Battycat's tags:
I went up to my parents for the day, and we went to lunch with a couple of their friends.

It was a strange day, I passed a few old haunts on my way there and back, I wish I'd taken my camera, I could have taken some lovely photos.

The friends have got a beautiful cottage, it's small, with an open fire in the living room, and an aga and an old sofa in the kitchen, rough white washed walls. Two bedrooms, and a walled garden with veiws onto the fells.
I could just move in lock stock and barrel, it was my ideal cottage.

The village is lovely as well, I remember it from when I was a child. We lived about 100 miles away from there then, but every Whitsun , from age 6 to 9, we used to go camping there, with about 5 other families. We always had rain, and spent the whole week up to our eyes in mud, but we, (the kids) had a wale of a time.

The famer whose land we camped on was a lovely man, I used to "help" take the cows in morning and night for milking, and spent most of the time on the farm, there were always calves to cuddle, and a grey and white boarder collie dog called Fly, who I loved. He must have thought I was a pain in the neck, but he was always kind, and never shattered my childish illusions about what happened to those calves, (I know now of course :-(  )

I took the dogs for a walk after lunch today, and I decided to walk to the river we camped next to, but Mums dog spoiled the plan, he's a bit naughty when it comes to birds, ie chickens and ducks, and we came face to face with a free range chicken, I only just grabbed him in time before he got it! Oh well.

I like the idea of living up there in the dales, but I couldn't afford to at the moment, plus I'm not the most outgoing sort, and you could get very lonely very quickly I think. I've got a small group of friends where I am, and I'm settled. Maybe one day.

I need to learn to live in the now, and make the most of what I've got, I'm not bad at that, but I could be better :-)

Happy, Happy Birthday, Batty!  It sounds like a lovely day.
I would move to that cottage in the dales in a New York second!

Thanks Twyla, it was a lovely day.
I'd have to throw my parents friends out before I could move in though, just a small snag :-)

Sounds wonderful and I can see why you'd want to be there.

Maybe some day when you slow down a little?

batty- Good post, I especially liked the cottage. Out here, we usually call them cabins, I've never gotten used to the cottage word. My wife is more from a cottage world. The place you describe sounds like a good place for your retirement years.

Happy Birthday!  That very last line of yours hits home for me, but I sure would love to live in a place like that.  Back to nature, back to earth, with things slowed down to a more stable emotional crawl....maybe one day.  Never mind--just Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday, Batty!!  The way you explained the English country side is just as I imagine it!  Of course we have driven through the country, but we have never stayed over on a farm.  The dog called "Fly" reminded me of "Babe" - his doggie mom was called "Fly" too :-)

It's my birthday today, and as a little "self-appreciation" task for the week, I asked 20 friends, family, colleagues and associates to pick three words that best described me. Some of the answers are inside......
