Okay, I'm on a roll.  Apparently thoughts of whether or not I'm considered "girly" have been nagging away at me.  I'm not sure why I care if others consider me girly or not.  Maybe it's a girl thing ;) (oh the irony is thick on that last comment)

For the record, I consider myself sexy yet not overly girly.  I am a little jealous of the girls who always have their make up on perfectly, smell good all the time, have pretty nails, who's wardrobes are soft and feminine and can pull of looking helpless around heavy things.

I've never been acused of being girly.  Often times guys will say stuff like "Wow, I've never seen a woman do that!" which is less flattering than you might first think.  I feel another list coming on.

Things I Do or Like That Are Definately Not Lady-like

1. I like working up a good sweat at the gym without having to "glow"
2. I use power tools more proficiently than my husband
3. I rate burps on a scale of 1-10 and compete for top scores (farts are a whole 'nother thing)
4. Swearing - nuff said
5. I enjoy working on my car doing minor maintenance
6. I don't mind opening my own doors.  Especially if it gets me where I'm going faster
7. I spill food on myself regularly.  I think my table manners might be to blame.
8. I take no pride in a sparkling clean home or being a fantastic cook, even though I can do both.
9. I like rough housing.  Why is female wrestling not a sport?
10. I don't panic if my clothes don't match perfectly and believe high heels are torture devices.

So, please feel free to add to the list.  What have you done that isn't considered girly?

Love the post!  I sort of have to borrow #2  I used to run a huge machine where I worked, and I loved being able to get all dirty, greasy and good at climbing under, around and "inside" the guts of this "dinosaur" to keep it going.  Long after I moved areas, the bosses used to come get me to fix it when it was being orenery.  I miss that feeling---and I never felt "manly"----just cool!
  • skald said on Mar 18, 2008....
I was there writing and had said a lot. I hit one button and I was not even on the Internet anymore.  I love this post too.
Today it is ladylike to sweat at the gym.
No, I don't think it is so nice to have always good looking nails and that. It is not important at all. If there is nothing behind this good and well made up person, then there is not much to her. I sometimes spill food on me too and so on.

    The car I can't fix.

This is a good post. There's nothing girly about me, to look at me i'm this short little person. Inside, i'm a total tomboy. I could out run most boys, hit a baseball out of the park. I drove semi-trailer, motorcycles, 3 and 4wheelers, horses. I guess the most girly thing i do is cook and clean. oh and i wear broom skirts *smile* take care ~see ya
  • wombat said on Mar 18, 2008....
Feeling froggy enough to insert myself and say I love Me-Myself&I's words---"broom skirts."  I love the "girly" image of that. I miss wearing my my skirts that I haven't worn lately...
  • hinana said on Mar 18, 2008....
My tomboy days are only a couple years behind me. Back then i despised girly things.
today, while I do liek gettign dressed up and stuff, I could pass fro just feeeling and lookign clean and not messy.
I hate having to put so much effort into looking good or girly
    I hate high maintenance girls
I went through the phase of HAVING to wear makeup and i made it out.
Ill fight anyone if teh circumstances are there, even though with my size i def wont win =P
    I hate being helpless..
I lift furniture myself. I do not need help with that misters.
I cant think of much more right now..
    But I still dislike Pink.

    1.power tools are AWESOME!
    2. fire is even MORE awesome!
    3. i've been known to just head out into the woods and explore
    4. mud is awesome. *grin*
    5. i like to build things.
    6. i like old trucks.

i know there's more....but.....hmmm, i can't really think of anything else right now.

killingme - we're just sexy in a different kind of way.

wombat - I think more gals would totally be into mechanical stuff and tools if they had more exposure to it.  My favorite tool is a cordless drill.  I favor DeWaltzs and drool over the heavy duty ones at Home Depot when I go there.

skald - I think you're right about having to have something behind the pretty exterior.  My knowledge of car maintenance pretty much ends at oil changes, air filter changes, wiper changes and adding water to the radiator.  Minor, but important stuff.  Oh, and I can change a tire.

Eilan - While I love shoes, I draw the line at heels higher than an inch.  I have worn higher heels, but the trade off of leg, back and foot pain is too high for the lovely curved calf.

    MM&I - I'm totally impressed that you can drive a semi-trailer.  That's something I haven't tried.  I also think it's impressive that you're quite an athlete.

hinana - That's the spirit!!  Go down fighting!  Actually there are fighting styles that being small would be a benefit.  I cannot lift as much as a man, but being a woman I have the unique ability to ask for help ;)

Fallyn - Now I'm hoping that your love of fire is the BBQ or campfire ;)  I also love exploring the woods and getting dirty doing any of the things I like is just fine by me.

SW - I know!  You'd think us ladies would see the evil in those things ;)
  • Eilan said on Mar 19, 2008....
I haven't worn a dress or skirt (or pantyhose) since August of 2005.  That might change this year, unfortunately, given my grandmothers' health issues.

I've had occasions to dress up, but I've chosen to wear slacks instead of dresses/skirts.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Mar 19, 2008....
Eilan - I wear dresses about 3-4 times a year.  Holiday work parties, etc.  I prefer to wear nice slacks to anything I can get away with.  The only good dresses are sun dresses.
  • fearing said on Mar 19, 2008....
U-I, I grew up with brothers so I can do the tom-boy thing but I'm a priss at heart.  Give me a twirly dress and I'm happy.  What have I done lately that wasn't girly?  I was raking leaves on Saturday and when I looked down, there was a baby copperhead at my feet.  I didn't scream or yell or even jump back.  I pointed it out so it could be killed.  Yesterday I caught a lizard for Scooter Bug too.  Un-girly enough?
  • Zayda said on Mar 19, 2008....
I'm a study in contrasts; I can be really girlie but then be really un-girlie. I love heels and don't think they are torture devices. I live in them from August through the first part of May. After that, I live in mostly flat sandals. :)

Let's see un-girlie things about me:

    1. I grew up fishing with my dad so I cut my own bait.
    2. I know the best times and nights and locations to go digging for nightcrawlers. (Worms don't gross me out. Neither do fish eggs.)
    3. I know how to tie my own flies for fly fishing.
    4. I know how to filet and debone fresh fish.
    5. I love going camping in a tent.
    6. I've known how to handle a gun since I was my son's age.
    7. I know how to clean a gun.
    8. I know how to change the oil on my car and do so regularly.
    9. I also grew up around deer hunters so I know how to field dress a deer.
    10. I know how to kill and prepare a live chicken.
    11. Despite loving heels, I do prefer slacks to dresses.

  • uniquely-ironic said on Mar 19, 2008....
fearing - I think my skin crawled a little at the mention of catching the lizard.  I'm afraid I haven't conquered that one yet.

Zayda - I didn't realize how proficient a hunter you are!  That's great!!  I do have to admit that being raised a vegetarian I do not have the inclination to kill animals for food, though if the meat has been prepped I will cook it.
  • Zayda said on Mar 19, 2008....
LOL. U-I: Knowing how to field dress a deer doesn't make me a proficient hunter. :) It simply means I know how to field dress a deer. I'd rather someone else do the shooting.

Now fishing on the other hand; there's something relaxing and therapeutic about it. I miss when we lived in Alaska and went fishing regularly. One of my fondest memories from when I was young was watching my dad make fishing flies. I miss salmon fishing too. And I miss watching the trawlers come in with their catches from the bay as well.

  • fearing said on Mar 19, 2008....
U-I and Zayda talking about fishing - I love to fish but I can girly that up in a flat second.  You are going to laugh because I take those yellow dish washing gloves with me because I can't stand to have fish or worms on my hands.  YUCK!!!
  • Zayda said on Mar 19, 2008....
Fearing: LOL. I'm weird. I don't mind the feel of worms in my hands. I remember the first time I showed my son a worm when I was digging in the flower beds one day. I had a worm in the palm of my hand and he wanted NOTHING to do with it. He was about three at the time; now, they don't bother him so much.
  • fearing said on Mar 19, 2008....
Zayda, that's cute about your son.  Worms are kinda freaky the first time you see them with no eyes or distinguishable head and wriggling.

  • beyondtheveil said on Mar 19, 2008....
unique- I can find much more "sexy" in most of the things you and zayda mentioned than a girl that has perfect make-up, has pretty nails, has soft wardrobes, and looks helpless. Sexy comes in many fashions.
  • hottips4u said on Mar 19, 2008....
I carry a pistol and once shot a man in a parking lot when I was 22.  In the side and in self defense (old acquaintance, drunk, angry smacked me twice and he caught  a knee to the groin, he went down but came up with a knife madder yet and holding my truck door...I shot him, he let go, tried to run and passed out with knife in hand from loss of blood.  He got 7 1/2 - 15 a 3 new felonies, a hole in and out for his efforts.

Some men find that I carry a pistol sexy, some just plain think its crazy.  Saved me once, may again, I like it. ; )  Sexy or not.

    1.  I swear like a sailor.

    2.  I love dirty jokes.

    3.  Belching should be an Olympic sport.  My son and daughter and I used to compete.

    4.  I can't remember the last time I wore a skirt.

    5.  I only own 3 pairs of shoes.

    6.  I hate to shop.

    7.  I used to spend a lot of time getting dusty and dirty at softball fields.  I loved it.

    8.  I don't use perfume.

  • destinydiva said on Mar 19, 2008....
lol rating burps!!!  I do rate farts though :-), and drink beer in a pint glass in some pubs!  and I drive like a man apparantly (tons have people have said that over the years)  I'm good at fixing things...but in truth..thats only cus I have to! not cus I want to...  I'm impressed you can fix your car, I only learnt to check oil and water last year!!  guess I am a little girly/old fashioned  in some senses...  as much as I love my independance, I also like being taken care of :-) xx
  • starchini said on Mar 19, 2008....

Ive been accused of being a girly girl simply for the way i look.  high heels hurt but i think they are totally worth it because they make my legs go on and on and on.  I smell great 24/7, I wear makeup to the gym, only bc it was on all day at work (like im gonna wash it off)  I paint my nails and style my hair and cordinate my outfits and generally try my best to look as nice as i feel on the inside.  Im a cosmetologist i think these things are important to how we present ourselves to society.  But this is just how i look!  On the inside im a complete tomboy.  I have a passion for offroading, mudbogging, fishing, camping, i swim in lakes that cows poop in.  I fix windshields for a living, i know my way around a garage, i am always the first to help move the refrigerator, i help my dad with his 1969 pontiac GTX, i know way more about vehicles than the average girl.  I drink and party like Brett Michaels.  I burp i fart and regular describe my latest bowel movements to my friends.  I love the outdoors.  Am i a girlie girl or a tomboy?

  • starchini said on Mar 19, 2008....
There is no reason we cant look our best while 4wheeling in a swamp.  I HATE SHOPPING!!!
  • uniquely-ironic said on Mar 19, 2008....

killing - and the black ones are dress shoes?

BTV - Lordy I hope so!!  I'm no soft and fluffy gal but I think I'm worth the trouble of getting to know me.

hottips - scary about the angry drunk.  I shoot pretty good, but concealed permits are too much trouble to get.  I have a bat handy in my car for defense.

missmimi - we have a lot in common, though I consider shopping a sport that I could probably go pro in ;)

destiny - how does one drive like a man?  I drive a stick shift, which some people find interesting "considering I'm a girl".  I also can parallel park really really good.

starchini - you're a very interesting hybrid.  I do see though how your appearance is linked to your living.  Sort of a walking advertisement.

  • killingme4u said on Mar 19, 2008....
hell no.no dress shoes on this tomboy.hey you got a bat handy also?i got mine sittin at my door.  :))
  • uniquely-ironic said on Mar 19, 2008....
killing - Mine is more like a club shaped like a bat with a metal rod inside the middle (for weight) that I carry behind the driver's seat.  I learned some escrima arts and lua arts so I'm probably more handy with a rod or club than a gun.
  • hottips4u said on Mar 19, 2008....
Depends on what State your in ; I'm sure it makes major differences.  I know I have to have mine in both NY and NC because I normally reside pretty much evenly in each throughout the year.  NY was by far more pain staking than NC or Va's for that matter.

I camp, hunt fish and trap. I skin animals and stretch hides for sales in Manhattan twice a season.  I can run a backhoe, plow snow w/ the 4x4 and a fair hand at design and application of synthetic stucco. Enjoy the smell of cowshit and bacon frying. ; )

  • uniquely-ironic said on Mar 19, 2008....
hottips - you sound like a handy girl to take along on a wilderness trip.
  • hottips4u said on Mar 19, 2008....
I am at home in a meeting room or along the salmon river miles away from anyone.

The point is, I am as comfortable catching my dinner as I am preparing it...hehe

I much prefer a country life than a concrete jungle.  We live up-State but we enjoy the City for holidays, shopping and consuming Rubens...lov um and they are absolutely huge !!

Guess I am much gal as pal....hehe

    um....fire.....
alas....i contain my love of fire to campfires and bbq.....though if i could ...without danger.....i'd set the biggest fires anywhere......just for the thrill of it.
i've convinced my dad to teach me to weld!

    more un-girly stuff. *grin*
i LOVE loud firecrackers. every 4th of july me and my male cousins would have contests to see who could set off the most elaborate loud configuration by stringing them together.

    i like backpacking....though i haven't gone in a LONG time.

baseball is awesome....i'm teaching my daughter.
    i enjoy watching football.

camping in a tent for extended periods.
the only girly thing i MUST have while camping is at LEAST a primitive shower facility nearby.

i was a long time ago learning to play the drums.......i'd still love to continue with that....someday maybe.

i very much love video and computer games.
i'm excited about spore coming out....someday. *laughing*
i'm into role playing games too...
i'm a geek.....not much associated with girly girls.

but i also love high heels.
so long as i could wear them when i want to....and not have to wear them to work in all day

  • lfbno7 said on Mar 19, 2008....
What have I done that isn't considered girly? Hmm, that's a tough one. I guess watching guys fight on tv. I guess fighting in martial arts classes. Playing baseball. Other than that, I'm not really very gender-specific and I do lots of things that are girly, I guess. I like romantic movies. I cry when I see something that seems really touching. I donno, I guess I'm as girly as the next guy. And I have no mind of my own and am easily led around by the nose, if that's girly. I don't get into fights with people. I let people interrupt me. That's pretty girly. Is it?
  • uniquely-ironic said on Mar 19, 2008....

Fallyn - I think, after some consideration, that we will have to designate camping as a neutral activity.  It would seem that tomboys and ladies both enjoy it.  Fire is cool.

Mr.7 - Can guys be girly?  Now you have me pondering the possibility.

  • Fallyn said on Mar 19, 2008....
UI....it's GOTTA be.....i know city boys that wont touch camping with a ten foot pole......so ...yeah.

    4. i slouch when i walk.
    5. i like to wear tshirts and boy shorts.
    6. i'm messy when i eat.

well that's all i could think of right now... =)
