant as to discourage those who have not met thier own challenges of the day, a simple show of gratitude to our maker for a successfull day and for the opportunity of tomorrow should suffice" HWW, NYSE Chairman 1864-1903 There you go Cussane BTW yes, once again i did so make all of this up

Hey Cussane , sign me up I want to buy some of that !

cayenneman, i hate to say it but you do sound paranoid.

my guess is that the traders on the floor of the exchange are clapping b/c remember that the dow, like any other index, only reflects the general health of the market. to extend the health/medical metaphor, though: imagine if you will that the traders are all white blood cells in various spots in a human body. even if the body is healthy overall, the white blood cells may be working feverishly to fight off a cold; if the person is sick, the cells in, say, the foot, are kicking back w/ a few cold ones b/c they don't have much to do.

in like fashion, traders are buying/selling and even in a down market, someone is making money. the guys who are clapping are the someone.

Fallyn:  hmmm. is right. I know it was a silly question, but I kept thinking about it and thought I'd ask.

    Ifbno7: I like your answer!

skald:   I wonder about the stupidest things sometimes!

CayenneMan:  Thanks for the response.  That was funny about "going home to watch Deal Or No Deal with sore hands...."

Cussane:  Are you sure you made all that up?  Sounds about right to me!

silverwhisper:  Great answer!  I hadn't guessed that only the "succcessful ones" of the day were crowded around the podium--but that makes alot of sense.

    Thanks all for your responses!
