The Department of Homeland Security takes fingerprints of all arriving foreign visitors who arrive by plane. However they now want to finger print foreigners as they leave by plane. Which most agree would be a good way to track foreigners who over stay their visas.

However the Homeland Security Department wants private Airliners to be responsible for the job. I’m against privatizing National Security. National Security needs to be carried out by government agencies. Anything less then government oversight of National Security puts the country at an increased risk.

Not to mention Airliners need to answer to stock holders who may be more interested in their personal profit margin then the security of the United States.

Anyway thanks for reading

DHS expects the airlines to pick up the tab for that but are they going to offer the airlines any means of paying for it? sounds like it could be kinda expensive, if you ask me.

Why would being privatized mean no government oversight?
  • silverwhisper said on Mar 20, 2008....
generally, whoever controls the pursestrings dictates oversight, no?

The government oversees private schools, they oversee UPS and FEDEX and all the airlines.  Why would this be any different?
  • silverwhisper said on Mar 20, 2008....
no, the government establishes standards private schools must reach (and generally blow right the hell past). i don't see how the government oversees either UPS or fedex or the airlines. i think this is a terminology problem--can you clarify?

Ok you're right we are obviously missing each other here.  I don't see what the problem is with privatizing this so long as there are standards that the companies have to reach and of course they would need to be open to investigations.

The government sets standards on UPS and Fedex as to how they can operate, who they can hire and that kind of thing.
  • silverwhisper said on Mar 20, 2008....
OK, what i was saying is that the government is creating more regulation that will increase the costs to airlines. in order to comply w/ the new regulations, airlines will have to hire people, train 'em, etc.: increased costs.

your points are about labor law, sean. that's a wholly separate thing from what's being discussed here, no?

Nae.  UPS has to do a full federal background cbeck on their employees, amongst other annoyances as to what they can ship and how it has to be handled.

  • silverwhisper said on Mar 20, 2008....
is that mandated by the federal government?

    ed
  • SeanRenaud said on Mar 20, 2008....
    Yup.

Not to mention just because something hasn't been done before doesn't mean it can't be done in the future.
  • silverwhisper said on Mar 21, 2008....
i'm trying to understand why that's mandated by the government. ?

    ed
  • SeanRenaud said on Mar 21, 2008....
Because they have access to airplanes and cargo.  It would be a very bad place to have a terrorist.  Hense the full background checks.
  • silverwhisper said on Mar 21, 2008....
    ah--OK, that makes sense.

but that doesn't mean the government has oversight over UPS and fedex, sean. they regulate one small part of their day to day operations. to me, oversight implies actual control over tactical and strategic actions taken by the business in question.

I don't work for Fed Ex to know what other regulations are put in place.  Still I don't see a reason why the government can't be put in a position to oversee a private industry.  I mean heck half of the debates we've had around here is that government can't be trusted to watch itself.
  • silverwhisper said on Mar 22, 2008....
that depends on what you mean by "oversee", sean. it's hard to discuss when you won't tell me what you mean by that word.

That they would have the ability to go in and do audits, check for quality, security what not.  You'd make a great big checklist of things that have to be done a certain way and you'd come in and check on them every so often to make sure they are actually following regulation.

Long story but the little guy starts to fuck back.

When I was 19, I seriously damaged my shoulder through work. I was working with children at the time teaching canoing.

The injury meant time off work, bills mounting up, and pain...
