Today I drove to the place where I used to live when I was a child form 0 to 8. My parents and I used to walk to my granny's every Sunday and have lunch with her. I wondered how long it would take me now. It took me half an hour and then another half hour back. Here are some pictures from my walk I will post the way back to morrow. It was such a wonderful day and I really want to give you some of it. So here we go. My school was very near to my home.

This is my first school. I was there just one year and I still remember the songs I learned there.

That is a nice house. I never wondered when I was a child why some houses were nicer than others and I lived in a very small apartment.
Ganga í vesturbæ 004

Typical buildings in this part.

One this corner was a shop where I used to buy candy for about a cent. Those were the days You can see the Pearl from so many places in Reykjavík. It is in the background but it did not exist when I was a  child. The hill was there with hot water tanks however.
Ganga í vesturbæ 013

We used to pass the old folks home. I think this is the first one in Reykjavík
Ganga í vesturbæ 016

These gray blocks were the first council houses in Reykjavík built in the 1920's or 30's for working men and this was a great improvement then.

I waited until the light was red and the street was clear. In the old days there was not the constant humming from the traffic.

Spring is already around the corner.

Nice feeling in the air.

Hi there what are you doing? Taking a picture of me.
Ganga í vesturbæ 030

Typical for this part.
Ganga í vesturbæ 031

Hidden behind houses. I don't know if you would find this but I knew it was there.

Now I need to go around the corner.

I was there. My father was born there 88 years ago. Upstairs. He was a twin and his mother's name was Sólveig. Downstairs was the owner an other Sólveig and a mother of twins too.

Oh, what a nice walk with you my friend.  I do see spring is a bit more ahead there then here.  It all looks so clean and neat there.  The school is a very nice building also, and so isn't the old peoples home.  Thanks for taking me along, it was a wonderful day!  :)

I'm always impressed with how neat and clean things look in your part of the world Skald.  I do have a question about your grandmother's house.  It appears to be set on a thin wedge which would tilt the house.  Or is the street at an angle and the wedge makes the house sit flat?

Quiet. It was pleasure taking you along and who knows maybe you will be with me,soon just not in spirit. lol
Uniqyely.  We usually use what we call base. It is concrete and dug down. Cemented often and  you properly see a part of it. I think it was under there where my dad played the violin as a child for a hen that got hypnotized. lol Dad was self learned.  Thanks for the comment.

your post with its beautiful pictures are so touching, as always. I too like to visit places of my yesteryear.

I always love your pictures and the comments you add to tell us of your beautiful country.  I wish I lived there!  I used to take drives and visit places where I grew up and look at all the changes.  I miss that, being so far from "home."

Cindylu.  I do understand, even though you are young now. I was the same. lol
Wombat. Oh that is so sad my dear. I hope you can visit sometime though. Thanks Wombie.

skald:  I hope so too, and one of the things I will do is go to see if my "tree" is still there.  A huge old oak that even though there is a different house there now, they just couldn't bring themselves to cut down that ancient, ugly and almost dead tree down!  I wish I knew all the history of that tree!
  • skald said on Mar 18, 2008....
Why do you say that the tree is ugly? Is it not great that it is still there. Yes, I see you say it is almost dead. Then it is strange. I wish I knew the story too.
  • wombat said on Mar 18, 2008....
skald:  I guess that the story of the tree is mostly mine...and there's alot to it.  Maybe I will write about it next time I get the urge to spill more about me.  Maybe my use of the word "ugly" has hidden meaning.  Thanks for the reply, and I will think about it.

Uniquely.   I see what you mean now, I don't know why the house is slanting like that. The street in hilly but the other way. I think they have put new corrugated iron on it and that is done strangely. You can see that it is new because it is not painted. They have to wait 2 years and let it weahter before they can paint it. The house used to be yellow .

yes, skald, maybe some day I will walk with you!  ;)

Dear Skald, thank you for giving us a taster of how things look in Iceland, it is beautiful :-))  I esp love the house where your father was born, it has so much character.  Like Quietone said, I hope we can walk there together one day ;)  The sky is so lovely and blue in those photos and everything looks so crisp.  Thank you for showing us your life (((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))))

    Love Polar

Polar.  When we walk there. I hope the weather will be good, like it was the day I made that walk. I know of a certain guest house on the West side of town which is almost around the corner from dad's house.lol

What a wonderful walk you had. I love when you share your pictures for us.

I love looking at buildings because I'm always taken by the lines of them. You have some lovely pictures of building to share, but I'm fascinated by the school building. I really like the round portion of the building.

And the shot of the dog as he looks at you on your walk is really a nice touch.

You have a really good eye for detail and for the composition of your pictures, Skald.

A lovely post skald, I'm planning to do something similar in the summer, go around Essex where some of my mothers ancestors were from.

    Dear skald,

Thank you for sharing those photos and memories.  You have given me some ideas for my own works.  What a lovely town!   It's a refreshing change from some suburbia in the US.  Cheers, SG

Scottish.  Thanks so much. I have seen your name around and I thought you were from Scotland, a country that I love.
