I remember as a child eating sugar on snow.  It was so good almost like a "taffy".  we would scoop up the snow (no yellow snow allowed) and an adult would then pour the golden amber syrup over the snow.  We then would take a fork and twirl the sugar snow around it and chow down the gold!

It was the Vermon Maple Festival this last weekend where many sugar houses participate in open houses so visitors can see how sap turns into profitable maple syrup.  No, it does not come out of the trees that way.. It is a long process of boiling the water out of the sap that is taken from the trees by a spout that is drivin into the tree.  The sap is clear looking like water, and tastes very bitter.  It still amazes me even after all these years the wonder of nature and the syrup we get from these trees!

In the older days, buckets with little "v" lids were used to catch the sap after the tap was drilled and placed.  Now in more modern days, the people who collect the sap have tubing that is run from tree to tree and collected into a large vat beside a road for easy collecting to take back to the sugar house.
This is why Vermonters take pride in their maple trees... the same ones that offer up such vivid colors in the fall offer up some very delicious syrup in the spring.

The snow that we get this time of year we call "sugar snow".  It is usually very heavy and doesn't last long.  It makes for good snow to pour the syrup over and also good conditions for making syrup as the days get warmer and the nights are still cold... the sap begins to run in the trees.

(Clearing my throat again....)  Thanks for the interesting info about sugar snow and how they get the maple syrup!  I will check out the link in more detail in a few.  I didn't quite understand why they called it "sugar snow" until you explained it so well here!   I did hear that the cost of buying it has gone up.  Hubby was saying how it was so cheap when he was younger, and was amazed at the cost now--but I know it is good!  I bought a small bottle last year--didn't have it on snow, though.

wombie ~ hahaha... I am glad you had so much to say!! Did I leave you speechless??
  • wombat said on Mar 31, 2008....
No, I saw a message from you so just went back to that...ha.  I am just chasing you around to irritate you now...tee-hee.....
  • quietone said on Mar 31, 2008....
You aren't irritating me any worse than those men in the basement are... getting on my nerves they are.  Yes, the price of the syrup has gone sky high along with everything else.
  • wombat said on Mar 31, 2008....
You have men in your basement?  Are they chained?  (Ha.....)
  • quietone said on Mar 31, 2008....
No they aren't chained, but they will be "whipped" if they don't do a good job!  LOL

secret ~ the last time I had sugar on snow was about 8 years ago when we did the festival and stopped at a sugar house.  It was good, but not as good as I remember when I was a kid for some reason!  yes, I bet your children would love it too.
  • quietone said on Mar 31, 2008....
wombie ~ yup, by the sounds, I am getting the whip out...  it does not sound good.

LOL!!  I loooooooooooooove maple syrup, it is just the best on waffles with ice-cream - yummitty yum!  Of course I have never had it on snow. . .if I come to visit you in the winter one time you'll have to treat me to sugar snow :-) (I wont be on diet then LOL)

I've read about collecting sap for maple syrup and have had true maple syrup a couple of times.  I would love to actually experience the whole thing, and sugar snow sounds like a great childhood memory.

I love sugar snow ~ I miss it too.  My family had a vacation home in the White Mountains in NH and we had a beautiful maple tree out front.  We had a friend who taught us about it and my eyes were so wide as I saw the tap go into the tree and then the sap ~ it was like magic to my six year old eyes.

I've been craving some sugar on snow, perhaps I ought to make a visit north for old time sakes.

Thanks for giving my soul a happy beat.

Mariah ~ I like the maple butter on toast! But, unfortunately I can't have any of that anymore (diabetic)  :(
  • quietone said on Mar 31, 2008....
polar ~ if I had my "druthers" these days, I'd do just fine w/o sugar on snow.  I would stick to syrup on waffles!  You would have to come visit early spring... like this time of year, as sap only runs for the making a short time, but I would gladly give you a tour of a sugar house!   :)
  • quietone said on Mar 31, 2008....
pickers ~ yes its pretty darn tastey.  I had forgotten about the maple butter til just now when answering mariah.  The thing is, it doesn't even have one smigin of sugar IN it!
  • quietone said on Mar 31, 2008....
uniquely ~ when I moved to the west coast, I would always be sure to bring back a can of syrup when I visited home.  Sorry Aunt Jamima... it just ain't the same.  LOL
  • quietone said on Mar 31, 2008....
Mindfulone ~ I am glad I brought back some fond memories for you too!  :)   It is amazing how something so clear and bitter can come out of a tree and end up so sweet!  One of natures little miricles I guess.  Thanks for stopping by.

Quiet......i have to shameful admit of not having taste a syrupy ice cone in my life........but it sounds very syrupoulsy delicious....lol....

If you prepare a sugar cone for me in exchange i will make you taste our Italian "grattachecca".......its very simple...

The ice is shredded from a big block and put in a cup. On top they pour you any possible 'sciroppo'  (syrup) made by sugar and concentrated fruit....but the classic grattachecca is the one we buy at the street vendors possibly going to the beach...and with three classic flavosr: lemon, orange or strawberry......

    Deal?....:p

  • quietone said on Apr 01, 2008....
ginger ~ yes it sure is a deal... as long as we pick it up from the venodor on our way to the beach in Italy!  deal?  :)
