The city of Auckland is in the northern part of New Zealand. It is situated on a strip joining the northwestern North Island and the North Auckland Peninsula. Bordering on the Manukau Harbour and the Waitemata Harbour near the Pacific Ocean, the city has several extinct volcanoes, a seaport, a naval base, a fishing area, and some commercial centers. It has been told, too, that many islanders from the Pacific moved to Auckland in 1945 when the World War II ended. The urban areas around Auckland have many Maori inhabitants, whose ancestors are Polynesian people from the Southeast Asia. They inhabited the island before the arrival of the white Europeans. Auckland was said to be the capital of colonial New Zealand in 1840 but twenty-five years after, the capital was transferred to Wellington, until the present.
