I am not personally old enough even to remember but, having served in the Army myself I can see several issues with Mr. McCain and his military service.
He claims that he held out till he could hold out no longer but, at any point he would have been able to give false information and nothing would have come to anyone else. I believe that the information he gave was truthful and that is a break against the code of all Military service members.
He touts his service like a medal upon his chest and yet, his money and connections left him with the ability to prosper while so many less connected individuals who also served and were POW’s were forgotten by Mr. McCain as he so proudly served and serves in our Governmental Bureaucracy that he also touts as “experience.” Mr. McCain as a fellow Veteran of our Armed Forces you shame those with so little who do so much more for those who are unable to help themselves and also served so proudly.
As many Veterans have in the past many have made mistakes granted like all people but, the choices he has made to tout his experiences by writing a book, using it on his senate campaigns, etc. leave a bad taste in other Vets’ mouths. He failed to truly honor his brothers in arms after returning home by moving forward and not looking back to those whom he left behind, the ones who still seem to suffer from their experiences.
Now he wants to tout his decision to stay in Iraq and make more Vets who suffer and many are coming home, drinking themselves to death, using drugs to cope and where is Senator McCain for them? He is out touting his own experiences and ignoring those who need him the most, those whom he asked to go over there and protect an unwanted democracy.
They only wanted rid of Saddam and he granted that wish but, now we have a vacuum of bombs and destruction that leaves many scarred both physically and mentally for the rest of their lives. What about the first Gulf War Vets many we served with before they went to the Gulf? How has he helped to take care of them? He has done nothing to aid the Veterans Administration to clean up its act till the news hit the newspaper. Thanks, Mr. McCain you great and experienced war veteran that you are, you should be so proud.
Personally, I would rather have someone willing to stand up and admit at the risk of ruining his political career that he has made mistakes and failed to care for his fellow Vets’ but, instead we get Mr. McCain and his storied career.
