It’s amazing what people think they know, or understand. While having a conversation last Sunday with two friends of mine I discovered something interesting. People who have known me for a long time, and remember how I used to be, seem to think that aside from being high I was uninformed, and un-traveled. Of course nothing cold be further from the truth. I was always reading, writing, watching, listening, and traveling with a small pharmacy of course, but I never was anywhere near dim.

Why do I bring this up? Well it’s like this: I was listening to WNYC, or it’s NPR broadcast the other day and the host Brian Lahrer was asking people what their most important issue is for the coming elections. Most of the people were talking about immigration being the most important issue. Not the war, not the failing education system, not housing, not the state of health care, not the fact that the Bush administration is trying to eliminate the middle class so that there is simply rich, and poor, no, Immigration.

While I realize that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and the freedom to voice it, I cannot help but be amazed at what people find important in their own lives. People are entering college who cannot write a coherent sentence, obviously it’s an immigration problem, There is little affordable housing for people that work for a living, obviously it’s an immigration problem, there’s a war in Iraq that is taking the lives of some of our most talented young people, Obviously that, too, is an immigration problem. Immigration may be a problem, but I don’t see how it’s at the top of anyone’s list, even if you live in a border state which, for the record, I do. However, not too many Canadians have been slipping across the border to take jobs that no one else wants, unless you count T.V. journalist.

Now, people have gone on T.V., and radio to voice their opinions of what’s important to the future of this country, and to a lesser extent this planet. I know, and understand that selfishness is a part of the human psychological make-up; without it we cold not survive, and survival is paramount for all of us. Good Lord, though, how much selfishness is too much? If I’m living well I’m not going to deny that right to the next person no matter where they came from, or how they got here, especially if they are contributing members of my society. Gangsters, drug dealers, and some corporations don’t pay taxes, and they still benefit from the system, but someone who has come to contribute to our society, to make a better life for themselves, and us we won’t tolerate. Isn’t that interesting. Peace and Long Life.

a lot of people evidently have their heads up their butts, worf. there really isn't any other explanation, IMHO. ed

i agree completely, and I think you have to now realize that the republican party no longer represents you.
  • ALIENated said on Aug 09, 2006....
No party represents you or me or SW or bloc. They are all politicians. They live to represent themselves. To get themselves re-elected. However, immigration does cause problems in other areas like in the school system and the health care system. People that do not pay taxes getting services that you and I pay for. I did see the solution the other day. We pay illegal aliens to push our cars. They will do it for less than the cost of gas. So we beat the high price of gasoline. And you pay them in pesos so they have to go home to spend it. That solves the illegal alien part. (Hey, put that rotten egg down. It was just a joke.)

"People that do not pay taxes getting services that you and I pay for." This is a gross oversimplification. Many illegal immigrants work on fake social security numbers. What this means is that they do pay taxes AND they do NOT recieve all the services they pay for. I'm not saying they deserve these services, but what your implying isn't true. I completely agreed with Worf that immigration should not be at the top of our leaders list of priorities. p.s. - I live is southern Ca so I see tons of immigrants every day. I live the immigration debate and it shouldn't be a priority.
  • ALIENated said on Aug 09, 2006....
How does that work? The employer takes out taxes and then the person never gets them back? If they ever submitted a tax return on the fake social security number, I would think they would be in big trouble. Or, if the employer ever turned in taxes with the fake social security number, they would be in big trouble. I guess the employer could keep the taxes. Either way, Uncle Sam would not get them. What am I missing? Sorry Worf, I know this is not your point. I think all the things you mentioned are important, as well as the immigration problem. I wish there were some easy solutions to them all. As you can see just among the few of us, it just is not human nature to agree on everything. And some do not agree on much of anything. P.S. I know what you mean. I may have to learn Spanish to do anything around here pretty soon.
  • LtCmdrWorf1 said on Aug 10, 2006....
I think that learning Spanish, or Chinese for that matter is not such a bad idea. Peace and Long Life Worf

Spanish, maybe. Chinese, no way. For me, at least.

"As the debate over Social Security heats up, the estimated seven million or so illegal immigrant workers in the United States are now providing the system with a subsidy of as much as $7 billion a year. While it has been evident for years that illegal immigrants pay a variety of taxes, the extent of their contributions to Social Security is striking: the money added up to about 10 percent of last year's surplus - the difference between what the system currently receives in payroll taxes and what it doles out in pension benefits. Moreover, the money paid by illegal workers and their employers is factored into all the Social Security Administration's projections." "Earnings recorded under bad social security numbers are placed in an "earning suspense file" in hopes of eventually finding out to whom they belong. Since 1986, when the immigration Reform and Control Act was created to set penalties for employers who hire illegal immigrants, the file has grown rapidly." ||{1}||

Hi Worf, I’ve a couple thoughts here so I’ll break them up as best I can. Perhaps we are living in a golden age that could be easily compared to that of the Holy Roman Empire mere moments before it’s downfall. I watch the Hummers and Cummings Diesel rigs as they roll on by and find I can’t help but think of them as chariots of a sort. Palatial homes surrounded by “master plan” neighborhoods with retinal scan entry gates. And athelete/galdiators earning more money than the GNP of Fiji. Does anyone else see this slow motion meltdown in progress? On Immigration, Health Care, and Education – Perhaps there is a master plan. Perhaps it is the goal of some few to overwhelm our decrepit public systems until complete total failure is achieved. What other result could adding millions of people to the system accomplish? If you’re one of the American elite that frequent ||{1}|| , then you probably have no worries and no idea what I’m talking about. Wanna talk about ID theft and taxes.... I feel for this ||{1}|| What’s on the top of my mind as elections commence? Political Corruption, Global Domination, the end of Democracy, and how the hell did we ever came to be entertained by shows like this ||{1}||

Political Corruption, Global Domination, the end of Democracy, and how the hell did we ever came to be entertained by shows like this total crap
I'd just like to point out to you schreist, we do not live in a democracy. Democracy is basically majority rule where the will of the majority can squelch the rights of the minority. We live in a republic. In a republic, the rights of the minority are protected against the majority, hence the Constitutional Amendments. Under a republic we have unalienable rights regardless of any attempts to squelch them, whether that be the vote of the majority or the misuse and/or tyranny of government. Here are the Wikipedia definition links if you want to check out the differences yourself. ||{1}|| ||{1}||

"In a republic, the rights of the minority are protected against the majority, hence the Constitutional Amendments." Can't we change those amenments with a large enough majority :)

    Hi Schreist, et-al,

I just wanted to say that I love reading these commments, not because we all seem to be in agreement, but because we're having acomversation. One that could change the course of history.

We are just a few, but I know that there are others who would like to share their views, but either don't know how, or are afraid that they will be unpopular. Everybody needs to have a voice whether it's right, wrong, popular, or unpopular. Certain conversations need to be had, and this is a good start. Peace and Long Life.
