I am appalled!  I am flabbergasted! I am agog!

To say that I am shocked would be a bit of an understatement.  The Indoor Tanning Association, the group that represents tanning salons, tanning beds and booths is claiming that Tanning does NOT cause melanoma!

In fact, if you go to www.sunlightscam.com you can read their claims.  They basically are saying that dermatologists and sunscreen companies are in bed with eachother (but not a tanning bed) and scheming to make the world afraid of the sun/tanning/indoor tanning.  And that because we are not tanning, we are not getting the necessary amount of Vitamin D that our bodies need to be healthy.

I am aghast!  I have seen what the sun can do - my grandfather was a sunworshipper for many many years and wound up with almost half his nose removed due to melanoma!  It was not a pretty picture for such a handsome man.

And nowadays, the sun is much stronger than it was 25 years ago due to damage to the ozone layer.  But this is not mentioned on their website.

Okay, so can we sue the indoor tanning association when the rates of melanoma sky rocket to unprecedented heights?

How can ANY organization be so irresponsible!

If you want to get a deep dark tan - hey, be my guest - but just don't think that you are not doing damage to your skin on a cellular level.

This was a big issue in Australia a while ago,but people have short memories and a high level of vanity it seems. You are correct and there is a price to pay.

Solarium crackdown looming after skin cancer death

New solarium laws: Clare Oliver, who died yesterday

New solarium laws: Clare Oliver, who died yesterday (The 7.30 Report)

The solarium industry is supporting moves to tighten regulations after the death of Melbourne woman Clare Oliver from skin cancer yesterday.

The 26-year-old anti-solarium campaigner, who lost her four-year battle with cancer, had captured the attention of Australia with appearances in newspapers and on ABC TV's 7.30 Report.

The Victorian Government is planning to crack down on the solarium industry, with new laws including a ban on under-16s using sunbeds to be introduced by the end of the year, and there are calls for the New South Wales Government to follow suit.

The solarium industry says it will be hurt by tougher regulations, but supports a crackdown.

The Australasian Solarium Association's Patrick Holly says salons try to abide by current standards and are prepared to meet tougher regulations.

"There not only should be, there will be, more regulation of the industry on a state level," he said.

"A variety of states sit in working groups, especially on this topic of legislation for solariums, and we agree with it."

The Cancer Council wants it to be illegal for anyone aged under 18 to use a solarium.

The Council's Craig Sinclair says the level of UV rays the beds are allowed to emit should be lowered.

"At the moment there is no legislation in place in this state which controls solarium operations, so in many respects solarium operators are free to do whatever they like," he said.

New South Wales Opposition Health Spokeswoman Jillian Skinner is calling on the Government to immediately introduce tighter regulation of the solarium industry.

"The Cancer Council is clearly saying that there is a demonstrated lack of capacity for effective self-regulation and I think now with this tragic death, it's time for the Government to take action," she said.

Prime Minister John Howard described Ms Oliver's death as an "Australian tragedy" and called for tougher restrictions for the solarium industry.

FG, i cannot imagine how any trade association, no matter how biased, could possibly make such a statement--it's outrageous!

Rupert, Ed - I was chatting with a friend and said it was like the Tobacco Trade saying cigarettes don't cause lung diseases, or the Medical Associations saying that Obesity is not a precurser for many diseases as well.  Totally irresponsible.
