I would like to watch you sleeping,
which may not happen.
I would like to watch you,
sleeping. I would like to sleep
with you, to enter
your sleep as its smooth dark wave
slides over my head

and walk with you through that lucent
wavering forest of bluegreen leaves
with its watery sun & three moons
towards the cave where you must descend,
towards your worst fear

I would like to give you the silver
branch, the small white flower, the one
word that will protect you
from the grief at the center
of your dream, from the grief
at the center. I would like to follow
you up the long stairway
again & become
the boat that would row you back
carefully, a flame
in two cupped hands
to where your body lies
beside me, and as you enter
it as easily as breathing in

I would like to be the air
that inhabits you for a moment
only. I would like to be that unnoticed
& that necessary.

powerful poem, ginger friend. i'd like to read it again when i lull myself to sleep.... :-)

    ((whispering back sweet nothings...))

  • gingersoul said on Mar 29, 2008....

Moon.......its not of you have nothing to say......i take it as an appreciation of this beautiful poem.....:-)

    Are you familiar with Atwood?

Doesn't she describe perfectly what is difficult to describe?

  • lfbno7 said on Mar 29, 2008....
I thought it might be your poem until I came to the word lucent. No, my ginger soul wouldn't say lucent. I don't even know what it means. What do you dream about?
  • gingersoul said on Mar 29, 2008....

Lenny.....lol.....oh, you are right ... i would say lucent only in a desperate attempt to be noticed......

She doesn't  need that......she is over it...

    What do i dream about?

I think that right now i am dreaming of seeing this poem turned in reality...

And you? What you dream about, my friend?

  • lfbno7 said on Mar 30, 2008....
Sometimes I dream that I have to pee and I have to go find a bathroom somewhere, and then I wake up and go pee.
  • gingersoul said on Mar 30, 2008....
This is a very good dream indeed..now go to pee and go to bed...lol...

ginger, this is perfection in words. It works on so many different levels. Thank you for posting it.
  • moonriver said on Mar 30, 2008....
ginger -- Can't say I'm familiar with Atwood's poetry. But you've always been 5 steps ahead of me in poetry appreciation, my friend. You introduced me to this addiction, remember? *wink*

Yes, it's a perfect piece about sweet sleep, as well as a gentle expression of love. That's why I had nothing to say in response but sweet nothings. And sweet snores of sound sleeping, maybe...

that is beautiful! Sorry to miss you over at Moons post...hope all is well with you, I miss you, ya know!! Mamie

    Just beautiful...

I may be a bit weird, but I've always enjoyed watching people sleep.  Firstly, it's much easier to sketch them.  Second, those precious moments of tranquility and blissful rest reveals the person of their true nature.

    Good pick there, ginger...  ;)

Now only if I can get some(sleep, that is)...

    what a beautiful beautiful poem!
  • gingersoul said on Mar 30, 2008....

Alyss...you said it well...it works indeed on many different levels...ist like peeling an onion...a layer reveals another rone....that's why i like it.

Moon...oh, i remember very well....you arid editor....lol...and look how many beautiful poems you have written yourself...

So now write it down: M-a-r-g-a-r-e-t  A-t-w-o-o-d. Got it?...:-)

Mamie....its ok...it seems you are in a constant hurry these days....love you too!...:-)

Grap......i too like watching people sleeping....a lot....it seems the only moment in which looking doesn't require having to be looked back...it gives freedom....i dont know if it makes any sense...but its like when you blindfold someone.....you see but you are not seen......

Secret.... the sleeping ones are at their most vulnerable. While you look at your loved ones while they sleep you feel this strong almsot atavic sense of protecting them against the world.

I spent quite a time watching my ex sleeping...he used to fall alspeep fast and deep.....so i was the one remaining awake longer ....many times watching him sleeping.

Ginger, I love Margaret Atwood. I've read a number of her things, The Handmaid's Tale being my favorite.
  • gingersoul said on Aug 13, 2009....

    For you, Jadey....;-)
  • JadeLondon said on Aug 13, 2009....
Ah, Ginger! My Internet connection (my BlackBerry, which also functions as a modem) is too slow. So, I cannot enjoy what you have posted. Is it a video or song?

Have you heard the song 'Sleep'? It's the voice of Dido with Enigma. I'll see if I can find a link to it.

Also, just so you know, I did read your comment on my blog. I'm sorry I haven't responded, but have every intention of doing so. :)

By the way, do you check old posts everyday? I didn't expect a response so soon. I ask because I only receive e-mails for comments from blogs I've responded to--but never my own.

  • gingersoul said on Aug 13, 2009....

    Jadey.......oh, yes... i know it....its a great song.....love it...:-)

About the old posts.......i go to the My Conversation tab.......each new comment made to my posts (old or new) or any comment made in any other posts i commented to will pop up.....

The video is about one of Atwood's poems titled "A picture of me"...
  • JadeLondon said on Aug 13, 2009....
My Conversations...Duh! I always forget about that damn tab. Even Destiny mentioned that to me the other day. And your mentioning it serves to remind me. Well, thanks anyway. Apparently, I'm losing it.

I'll try searching for the video on Vuclip, a mobile video site that will let me save the video to my media card, then play it. Thanks!

  • gingersoul said on Aug 13, 2009....
LOL....no, you are not losing it......its just that you have been away from SC a tad too long.......but its like going on a bicycle...once you know how, you can take it on at any time........:-)

Hope you can find the video.....at the end you can see Atwood's picture too.....
  • JadeLondon said on Aug 13, 2009....
You are simply too kind. :)

Yes, I hope I can find it, too. Atwood is one of my favorites.
