I live in the Philippines. I love my country really. But I hate how difficult life here is. Here are some things I hate about home country:

• Last night, we loaded gas, and I still can't believe until now that it costs P44.++ per liter already! That is around US$ 0.85/liter! On the news today, it says that the peso is at its strongest in the last three months. So why does gas price continue to rise? Ok, I'll wait until after a few more days.

• The traffic is getting terrible. For three consecutive days now, I'm late for work. I even adjusted my alarm clock, to no avail. I find it ironic that despite the increasing price of gas, more and more people are buying cars. What's up with that? I think the government should have the roads widened instead of implementing a number-coding scheme. Shouldn't an avenue be wide anyway?

• We have a relatively high standard of education but why are there too many underemployed/unemployed college graduates? It's so difficult to find a decent job here. That's the main reason why many Filipinos try their luck elsewhere.

• Owning a house or a car is next to impossibility.

• Government agencies' procedures are so chaotic. I was denied a passport because of an erasure on my birth certificate. I was told by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to secure an annotated copy of it from the National Statistics Office (NSO). NSO then told me to file for RA 9048, at the Local Civil Registrar (LCR) where my birth certificate was filed. The LCR then instructed me to submit some documents, including my dad's birth certificate printed on security paper from NSO. Unfortunately, NSO doesn't have my dad's birth record so I was doomed. Dead end. I really hate having to suffer because of other people's mistakes.

• I can go on and on, but I need to do some work. I just hope some other country would adopt us. There's just too much dirty politics here.

I REALLY sympathise with you, as I have worked there for about 10 years, and still go to Manila off and on for business reasons. All you have said is true, and the situation's getting from worse to worst ! At first I thought the underlying reasons are corrupt politicians and the filipino psyche i.e. "bahala na". While I now find this to be true, i think the reason for things never to get better is the increasing population of your country. Look at countries which have the same problems, or are moving towards the poverty mess that Philippines is in... Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, India, even sad to say, Malaysia! Besides the brutally corrupt politicians that each of these countries have, the underlying reason for these countries to be "sick" is their bludgeoning population, hammering away at the scarce resources.. So those in power just grab and RUN ! See? Sobra na tama na!
• Susmaryosep said on Aug 09, 2006....
Unfortunately, even if you revolt and hang the corrupt politicians all of them, like the French did with their kings, you still have guys who take over, behaving in exactly the same way, grab grab and run! I thought Ate Gloria was good, then came,"i will not run for reelection", then "Hello Garcia". Now ChaCha.... Grabe!
• durianshortcake said on Aug 09, 2006....
I still think that it is the government's responsibility to educate the people about the natural resources. If people were properly taught to give back what they took from nature, then scarcity will not be a problem. Honestly though, I don't think that the growing population is to be blamed for the country's poverty. Besides, behind those illegal loggers, dynamite fishers, and the likes, could be some big men in the government.
• Susmaryosep said on Aug 09, 2006....
You said it.... corrupt politicians. Don't you see? And unscrupulous guys who just grab grab grab and run!! See the big picture, pare! Responsible Govt.? That's an Oxymoron!
• durianshortcake said on Aug 09, 2006....
Haha! Let's not generalize. Responsible Philippine Government--now that is an oxymoron. Btw, it's mare. *wink*
• Susmaryosep said on Aug 09, 2006....
Mare, I like that even more.... YOu know, Durian(wish you have a better name than that, hahah), I had a software engineer from the USA, when he first arrived in Manila, he told me he could fall in love every 5 minutes, so great looking and warm, are you mare's :-). I couldn't agree with him more, and you can read my first poem ever written by me, in 40 minutes, after falling head over heels for a 'mare' in manila... Except for Singapore, Norway, Switzerland and a handful of other countries, I think the oxymoron applies! Cheers, and Ingat!
• durianshortcake said on Aug 09, 2006....
Ok, I'll think of a better name only if you get a better one for yourself, too. Haha. Just kidding! Anyway, I have yet to read that poem of yours. I'll do tomorrow. Bye for now! As for the oxymoron, I think it applies to the Third World, as the name suggests. Poor us. Hope to catch you tomorrow!
• Susmaryosep said on Aug 09, 2006....
I love my name! Better than "jejomar"? hohohohohohho I may be offline for two days, and will catch up with you mr favourite 'mare' :-))

durian, people like us living in tercer mundo should keep the faith... this is the only country we've got. but i fully agree with you that things are disappointing. to a large extent, our problems are brought about by corruption and inefficiency which is sadly almost endemic in our society. of course there's also overpopulation... while we ranked second to japan in progress in the 1960s, we are now the second poorest country in the region, next to bangladesh. i'm glad to note that you love the Philippines. I love this country, too. I share your disappointments, but I hope you will also share my optimism and faith that things can still improve...
• durianshortcake said on Aug 09, 2006....
quidnunc, yeah it's really disappointing. But I don't despair. Actually, it is thru disappointments that I am able to appreciate the blessings more. Is that weird?
• durianshortcake said on Aug 09, 2006....
Pareng Susmaryosep, "Jejomar" is taboo! Haha! Why not "JMJ"? Going back to topic... I still love the Philippines. I wish I could do something big for it someday.
• FriendsForever said on Aug 10, 2006....
durian, susmaryosep... i am with you... the traffic everyday is so frustrating. do you know that i am only 19 kilometers away from my office and i have to allot 2 1/2 hours for travel? the ltfrb is trying to banish fx's but they are more convenient to ride than jeepneys. i only take fx to work coz i want to sleep rather than drive the unending traffic. "jejomar" hates bayani, don't he know his name is like "bakulaw, aswang"? lucky me, i don't work in makati but my husband does. corruption? isn't it synanymous with PGMA, PGMA, ... and PGMA? P*****ta, panay bola ginawa nya sa SONA.
• durianshortcake said on Aug 10, 2006....
FriendsForever, ang puso mo! (to our English-only readers, it's a Filipino expression that means "calm down", but the literal translation is "your heart"; long story hee hee) Actually, I think the jeepneys and other custom-made vehicles are the ones that need abolishing. But I'm pretty sure that it would never EVER happen in this lifetime. I work in Makati, btw.
• quidnunc said on Aug 10, 2006....
durian: no, it's not weird because it is by seeing the forlorn situation around you would you be able to appreciate the blessings you have... i am glad that it is still your wish to do something big for our one and only country someday... friendsforever: corruption pervades all levels in our government. i feel your disappointment, too. as citizens, we must remain vigilant and help minimize, if not eliminate, corruption... i hope your blood pressure is down now...
• durianshortcake said on Aug 10, 2006....
quidnunc, yeah, I still wish to do something for home country. And I hope our government will wish to do the same. After all, they are the ones who can make it happen. If South Korea was able to overcome poverty, why can't we?
• quidnunc said on Aug 10, 2006....
all our government needs, durian, is political will...
• FriendsForever said on Aug 10, 2006....
quidnoc, durian: the government main peoples' political will is pure corruption. going back to the jeepneys - i really hate riding the thing - most drivers has no right ethics, smoking while driving, passengers smoking too, when you reach your destination you already have tb or lung cancer. why can't len bautista of lto see all those. wish she'll stop her pa-cutie language on the tv and work better. gush, i hate the woman. i should not participate in your post durian, when government people read this you might get banned. :D so long, i might just spill something more aggravating, i love this country but i hate some government people especially that little monster in malacaƱang, grrr....
• durianshortcake said on Aug 10, 2006....
quidnunc, yeah, political will. But as to when and how it will start, nobody can tell. FF, I know how you feel about the jeepneys. I don't like riding in them either. About the one in the Palace, we share the same sentiments, too. But then, she's not worthy of my beauty. Hahah!
• FriendsForever said on Aug 10, 2006....
you're right!!! will not comment anymore 'tho there are so many things i'd like to. pag may alam ka kasi ang hirap na hindi magalit. hehehehe
• durianshortcake said on Aug 10, 2006....
FF, omg! Now, that is a revelation! *eyes wide open*
• quidnunc said on Aug 10, 2006....
my proposition stands: our country needs political will on the part of the government, and political maturity on the part of the citizenry. all of us must be pro-active members of society. while it's okay to rant and complain, we need to do more than that... for example, when you see a driver smoking, what do you do? do you report the matter to the authorities? when you see an officer not apprehending those who are violating certain rules such as smoking, do you report this misfeasance? there are things we can do.
• durianshortcake said on Aug 10, 2006....
quidnunc, believe it or not, I used to do that -- reporting to "authorities". I even remind violators that they're violating rules. But I belong to the minority, I guess. Government should be the one to take the first step. Reporting violations is useless if you don't see any action from the people who should be implementing the rules.
• Susmaryosep said on Aug 11, 2006....
Sorry, Durian, Quid, friends, I lost touch for two days. Just came back from outstation. Yes, I love the philippines, and I loved one more than life itself(read the poem in my post). unfortunately, life is not meant to be that way.. . I also can't see the philippines improving, and if it's any consolation, Malaysian politicians are now matching the solons in trickery and mischief... Unless the poor countries have a population that is sustainable with whatever resources within the country, you will always find the rich robbing the poor.. China is trying its darn best NOT to allow its population to explode. Look at the world, and look at those countries that have "overpopulation" Sad diba??? Ya I hate the name jejomar too. Susnaruisep is better hahahahahahahah
• durianshortcake said on Aug 11, 2006....
Susmaryosep, welcome back! It's pathetic, the rich robbing the poor. How heartless of them. Sigh. Btw, read the poem, I have a comment there. Catch you around!
• Susmaryosep said on Aug 11, 2006....
Ya, I saw the comment,, thanks a lot. Wrote that in 40 mins. I have seven more, but feel shy to post them, as they show the heart being torn apart.... Arai!!!!!
• quidnunc said on Aug 11, 2006....
keep the faith durian... if we will give up on our country, who else will carve its destiny, the corrupt politicians? government and politics are both important to be left in the hands of politicians... is it not that there is a saying: kung hindi tayo, sino? kung hindi ngayon, kelan? let's not give up. if the government obstinately refuses to take the first step, then let's.
• Susmaryosep said on Aug 11, 2006....
quid, I like your spirit, hope the rest of you do too! You have to get rid of the scum, and the move forward... "Hello Garcia" :-(
• durianshortcake said on Aug 13, 2006....
quidnunc, if you are qualified to run for an office in the government, would you? I will vote for you. :D
• Susmaryosep said on Aug 14, 2006....
I'll then bring in New Foreign investments...... lots and lots
• durianshortcake said on Aug 14, 2006....
Can we make this a signed agreement?=D
• Susmaryosep said on Aug 14, 2006....
Yes, provided I can get Noli Castro's job, hahahahahah. Or the philippine representative in Taipeh, I heard that's a 'goldmine' :-))))
