Ok, so I'm not a world-class chef. I don't even like cooking. But I'm decent at the basics. I can handle easy stuff.
Unless it's Rice Krispies Treats. I love those, but every time I set foot into the kitchen to make them, something goes horribly wrong.
And it doesn't even have to be my kitchen! They're doomed in other people's kitchens when I make them, too.
It's not always my fault. I really don't understand why it happens. The kitchen gods hate me or something -- they must laugh their asses off watching me bungle these stupid things over and over again.
Like the time I was using wax paper to press them down more evenly into the pan, and then I had to dash away mid-press to keep little one from bringing an entire bookshelf down on herself at my grandparents' house -- when I was able to return to the kitchen, the RKTs had cooled so much that the wax paper was stuck. I spent a half hour peeling tiny little curls of it off before I got disgusted and tossed the batch.
Or the time I was heavily pregnant with linebacker baby and very tired, and stopped adding cereal a few cups too soon, so that the RKTs tasted fine but had this gooey nasty slimy marshmallow layer on the bottom. I ate two and then gave up. They just felt too gross.
Or tonight, when everything went just fine until I snuck a bite while they were still warm -- and discovered that the Rice Krispies, which we'd bought only a week or so ago, had already gone super-stale! Blechhhh...if you've never eaten a RKT made with stale cereal, don't. Take it from me -- it's not worth the rather singular experience.
I give up! :-D
