so i'm going to be in training until next week friday-ish, but here's a brief update.

1. working with a mainframe-based database again (something i did in my first-ever job) has reminded me that my memory sometimes isn't quite as bad as i always thought--i remembered some key things that i would not have expected to remember (e.g., hitting the right CTL key in place of the enter key).

2. my co-workers are nifty people that i'm gonna enjoy getting to know better. i do wish however that there was a bar nearby so i could do a quick happy hour thing w/ some of 'em, to get to know people better--there's a lot of people in my department so having some personal details about 'em would make getting to know 'em easier.

3. there's a lot of company-specific jargon that i'm shocking myself by picking up relatively quickly. i'm hoping that this means the training process for myself and l (coworker who started the same day as me) will be shorter as a consequence--i'm frustrated by having theoretical knowledge about the stuff i've been learning but no likelihood of trying to apply it for another week or so!

4. apparently, my body still thinks that i'm still commuting into the city: i keep waking up at around 5 or so. i don't need to be awake until around 6:45 or so--this is most annoying! it doesn't seem to matter what time i go to sleep. gr...

5. i thought it took me 20 mins to do that drive. apparently it's more like 25. gonna have to drive faster. :D

I am so glad to hear you are enjoying your new job ed.  That is over half the battle right there.  In time you will come to know your coworkers as well.  Have a great weekend off!  :)

Drive safely Ed! Especially with not enough sleep, you gotta be careful.. And you're still waking up too early huh? That must be annoying.. it cant be for long though.. Someone said two weeks the other day, right? Give it time..

sounds excellent Ed! I am really happy for you and I am most excited that you have found some new "partners in crime" as it makes working so much more fun! I am sure they are enjoying you too...there MUST be a bar somewhere? keep looking for that one!!

Wow, training lasts forever there! :-p I can see how you'd want that to move along a little more.

I'm so glad this job is looking pretty good from the inside. :) I hope you quit waking up at such an ungodly hour soon though!

LOL.  Just leave a little earlier, ya goof!

    Drive faster...  [shakes head]

Man 5 o'clock is way too early for me to get up.  Either that, or it's waay too late for me to go to bed...  Sleep has always been an issue for me(never enough).  Do you see your work quality suffering when you don't get enough sleep?  Just curious...

Once you learn the jargon it's all downhill.  Sounds like you've landed a job that is more appropriate to your comfort zone and skill sets.  Perhaps the change is also good in that it keeps work interesting.

Ed...i totally agree about the necessity of having a close happy hour place....its nice having a glimpse of what your co-workers are outside theiroffice persona.....

I am back tonight just from an (extended) one....and it has been fun....occasions like this one make you look at your colleagues differently and many times ease some job related inter-connections...

Did i tell you congrats for your job already??.....:-D

About drive faster....if i drive faster than now one of these mornings i will pass the office without having the time to stop and make the turn.....i swear....lol...

quietone: thank you! i must confess, it gives me great pleasure to be able to say it. :> i certainly plan to enjoy the weekend--although i've just realized i still have work to do on that damned database...again!

diabolic: i always drive safely, but thanks! and yeah, it's kinda annoying but hey, i'll adjust whenever i finally manage to do so and it'll be OK. it's just periodically frustrating, you know?

mamie: o, i definitely plan to look. i think i've discovered one that might fit the bill and if i'm right it's only one mile away. :>

infernal: yes, it certainly does take a while to get trained here! honestly, i think i'm at the point where i'd be OK with skipping to the end already, to be honest. ah, well. :> and as i said to diabolic, i guess my body will adjust eventually. i'm gonna try not thinking about it to see if not focusing on it helps. :>

grape: i only really notice a drop off in my work if my sleep dep is especially bad, to be honest. having said that, perceptions are altered too when you're tired so it's possible it's suffering and i'm just insufficiently awake to notice. and dude, driving faster is always an option. :p

u-i: as usual, you've cut to the heart of the matter, in my estimation. :> the jargon's coming along as well as could be expected. i'm getting to stretch some skillsets i haven't had much occasion to recently so that's always rewarding. :>

little sis: well, i guess we'll see--right now, i'm using the early part of my day for that, though, so if i'm here, that usually will mean i'm not sleeping properly, it seems.

GS: hey, been a while since we've seen one another, hasn't it? i think you did already but thanks again. :> and i think that i might have to create a church around driving fast--i figure that if u-i can create one to caffeine, chocolate and coffee, why not? :D yeah, socializing w/ colleagues is always a good thing, IMHO. it's always good to know what people are like outside of work, i think--easier to keep in touch should circumstances change. :>
