My dad called me today. My Nana is in the hospital with pneumonia.

He was on his way to visit her again when he called -- apparently she's been in the hospital for a few days now, but it wasn't serious enough to bother calling me about until today.

Anyway, I don't know exactly how bad she is or what her prognosis is like. She's the youngest of my three grandparents, but by far the most frail. My dad sounded strained, and he's a Zen master most of the time. That has me worried. :(

I'm waiting to hear back from him tonight as to whether it's to the point I should be thinking about making a visit while I can. Any prayers or positive thoughts you could spare for Nana would be very much appreciated.

I'm really sorry about your nana :-( I hope she's alright. Keep us posted about what happens though if you can. I will definitely keep her in my thoughts and you too! I hope it turns out okay. Is she fairly close by that you can go see her easily?

Update (I'll get back to you guys here in a while, when the baby drops off):

I just called my dad (9pm EST) and he said that she's getting oxygen but not on a ventilator or anything, and she can't really talk (her throat is sore from her mouth-breathing and the upper GI she had the other day), but she's alert and responsive.

She had a mild heart attack since she's been in the hospital (she went in on *Monday* - grrr to them for not telling me until today, but apparently it wasn't as serious then as it is now), and my dad and his four siblings are taking turns spending the night there. That doesn't sound too good to me, and my dad sounded like shit when I talked to him.

Thank you for all of your support, prayers, thoughts, good vibes and well wishes. Nana can certainly use them. I'm trying to be there for my dad right now, if he'll let me, and I'll keep posting updates as I get them.

Infernal......i hope your Nana is not suffering and would spend a peaceful night. Pneumonia is not pretty.

My mother-in-law had it. It was so sad seeing her going around chained to that tank of oxigen..... she was so vibrant and full of energy before the illness forced her to that  wheel chair.

    Hugs to you and your family {{hugs}}

Update: They put a feeding tube in to try to get some nutrition back in her, but my dad said that if she stays relatively stable for another couple of days, they might let her go home with my aunt (who has some medical training) staying with her, or let her go to a rehab facility while she gets better. Sounds good to me! :)

Thanks again for all of the prayers, thoughts, and well wishes for her. :) I'll update if anything else major happens, but right now we're all feeling pretty optimistic.

I'm sorry that your Nana got sick!  It's a really scary thing when older folk go into the hospital.  My Grandpa has given me that scare several times!  I'm glad to read that things seem to be looking optimistic though!  I'm hoping for a speedy recovery and that she get to leave that mean ol' hospital soon!  I don't know anyone who actually likes being there!  I'm making some good wishes for her :)  Take care!

infernal, minor or no, a hospital visit isn't something that i would mention off-handedly about a family member! i'm glad she's doing better, though. i'm gonna chalk this up to a panic reaction and not thinking things through re: not keeping you in the loop.

is there another update re: her prognosis?

Thank you Leafy, lioness, Jack, tizzy, and ed. :)

ed, I don't have any news since my last post update. As far as I know, she's going to be going home/to a rehab facility on schedule (not that I know when or anything). I'll probably call my dad again tonight or tomorrow to check on things.

And yeah...I do think my dad was quietly freaking out. Everyone else probably assumed he would tell me, so when he didn't at first, nobody realized the ball got dropped. Then he realized a few days later and called me and my brother. I'm going with that, anyway. ;-)

  • silverwhisper said on Apr 04, 2008....
yeah, that definitely sounds like the way of things, infernal--the way you've described your father previously makes clear that no other explanation is remotely logical, IMHO.

i've got my crossables crossed, infernal. :>

What is the cure for a loss of appetite? Recently, I cannot seem to eat much food, nor do I have the desire to eat. I am not sure why exactly, but I have experienced this in the past and have no idea how I got back to eating....
