asked The Boy.
I had to agree that technically, as a professional, card-carrying mommy, that it is indeed my job to feed him.
It's at times like this that I wish I could manage to follow a recipe.
But that doesn't matter with bread.
Breadmaking is easy, and wonderful.
All you need is flour, yeast, warm liquid, and something to feed the little yeasties. Sugar is too easy -- they also like sour cream, honey, ground seeds and nuts, yoghurt, mashed potatoes and the occasional egg.
Add warm liquid -- not hot. You want to wake up the yeast, not cause it to die horribly. Enough to make a thick, gluey liquid.
Set it in a warm place to rise. Watch for lots of bubbles, all the way through.
Heavily flour a board or countertop, and turn the glop into it. Work enough flour into it to make it form a ball. The more flour you work in the denser the bread.
Place it in a pan, or a pizza stone, or a cookie sheet or whatever to rise again.
Bake it. Temperatures can range from 350-425F.
Bake it until it's brown.
You can brush it with an egg wash to make it shiny and brown (this helps stick seeds and bran to the top, as well), spritz it with water frequently as it bakes to make a thick crust, or just let it bake.
The Boy prefers it cleverly disguised as pizza, but is happy to have a roll or even just a hunk with butter.
That's his idea of paradise . . .
