Its one of the great ironies of life that what gives one a great advantage in life can turn into an equally great disadvantage..... A few examples.
The Moa, a giant bird that lived in and around New Zealand as recently as 300yrs ago, the largest of which stood 9ft tall and weighed as much as 500lbs. Living in isolated areas with no major predators, these birds traded the ability to fly for size witch allowed these giants to dominate their environment. When a few major predators eventually made their way to Moa land the very thing that made them dominate, their great size, became an inability to escape and they were eaten to extinction. There's also the case of a moth that lived in the eastern US that had evolved to perfectly mimic the shape and color of the bark of the predominate local trees rendering them almost invisible. When the area became overrun with soot belching factories, over time the tree bark darkened with soot and the moths became easy targets for moth eating birds.
One more a little closer to home.
It is widely known if you want to strip an area of its resources and make it almost uninhabitable you can introduce a few packs of pigs. They are very intelligent and prolific breeders that eat anything. Left unchecked they can devastate an area. The check on these beasts is relatively simple. Just introduce a few big cats and or a pack of wolves or dogs, maybe throw in a few bears. Problem solved. Balance is restored, the check is in place.
The fact is our intelligent big brain is nothing more than an evolutionary tool, like size or camouflage, that has enabled humans to dominate the planet. Our ability to exploit and manipulate our environment is unparalleled in earths history. Any thinking reasoning person can see that left unchecked we will soon devastate our planet to the point where humans cant survive. Whats to check us. We`er so good we have defeated every large predator that's been thrown at us. Not only have we beat them but we drive the ones we fear the most to the point of extinction. We are even on the verge of defeating the microscopic world of disease causing microbes.
The only thing left to check us, is us....."I have seen the enemy and he is us"
