When I was working, there were many times I was treated to what people did to their home due to an interest they had. Let me give you some examples.

I walked into a home through the front door where there was a large family room and the kitchen in one area. The walls and other places were covered or filled with windmills. There were pictures, but most were actual models of windmills she had collected over the years.

Another had frogs everywhere (not live ones when I mention animals). Frogs were on the dining room table, walls, and kitchens counters were covered. I'll bet they were in bathrooms too.

One woman had turtles like the frog woman, and in this case had live ones in her backyard - I mean lots of them.

One man had old and collectible thermometers on walls inside and outside the house.

Perhaps the most interesting to me was a guy that had electric trains throughout.

Another interesting one was a woman with Christmas items that covered every room - twelve months a year. She had dozens of nutcrackers on the floor lining the walls.

I ran into a number that did this with knick-knacks of all flavors, sizes, and kinds.

We do a little of this, or my wife does. A couple of you could probably guess its Golden Retrievers. She has calendars, a front door entry mat, numerous little porcelain ones, and the fridge must have a dozen. There is a blanket covering the sofa in the library with a sleeping golden imprinted on it. She used to have golden purses, but can't find them anymore.

So I'm wondering if your house is dedicated to an interest of yours. Or what do you have that might stand out if I walked in?

If it were up to my hubby, it would be all "deer."  (and there is quite alot of that around)  If it were up to me, it would be "butterflies."  (alot of that, too.)

But if I could decorate in any way I wanted---I want a house that is all in the colors of fall----oranges, browns, yellows, reds...... I can see it now.  A house that is inisde like "outside."

One of my great enjoyments is when I discover a friend 'collects' something. It gives me a theme when I m looking for a gift for them. One friend collects giraffes another hipoppotumuses (hipoppotomi?). I tend to find them in the strangest places from little shops to garage sales and flea markets. I collect friends.

BeyBey.....i guess i can say my house offers many glimpses of my great passion for the ocean...

I have two drawings on wood of whales on the wall.. (if you go on Flick you can see them) ....l.have fish shaped wood and metal hooks in my bathrooms.....i have a big blue and white ceramic plate hung at the kitchen wall with a blue fish. I used to have a mini collection of sailings boats (now they are reduced to three)...

I have sea shells and dried sea weeds from my Italian beaches in a bowl .... i have even a windchime made by 8 metal fishes .......blue is my home predominant color...i have framed pictures of me and my daughter taken on the beach....well..you got the idea...lol..

So yes, if i would have the great pleasure to have you at my home thats what you would immediately notice...my love and longing for the ocean and sailing...

This is one of my saling boats...

this is tough beyond....because i don't actually collect anything these days besides ceramic teapots which i keep in a curio, and a few christopher radko christmas ornaments that are kept in a china cabinet....

i guess if there was a 'theme' to my place it would be family pictures-
in my foyer going upstairs there are 11x16 photos.....6 of them...in my family room i have a stand-up divider that's over 5 feet tall with pictures of the kids....a sofa table with way too many pictures......both top and bottom filled so that to add a new one i have to take away one.  the mantel on my fireplace has 6 8x10's of the kids......they are the "christmas" photos we do each year.

i also have a table by my bed with.....yeah, you guessed it, more framed photos.

my best friend's mom collect elephants.  they're everywhere in her home.  but they have to have their trunks pointing up towards the sky......otherwise she believes they are bad luck!

wombat- I have also seen the butterfly collections and they were quite impressive - good choice (don't know what your husband would say). As for the colors, which I like, because we have three of them, can't you do some painting? Its not really that expensive a step at a time.

botoni- I've seen the giraffes at those places, but not the hippos. It might be difficult to collect those here. You collect friends? Now there's a neat way to collect. And its free.

ginsoul- Ah, the sea. Although I've only seen the sea twice, there is certainly a draw. That bowl of seaweed must be a conversation piece. I can well understand your love of things of the sea. At one time a few years ago I came within an inch of going into boat modeling. To be good at this takes a real craftsman and dedication. Its still something I'm thinking about. Oh, I forgot to say that the contrast color in my home is blue.

secret- The family photo theme is loved by many. If I had to narrow down to the most popular I've seen, it would be photos. We have the family on the walls in the hall that separates the living area from the bedrooms. I've seen the elephant themes too, but bad luck with the trunks down is new to me. I wonder if other people feel that way too?

  • beyondtheveil said on Mar 26, 2008....
queen- My wife used to have a santa collection. She still has them but quit collecting them a few years ago. My favorite was santa as a woodsman.

Bill and I have a pretty decent collection of books and CD/DVDS.  We have our entire hallway lined with shelves for them and there are other bookcases filled as well as piles of "books in progress".  Other than that we have the gong which is probably more appropriate in a temple than an apartment.  Most of our artwork is nature oriented and there are piles of computers, monitors and other electronics that we trip over.

I'm not much of a house decorator myself. My tastes are so eclectic and utilitarian.

The nearest thing that would probably mark (decorate?) any place where I stayed for some length of time would be books, notebooks, sketchpads, pens and brushes all over the place. And rolls of maps. And potted plants, especially herbs. And screwdrivers. And cable-crimping tools. And cables of all kinds festooned on hooks above my computer work table.

It was Sophie who did most of the real decorating. Small angel figurines. Chimes. Picture frames.

I've never understood people who are so passionate about anything that it makes them collect. I just don't get the idea. Just yesterday I saw a documentary about Ninja Turtle collectors, These people are like going extreme with the whole theme thing, and to me it screams that they need therapy. I do not mean to hurt people's feeling so please do not get all mad at me, because I do respect the fact that some people simply like stuff so much they actually collect them. I would never discriminate or talk poorly about this hobby. It'a just not something I find useful in life. I always thought that people who collect are somewhere trying to fill up some kind of an emptiness, or run away from reality.

However, I do like some things more than some other things, and I do have a favourable color line I like to see in my home. I like all the shades of brown and cream and I think these look really good in homes. I have coffee mugs in these shapes, and my living room has these shades. I will probably spice it up with some really bright red and/or silver. I think these colors are also unisex, so they are OK for both sex in the family. I mean, I would love to have a pretty bedroom with soft, girly colors, but I just don't think it'd be fair to the macho man who sleeps on the other side of the bed. He would probably want to have a whole red room maybe with some pink in it if it was only on him, so we just gonna have to agree on something nutural. Shades of brown and cream =]. Like coffee.

We both like stuffed animals too. I like them decorative and classy, with the already mentioned colors. He likes them White, red and pink, and if they light up or talk it's even better. My son like them too, and he really doesn't care about what the color is as long as they are mascular - lion, dog or bear. When you come into my home you'll find teddy bears and dogs sitting as decorative elements of the room. They are naturally brown and cream colored, and there are not too many of them. Children might play with them, but than they must get back into their spots. I wouldn't want to have more of them, since it is not a baby room, it's a living room. If anything, I'd like to add some candles in these colors, but no more stuffed animals.

The red/pink/white, light up, talking ones are in out bedroom. Every one of them were gifts from him to me. Of course I would NEVER purchase these things on my own, and I think he gets them because he likes them. He will probably fill up the room with them, and there is nothing I can do about it. We put them out on the shelves, because to me, they are little parts of HIM, so I love them for that reason only. It makes me smile to think of me as an old lady with a room filled up with stuffed animals and pillows of these colors. I just hope he will not mix any other colors.

In my son's room we've got all the other stuffed ones. He likes them because he is 8, and because his dad gives him one every time he visits him. Thank G*d my ex has a fairly good tast in colors, so these ones are bareble, OK looking ones. There are not too many, since my son is a boy after all.

But that's about it. Hardly a hobbi, hardly a collection. If you walk into my home the most interesting thing you'll see is that I have a dog and a cat living with us in a perfect harmony - in a country where keeping cats is not a part of the culture. This country has street cats like other countries have pigeons. People just don't think much of them around here, and it is not common to see a cat living inside with a family. A lot of people feed them, but they are not kept as pets. In my little apartment Foofy and Tzitza live together in harmony, because I just love animals. I am the one who saves the little kittens on the streets, and everybody knows that about me. I'm the one who the neighbors call when the street dogs need care. If I could I would keep them all, give them a home and a lot of TLC. But I can't so I just do the best with what I have. Tzitza, the cat goes outside or comes inside whenever  he pleases, but of course he's got his shots and his well taken care of. Foofy is the jelous puppy, who follows me wherever I go. They both sleep with me in the bed, they both must lay around me if I'm on the couch in the living room, or they both must sit next to the potty when Ianswer nature's callings. If I'm outside with the neighbors they are around me, playing together, which amaze people who see them. We are known in the neighborhood, children love to play with Foofy, people like to let Tzitza into their homes and feed him as if he was their pet. I think they know he is clean and healthy. They know he is a "good" cat. I don't know.

Have you ever seen the Tobe Hooper film "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre"?

    That's my interior decorating style.
Understated and rustic yet alarmingly horrific!
  • quietone said on Mar 26, 2008....
I change my collections often.. part of who I am... change.  But I would say that most of my "collecting" goes to the whimsical side.. like gnomes, trolls, frogs.  I do tea pots in my kitchen.  so its a conglomoration of sorts.
  • beyondtheveil said on Mar 27, 2008....
unique- I collect books too and my artwork is primarily women. But I've been at war with CD's since they came out. I don't believe I've bought a CD for myself since they came out. I still buy cassettes when I can find them.

moon- All those things you mentioned except plants are in my workshop. You might like my workshop. But if you or Sophie were to decorate my house, I might choose Sophie. No, I'd definitely choose Sophie. I once laid out a bunch of maps in the library and my wife quickly explained why they didn't belong there.

zsuzsio- I really don't know how to explain how the collection bug bites people. Some are easily usable and satisfying like books and music, some aren't like frogs and turtles. The most collected item in this country is postcards. Many are appealing like pics and chimes. Others are a hobby like model building . But it seems like most people collect something. Since you are an animal lover, if you had the room, you might collect animals - many do.

tainted- Well, its easy to care for. I've always liked the 'rustic' part.

quiet- Teapots would be an interesting collection. And as I said, my wife does the knick-knack thing quite a lot.

Hi beyond, right now, my house is still "bare", because it's unfinished, so all the things are still packed. But some of the shelves at home are occupied with shells of different sizes -- given to me as tokens and gifts.
  • beyondtheveil said on Mar 27, 2008....
lioness- Honestly, I wouldn't at all mind having a few seashells myself. Problem is, the middle of the desert isn't the best place for access to them. Maybe the internet....

  • beyondtheveil said on Mar 28, 2008....
Ed- Anything people would notice counts. Although they would notice my wife's dog thing, I think they would spend a lot more time with my books.

There's a little more cubism than most homes.

  • beyondtheveil said on Mar 29, 2008....
dying- Although I don't have cubism among the framed pictures in my home, I did grow over time to like it. Initially, I did some reading over what the cubist artists were attempting to show in their paintings and then paid attention to the paintings themselves. It gave me a healthy respect for the genius of Picasso. It also led me to admiring his other work.

Before, I had concentrated mostly on impressionism, dutch, and renaissance. Cubism opened up another world for me.

Dyingwife specializes in it (she's an artist), thus its abundance.
