Today is another jeans day at work.  Yaaa Hooo!  I always enjoy these fridays.  They happen several times a week.  Some offices do this every week, which makes me very envious, and even other do it daily.

One thing that always strikes me on these special days is the behaviors of my coworkers.  Some will still wear "office ware" as I call it.  The standard dress slacks/skirt and blouse/shirt.  I can't conceive of why a person would willingly wear these over jeans.  The only except to this that I understand is a couple of very overweight ladies who regularly wear skirts.  I can see the wisdom of avoiding pants at all cost when you get that heavy.

Then there are those who don't realize that permission to wear jeans does not neccesarily mean permission to show up in grunge.  They wear jeans that are worn, have holes and I can't vouch for the authenticity of what appears to be dirt.  Shirts that don't have enough material to cover enough skin or look like something out of the goodwill reject bins.  Worn tennis shoes that look as if the soles might fall off any minute.  I'm all for being comfortable and have nothing against worn clothes (which are my favorite digs after work), but doing so at work can leave people with the impression that you don't care about your job.

Then there are those who take the moderate approach.  Nice jeans, not too tight or worn, paired with a work shirt or other modest top.  Usually worn with work shoes though tasteful casual shoes are okay.  These people seem to get that should a client stop by you might still be able to do business without giving the impression that the janitor is filling in for sales that day.  They still look different enough from their "work" personna so that you might imagine how they look on weekends or evenings.

I tried to figure out if this division of styles was dependant on job title, pay level or social status and I come up empty.  Why waste energy trying to figure it out?  Well, my mind is a very busy place ;)

Hey U-I - just some confusion.  I think you meant "they happen several times a month/year?"

Anyway, yeah, it's always odd to see what different people's concept of "style" is when it's not clearly defined for them!  I don't think I would feel comfortable wearing to work clothes that I would also paint or wash cars in, but I can understand how some people, especially from more recent generations, might not realize that "casual" means "business casual" and not "what I'd wear if I wasn't at work."

In general I've found that people in their 20s-30s these days either have absolutely no concept of work attire and behavior (I think of it as the "I am what I am so the boss can suck it" crowd :P ) or else they had someone in their lives who made sure to explain to them about good dress and good manners and they're super-proper.  I've noticed that people from minorities tend to make a point of dressing extremely well.  As sad as it is, minorities don't get to coast as much as whites do.

nytquill - oops! yes, several times a year.  I'm not sure how it is in other parts of the country, but CA seems to have a special talent for "under dressing" at work.  Many of the tech companies and universities have their CEO's walking around in jeans every day.  While in theory your clothes don't dictate your skill the REAL world does notice.  Even when grocery shopping I find that if I'm still in work clothes I am called Ma'am or asked if I want help out.  Like it or not, appearances do influence people.

unique- The word casual has many meanings in today's world. Too bad it starts with appropriate dress for permanently sleeping under an overpass.

The way you describe California's business dress makes me think even we are dressed fairly well by comparison- and that's not good at all. We live in jeans, but businessmen and women do look nice.

BTV - Being a native of California I'm some times embarrassed at the way that we have managed to lower the standard of acceptable dress.  Not all companies, mind you, but a lot will use this casual dress concept to lure preferred employees.

I feel prudish having to admit that most residents (especially those who are younger) have no concept of appropriate clothing.  I hate walking onto Stanford's campus and seeing professors and other staff members with unkept hair, tie die tshirts or worse and mangy jeans.  They have brilliant minds but no social sense.  It just cheapens the experience of being one of those places when you cannot tell the difference between the staff and the janitors.

For me, every day at work is casual day. I wear jeans every day, and usually a polo shirt but occasionally a T-shirt.

You can have your slacks and ties and button-down shirts!

Some of my coworkers wear shorts in the summer, but I don't. I still have some sense of decorum, I guess.

Every day at my office is casual day. We don't really have a firm dress code except your clothes need to be clean and free of holes. A lot of our staff never really sees the public, so it doesn't matter what they're wearing. I do meet with people, so I try to dress nicely, but not fancy. I'll wear nice pants that aren't jeans and a button up shirt. But that's about as far as my dressiness goes!

I suppose it really depends on the business you're in, but I detest formality myself. I remember having a professor back in college who routinely wore tie dyed shirts and flip flops and I thought he was ultra cool. He was much more relatable than the stuffy professors in suits and ties. So I think it's just a case of what you're more comfortable with.

TS - You sound comfortable.  Do you work in a blue collar or white collar job?

queen - there is that.  thank you for helping me see the bright side.

ET - the tshirt professor was probably a brilliant man, but I would wager to guess that he wore something dressier at meetings of his peers. (conferences, etc)  You also realize that something a cut above worn out jeans is neccesary for your job.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as Tin.  I'm also pretty sure that Tin does mind work, as do I.  I guess that means it's not white collar work.  :-)

I don't know, I consider myself to be "working class", and I actually have to wear a blue anti-static smock over my clothes which I guess makes me blue collar.

But I guess technically speaking it might be "grey collar" work. I use computers and I test and repair electronic equipment. It consists of both "mind work" as kelly said as well as fine-scale manual labor (soldering, etc.).

honestly, i find that a lot of people don't seem to groke business casual or casual wear WRT the office. to me, it means a button down shirt and pants that don't look like they were pulled out of a nearby dumpster.

kelley - technical work, which I think is considered white collar.  Does it require you to interface with customers?

TS - grey collar, that's a new term for me.  I would hazard to guess that though you're comfortable in jeans that they probably don't look like goodwill rejects.

SW - that all I ask for is something that doesn't look like you're planning to clean the gutters or so. So tell me, what is this word "groke" you speak of mean?

sorry, that was a typo, shoulda been "grok". :>
