short version: adobe, creators of the PDF and photoshop, are making a basic version of their popular photoshop photo-editing application available online for free. long version here.

commentary: while i will confess i’m not crazy about adobe due to their knuckling under to what i consider wholly insane demands re: protecting intellectual property, i think that this is a great idea by adobe—people do make a lot of use of it. of course, they tend to use it to modify wacky pictures into truly bizarre things, and i gotta say, i think we’ll see a positive explosion of such things now. if you’re interested, the free version can be found here.

while i'm not myself a shutterbug, i know a number of soulcasters are so i figured i oughta share. :>

p.s.: darn it, where's quoll when you need him?! :D[/other online haunt joke]

Ohh thats nice.. People should explore Photoshop.. Its just so cool.. I have Adobe Photoshop 7.0 and its great. The last productive thing I did with it was making a birthday gift for my Bf.. I made him a 12 page calender using thick photo paper and put our pictures on each page. Since I wont be seeing him for a year, I figured this way I could sit pretty on his table the whole time! :-)

I <3 Photoshop (running 7.0 here) and I think it's nifty that they made a free version. :)

Ed, you have the most useful information.  Thank you for posting this!  I just bought a new digital camera (the Canon EOS Rebel XTi).  I'm so excited about it too.  I have a fully automatic one that pretty much sucks (sorry but it does).  I also have a 35mm (slr) but who wants to mess with film with digital being what it is today?  My SIL has an older model of the digital I now have and we've been sharing it for important events for a couple of years.  I know she is excited to now be able to share mine.  Besides, my new one takes very size-accurate photos.  Did you see the pic I took for you of the size of the pill in relation to the vase?

    Hmm. Interesting.

I use Paint.NET (which I love!) but I might check out free Photoshop anyway and compare.

Oh. I see that it's web based. Interesting. I think that Adobe might be a bit late to the party.

diabolic: that's a really thoughtful present! i'm awfully curious--why is it you won't be seeing him for a year?

infernal: see, i've never worked with photoshop so i don't have an opinion on the matter. but i'm looking forward to changing that. :D

grape: triple creme st. andre! :D

fearing: i knew that some folks would find this interesting. :> i don't however think i know to what picture you're referring--i think i'm 3 days behind on my users still--link?

TS: adobe's quite late to the party undoubtedly, but the power of the brand is truly mighty indeed. that's one of the problems i think most well-established brands keep running into: they're so paranoid about protecting their brand that they lose sight of the fact that a brand is useless unless you, well, use it.

ed, I'm a bit surprised you don't have experience with Photoshop. No reason that you should, I guess...and I hope you find it as nifty as I do. I like ImageReady, too, not that I have cause to animate things other than making glitter effects these days.

i'm not much of one for picture-taking, so i don't know much about image-editing software apps.

ugh...glitter effects make me roll my eyes, i'll confess.

I think if they're tastefully done (and very sparsely included), glitter effects can enhance a photo signature (which is most of what I make, not that I've had time to do even that much lately). If it's overdone, yeah, it gets tacky.

c'mon infernal...how many people use those effecs sparingly though?! :>

Hey Ed.. I cant see him because he's abroad studying for his master's.. Not a very dramatic reason I'm afraid.. but the university rules dont allow him to leave during any of the breaks like easter or christmas and I have to wait for the academic year to end to see him. But then again if his stay gets extended because of work or looking for work then I have wait more.
  • silverwhisper said on Mar 30, 2008....
    ah...OK, that makes sense. :>

  • diabolicdame said on Mar 30, 2008....
Does it? It never made sense to me and I've only made peace with it because I got tired of complaining to him and to god! *sigh*
  • silverwhisper said on Mar 30, 2008....
yes, it does. you want him to be free to pursue things that are investments in his future, like furthering his education. that's completely understandable, if you ask me.

  • the_infernal_optimist said on Mar 30, 2008....
Well, I was going to suggest that most people who overuse glitzy effects haven't been doing graphics very long, and/or have no clue as to the principles of design/what makes a compelling but not gaudy logo or whatever...but I think you'd just find something to say to that, too, so never mind. ;-)
