It’s amazing what people think they know, or understand. While having a conversation last Sunday with two friends of mine I discovered something interesting. People who have known me for a long time, and remember how I used to be, seem to think that aside from being high I was uninformed, and un-traveled. Of course nothing cold be further from the truth. I was always reading, writing, watching, listening, and traveling with a small pharmacy of course, but I never was anywhere near dim.
Why do I bring this up? Well it’s like this: I was listening to WNYC, or it’s NPR broadcast the other day and the host Brian Lahrer was asking people what their most important issue is for the coming elections. Most of the people were talking about immigration being the most important issue. Not the war, not the failing education system, not housing, not the state of health care, not the fact that the Bush administration is trying to eliminate the middle class so that there is simply rich, and poor, no, Immigration.
While I realize that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and the freedom to voice it, I cannot help but be amazed at what people find important in their own lives. People are entering college who cannot write a coherent sentence, obviously it’s an immigration problem, There is little affordable housing for people that work for a living, obviously it’s an immigration problem, there’s a war in Iraq that is taking the lives of some of our most talented young people, Obviously that, too, is an immigration problem. Immigration may be a problem, but I don’t see how it’s at the top of anyone’s list, even if you live in a border state which, for the record, I do. However, not too many Canadians have been slipping across the border to take jobs that no one else wants, unless you count T.V. journalist.
Now, people have gone on T.V., and radio to voice their opinions of what’s important to the future of this country, and to a lesser extent this planet. I know, and understand that selfishness is a part of the human psychological make-up; without it we cold not survive, and survival is paramount for all of us. Good Lord, though, how much selfishness is too much? If I’m living well I’m not going to deny that right to the next person no matter where they came from, or how they got here, especially if they are contributing members of my society. Gangsters, drug dealers, and some corporations don’t pay taxes, and they still benefit from the system, but someone who has come to contribute to our society, to make a better life for themselves, and us we won’t tolerate. Isn’t that interesting. Peace and Long Life.
