One of my co-workers asked me to order a publication from him.  I diligently looked up the info on the last outdated book and went to the website.  It seemed pretty basic but straightforward.  I clicked on the publications link, found the book I wanted and tried to buy it.  I tried clicking on anything that looked remotely clickable.  I checked the "shopping cart" to see if I had inadvertantly managed to get it in there.  Nothing.

I'm not a tech head, but I am pretty adept at navigating websites.  I'd even dare to say I'm skilled to a fairly high degree at shopping online.  When I run across something like this I have to scratch my head and wonder if it's me.

I try calling the phone number on the older book.  It takes me to a phone tree where I pick the publications option.  It transfers me to "john doe" of that department.  The voicemail informs me that he doesn't work there any longer and that 3 other people have taken on his responsibilities.

At this point I think I know why Mr. Doe left the company.  They are techical idiots who make his life hell by not fixing their retarded website.  Instead of managing the department he probably spent all his time taking orders by phone.  He developed carpal tunnel and went out on disability.

I call one of his replacements who also doesn't answer, but at least still works there.  I leave a message stating that I've been to the website and it's broken.  A couple of hours later he emails back and tells me to go to the website and click "x" buttons.  I reply that I've already done that.  He emails back with another combination of buttons.  I reply that I've done that too.  Still in book purchasing limbo.

Maybe I'm a little short tempered.  I'm starting to contemplate calling one of the VPs or perhaps the President of the organization to make a complaint.  That's right, why mess around with the middle man when you can go straight to the top?

Cranky.  Just cranky today.  I hate having to suffer fools.

OMG!! The guy just emailed me back and asked me to call him.  I have already left him a message before I emailed him. LOL

Funny....your title is exactly how I long to answer my phone....I wish I could not help people more...lol....maybe I should work for that company! Good luck!

I hate dealing with things like this... oh it sends me to red in a hurry.  and in the end... they always tell me... well it has to be your computer that is messed up.. okay.. sure.

LOL  I love how you called it a retarded website.  And you are so right!  I absolutely hate retail websites that make it difficult to shop.  I'm pretty good at navigating my way around the 'net, so it's not like I need remedial web surfing help.  I won't use websites that make me feel like I have to run an obstacle course to do what I want to do.

unique- I have a serious question - why would a shopping website make it difficult or impossible to order? Its exactly like having a business, having no stock, and keeping the door locked.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Mar 25, 2008....
tizzy - well apparently they DO have at least one opening.

quietone - I take it for granted that it's my computer, but the problem remains theirs since I'm the "customer".

MissMimi - me either.  I'd rather pay a little more and not have to work so hard to give away my money.

BTV - From what I understand the entire industry of this company is technology backwards.  No small wonder that their websites follow suit.

That time of the month again already?
  • uniquely-ironic said on Mar 25, 2008....
Kilgore - are you seriously saying that because they have a poorly designed website that it must be because I have PMS?  BTW, no.
  • Kilgore_V_Trout said on Mar 25, 2008....
No, because you said "Cranky. Just cranky today." Sounds awfully familiar...
  • uniquely-ironic said on Mar 25, 2008....
Kilgore - so cranky means PMS?  What tree did you just recently climb out of?
  • Kilgore_V_Trout said on Mar 25, 2008....
My cunt-tree. And PULEEZE GOD do not let me run into this women when she IS pre-menstral, if this is typical of her other three weeks. Luv, Killy.

I think the feeling is mutual.  I don't enjoy the company of knuckle draggers

I'm still in the dark ages and have trouble using the phone to get things done....at least you know what you are doing and can muddle through the muck on computer generated life.  Kudos to you!

U-I, I can identify. . .I hope today is better than yesterday.  Let us know if you got to call the guy and get the problem sorted.

Hi, I've run into things like like also, it makes me wonder whether I need a Twilight zone passport. I start having doubts about this reality and wondering if I have fallen into somebody's virtual reality hell. Businesses should create a job title: website tester. (My husband is in charge of a website and we do this testing, but probably not enough!)
  • uniquely-ironic said on Mar 26, 2008....
wombat - why thank you!!  If nothing else I am persistant.

queenie - me too.  It sets a bad tone for the day.

polar - yes, eventually I did get the book purchased.  I'll add a short a bit to tell you how it all worked out.

Trinov - that's not a bad idea.  I know when they write software they have a department they send it to so that other people can try to "break" it.

So I waited for a response to the last email this guy sent.  I was starting to think I'd have to call an upper up to get results when he finally called back.

He had me go to the website, again.  I thought it was an exersize in futility but I'm a pretty good sport about these things.  When we got to the point of trying to order the book again he had me click on a word that was off to the side.  No color differentiation or box or button.  Just text sitting there looking like ........ text.

I was embarrassed at first.  Thinking that I should have been able to know that the word "order" in a sentence was the button.  Then it occurred to me that I might not be the only one who couldn't read minds.  I asked if they had problems with the website and he admitted they had.  He also said that they had planned to redesign the site so that the order buttons worked and it was clear how to order, but they just hadn't gotten around to it.

At this point (2-3 hours for the whole project) I had wasted way too much time and all I wanted to do was be done.  I thanked him for his help and got off the phone.  Ordered the book, sent an email to my coworker who later admitted he knew this company was a pain to deal with and took a break.

you know, i really don't get why people design sites so stupidly in the first place!
