short version: soldiers (and certain civilian contractors) received e-mails that led them to a phishing site. however, it was a security exercise. long version here.

commentary: i believe that this is actually a good thing—it helps the pentagon understand what possible security issues they might have among the soldiers (and contractors) and increasing security in this way is obviously a good thing! i am mildly concerned that the department whose name was used for this security exercise was out of the loop on this—but then again, i understand that kind of snafu is status quo in the armed services.

    I can see why they do this. I don't know that I totally agree with doing it, but since they already do, I can at least grasp how it's useful.

    my suspicion is it's a lead-up to seeing whether they want to employ e-mail or the like to distribute information to soldiers, myself.
