Was just browsing the web earlier and stumbled accross a link saying Experts have hit out at a study which says the health advantages of exposure to the sun outweigh the risk of skin cancer. A study in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) says the danger of dying from skin cancer has been exaggerated and the potential benefits from the sun played down.

Regardless of the controversy highlighted here, do you spend time trying to get a tan every year?

It may just be a man thing, but I really don't see the facination in having darker skin. Is it really worth the risks?

I for one don't find wrinkled sun induced burnt grey skin attractive. Neither do I find peeling and pink skin attractive. In fact, if a woman was really pale, but it was natural, I'd be far more interested in her than someone who's tried to 'black themselves up' innit!

What do you think? Girls and guys, I want to hear from you both...

Hell no homie, it's not worth the risk! I'm one of those chaps who you see with white arms, lips, a thigk t-shirt and cap on teh beach. Don't get me wrong, I love the sun, but have seen what it can do to you. I value my life too much, to worry about being vain to that degree.

    Well said.

Don't agree - probably because I'm female, but if I leave myself to stay pasty white all summer, nt only do I get ridiculed by all those lovely bronzed ppl out there, but I feel left out. No one likes feeling left out. I also think it looks good, maybe it's just one of those things society has led us to believe, but I like it. Don't like peeling though. x

LT - So, would I be correct in saying that these day's, the pressure to get a tan is largely from other women. Kinda a self-reinforcing problem if you know what I mean? I know some guys who like tans and wouldn't go out with someone really pale, but I think that's just hugely shallow, as do other friends of mine.

Yay, have to aggree with temptress I'm affraid. It's just something that is taken for granted these days, like getting an earing or tattoo. There are risks involved with all these things. Cancer is very scarry though, so I always put on protection cream. I know someone who recently died of cancer, which was horrible. It's a catch 22 for sure.
  • mrhowto said on Aug 08, 2006....
Sun cream is always good, but even with it on, you shouldn't stay in the sun more than about 2 mins at a time on a clear summer's day.
  • bandanna said on Aug 08, 2006....
Agree, but I(and im sure every other girl out there) tries to spend at least 2 hours grilling out in the summer sun. There's nothing nicer than lying in the sun on a gorgeous day. So what if I die a little younger, at least I would have enjoyed my life...and left a good looking corpse :P

I stay away from the sun because I think pale skin is pretty, and also because people who have been exposing themselves to the sun a lot tend to get a "baked chicken" look in their thirties.

^Exactly^...someone with sense at last lol ;)

It's not like I go and sit in the cancer casket(tanning booth) or anything, but I like to play outside. Golf, football, soccer, softball, picnics, barbeques, swimming.... I like to be out in the sun. So naturally, during the summer, I get a pretty nice, goledn brown tan(like the colour of the top of a fresh loaf of white bread). Last summer, I did a lot of driving, so my left arm was about three shades darker than my right. This year, I've been doing a lot of riding on my bike, so I have tan lines where my gloves end. It's kinda funny, my arm looks like a tub of neapolitan Ice Cream, with three distinct shades. I agree with the "baked chicken" comment, though I like to describe it as "leathery".

Well I'm allergic to the sun! AFter many years of not going camping etc...I decided to not listen to doctors about this. This is just like the deodorant thing, the aluminium in them is supposed to cause cancer. The question is...are you going to stop living because some doctor told me it MIGHT be cancerous? I don't....

It doesn't worth it! I used La Roche-Posay SPF60 sunscreen when i have to be at the beach with friends. Once i am out, i get slightly darker but not bronze or anything... maybe that's because i am ethinic asian.. it is either i get dark like a charcoal or yellow. Once i get sunburn, it lasted for a year. It is just annoying. I prefer to be natural, personally, i never intend to tan myself. Yes, getting exposure of sun will somehow benefit us but generating vitamin e or d? but you are more likely to get skin cancer than generating the vitamin I have quick a large number of mole on my arms due to the great exposure of sun. I AM AGAINST EXPOSURE TO THE SUN TO TAN YOURSELF

iam with tuffchix... I hate to get sunburnt... I wear protective clothing and use sunscreen when i go out in the sun, I am aware od the harmful ultraviolet rays and hence take precautionary steps....After all...... Prevention is better than cure....

I am really pale naturally. And yes, I wish I had a constant tan, more because the men I have spoken to find this more attractive than 'milk bottle' skin. However, I would not put my health at risk. I wouldn't visit tanning salons or spend excessive time out in the sun, especially unprotected. This issue has recently become resolved with the new products on the market that allow us to build up a tan through using certain moisturisers. This then allows those of us who want darker skin to have it - without harming our health and risking cancer. PinkJellyBeans

There is no such thing as a safe tan. NOT worth the risk. Even supermodels use fake tan (at least they get one thing about their bodies right).

As an ex sun worshipper, I can attest that sun worshipping is a really dumb thing to do. I was diagnosed with malignant melanoma at the tender age of 35. I wish I ahd been smarter and less vain in my youth. While I am lucky that I still have beautiful, youthful looking skin ( not chicken skin) my appearance is marred by the hundred of scars I have from having bad spots removed. Young ladies...let's face it, scars are not pretty.

Sun tan lotions,  is another processed chemical, do we need them?  But don't despair if you or
anybody you know develops cancer, it can now be cured, I know it's hard to believe, but it's
factual, remember cancer is a business, it makes more money than you can think of...I don't
have to say more, read my post...then you'll get the facts (boden) - Title "Can natural products
    cure diseases better than drugs"
