So for my handfasting I had the nail lady put on those acrylic nails since I'd managed to break a few of my own.  I wanted to have pretty graceful fingers since the focus was on the hands for a good part of the ceremony.  I'd never had nails that long.  They also put that gel stuff on them so that I could get a pretty french manicure.  Everything looked great.

By the end of the evening my hands were in such pain.  Each fingertip ached.  It took me a while to realize why.  I have an allergy to most adhesives.  The kind of allergy that makes me break out in rashes for bandaids, develop blisters, etc.  They had used superglue stuff to attach the acrylic nails and my fingertips were screaming protests.

A couple of days later my hands were better.  I think the natural nails had grown out enough to keep the glue away from my skin.  I thought things might be better and even considered keeping the nails.  I even had them shortened and filled the next week.  Bad idea.

I'm no fluffy girl.  I don't wear pink more than maybe once a year.  I think I'm allergic to ruffles and having to spend more than 5 minutes on hair and make-up is intolerable.  Apparently even though my hands looked fabulous they had become useless appendages.

I developed a short list of things you can't do easily with long nails.

1. type - too much noise and it slows me down.
2. open soda cans - you have to use "tools" to tip the little tab up
3. pick up coins - I tried and it wasn't pretty.  Had to get help.
4. peel address labels - it's part of my job and no matter how careful I was stuff would go crazy and end up sticking to my hands or the wrong thing.
5. play the piano - same as typing and your hand position is wrong

In an effort to see the bright side of things I developed an equally short list of things you can do better with long nails.

1. poke someone's eye out
2. poke your own eye out
3. finally able to scratch that itch on my back
4. inadvertantly scratch everyone in my immediate surroundings
5. get stuff stuck under the nails that you look at with questions (perhaps eye goo)

Okay, so it should be obvious at this point that I am not a long fake nail person.  After about 2 weeks of torture I took my clippers out and did away with them.  I am now sporting some really freaky nails as the gel stuff makes the tips of them really thick and there is a band of "virgin" nail bed at the base of each finger.  I figure it will take about a month to be rid of it all.  I suppose I could overpay someone to sand off the gel stuff, but since I'm not vain enough to be bothered with it I'll keep the money.

soak your fingers in nail polish remover for about 10 mn.
the gel and acryllic will peel or dissolve...

    been there, done that.

    i really LOVE fake nails.
    they look so good.
and for a few years i was great at keeping up with them.
but you're right.  there are alot of things you can't do with them, and i was finding that i averaged one or two broken or cracked nails a week, which necessitaed one or two trips to the salon.

i just don't have time for that.

i wish i did though.  i wish i didn't have to wash and fold clothes-  that was where most of the problems happened.

oh well, maybe when i retire???  lol

SL - Thank you for the tip!!  I didn't know if that would work, and frankly I've been too busy to try it.  They do look fabulous.  I'd love to be able to have a lifestyle that's compatable with them too, but I really love using my hands to work and play.

I tried fake nails.....they do look pretty but on top of the reasons you've given on the negative, they also cost much to maintain so I had to do away with them. Now am natural but paint my nails myself. The first few times were messy, but now am getting good at it. May be I should apply to work at a nail shop and make me some extra money.

unique- I don't have much to say about fake nails - in fact nothing. Just wanted you to know I really like your sense of humor and reading these posts.

Just wanted to say I thought this was funny, too--but sorry about the hassle with the fake nails.  I got tickled at your lists--especially about the eye goo!

cntlvmenuf - I wonder how much those gals make?  I don't know that I'd want to do it with the fumes and picky women, but I'm glad that some gals do.

BTV - I think I'd be more worried if you DID have a lot to say about fake nails ;)

wombat - it was a learning experience.  Can't say you'd ever catch me with those types of nails again.

    Lol.
I can do my own gel nails, and I still pick them off after a couple days.
For the length, that you guys seem to be having trouble with, why dont you just get ones and keep them pretty short. Just have teh french tips done?
also uniquely, instead of acrylic nails, try out gel nails and ask them to use builder to make the white tip. that way, theres no glue =)

hinana - I used the acrylic to lengthen the nail originally because I had managed to break a few of my own down to the nubs.  They used gel to do the french manicure and then a week later to fill the base in.  I did have them shortened, but I'm hopelessly useless with anything past to tips of my fingers.  It was an experience ;)

killing - we're agreed.  No long nails unless we find a "job" for them.

UI - up until 5 months ago, for 10 years I have had silk wraps on my nails.  They take a piece of silk fabric and glue it to the top of your nail to make them strong.  Every two weeks I would return for a manicure; every 8 for a new set of wraps.

As a result, I had not broken a nail in 10 years.  And I DO use my nails as tools - screwdrivers, scrapers, to open soda cans, etc. In fact the only thing I couldn't do was take out my contact lenses in a traditional way (but I developed a way to remove and place them in my eye which my eye doctors think is amazing - too hard to explain in words)

Since removing them, I have HATED MY NAILS.  I had to stop for financial reasons (I was unemployed and couldn't spend money on this) - but also decided to grow my natural nails back.  I had not realized how much damage I had done to them - but they are almost fully grown out and starting to get strong again.

BTW - I am allergic to acrylic so I couldn't do the acrylic nails - PPS - would I put wraps on again - I don't know?

FG - I've heard that the silk wraps are very strong.  The fact that they would glue them to my nails would make them impossible for me to use even if I could tolerate the limited hand dexterity.
