Ok, so I'm not a world-class chef. I don't even like cooking. But I'm decent at the basics. I can handle easy stuff.

Unless it's Rice Krispies Treats. I love those, but every time I set foot into the kitchen to make them, something goes horribly wrong.

And it doesn't even have to be my kitchen! They're doomed in other people's kitchens when I make them, too.

It's not always my fault. I really don't understand why it happens. The kitchen gods hate me or something -- they must laugh their asses off watching me bungle these stupid things over and over again.

Like the time I was using wax paper to press them down more evenly into the pan, and then I had to dash away mid-press to keep little one from bringing an entire bookshelf down on herself at my grandparents' house -- when I was able to return to the kitchen, the RKTs had cooled so much that the wax paper was stuck. I spent a half hour peeling tiny little curls of it off before I got disgusted and tossed the batch.

Or the time I was heavily pregnant with linebacker baby and very tired, and stopped adding cereal a few cups too soon, so that the RKTs tasted fine but had this gooey nasty slimy marshmallow layer on the bottom. I ate two and then gave up. They just felt too gross.

Or tonight, when everything went just fine until I snuck a bite while they were still warm -- and discovered that the Rice Krispies, which we'd bought only a week or so ago, had already gone super-stale! Blechhhh...if you've never eaten a RKT made with stale cereal, don't. Take it from me -- it's not worth the rather singular experience.

I give up! :-D

infernal- I have an idea. Just to show yourself you can do it.

Plan it next time. Buy all new ingredients. And where on one could disturb you unless it was a killer asteroid. When you finish this perfect, delectable dish, the future times will go much better.

I'm not the greatest cook in the world, but so far I haven't messed up Rice Krispie treats yet. But my wife can actually burn water, so this isn't that bad.

Maybe it'd be better to just buy the ones already made in the package? But they don't taste as good, I found.

Next time Snap, Krackle and Pop will be looking out for you. They'll turn out awesome! I'll keep my fingers crossed.

des: I'm glad I'm not the only one.

beyond: When I find a place where nobody can disturb me, I'll let you know. :-D You're probably right though. Once I finally make them right, the cycle of extreme screwiness will be broken.

Mr. Box: Snap, Krackle, and Pop will be looking out for me? Yeah, probably with weapons in hand, yelling, "How the hell do you keep messing these up?" :-D I don't like the pre-packaged kind very much -- even little one won't eat those, and I thought she'd eat anything with sugar in it.

Your wife can burn water? Now that, I've never done. Yet. If it ever becomes part of making RKTs, though..

I love Rice Krispie treats! And I can actually make those, even if they are sort of considered baking. But knowing me, I'd probably roll them in cat fur first, so you might not want to eat them :-P

    {wonders what would happen if you ate a RKT in E_T's green car}

i'm not that good in the kitchen myself, but i'm trying to figure out why you keep having problems making 'em and failing utterly, infernal. that's just weird!

hm...maybe you should get mr. infernal to make 'em some time and you just watch from another room?

Today is T day at work....
If you know how to multi task....
I am drowning my sorrows in a bowl full of kid's cereal - Cookie Crisp, dinner of champions. I could have easily made a case for eating cookies for dinner, but at least this way I can pretend to have eaten real food.

What I'd like to know is...
in the flesh...
Happy Thanksgiving....
