(It's been quite a while since I finished and posted one of these! I've only got a few left now.)
On December 12th, we went to Rudesheim. First, we hit the Weihnachtsmarkt.
Rudesheim is an architecturally interesting but very dark city.
Several entryways had mosaic tiles or elaborate carvings.
We got to Rudesheim so late in the day that we didn't spend nearly as much time there as we did some other places (nor was there as much to see, to be honest). But then the in-laws drove up to the ferry, which we took across the Rhine, and started down a narrow, two-lane road very close to the river. They both seemed to know something we didn't -- there was an almost palpable air of excitement in the van.
It didn't take long to see what they were so excited about. I almost did a double-take with the first one I saw.
Castles! Castles on the river! I whipped my camera out and did my best to take pictures of some of them, but it was near dusk (so about 4pm :-p) and overcast, and there wasn't always anywhere to stop to get a good shot.
And check out this castle IN the river. No, I don't know why. But coooooool. :-D
I did get a neat one of a train going past:
I like this shot, too -- it gives a good feel of what the winter was like there, the starkness a sharp contrast to the mild "winters" where I live.
Up next: The castle in Heidelberg and the funicular railway!
