The National Organization For Women  (N.O.W.) adopted a  "Bill of Rights” for women in 1968.

That  "Bill of Rights”   consisted of a list of eight demands…upon the U.S. federal government.

These were:

I.               Passage  Of  The Equal Rights Constitutional Amendment

We Demand:That the United States Congress immediately pass the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution to provide that "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex" and that such then be immediately ratified by the several States.

II. Enforcement of   Laws Banning Sex Discrimination in Employment.

. We Demand:That equal employment opportunity be guaranteed to all women, as well as men by insisting that the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission enforce the prohibitions against sex discrimination in employment under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with the same vigor as it enforces the prohibitions against racial discrimination.

III. The granting of  Maternity Leave Rights in Employment and in Social Security Benefits.

. We Demand: That women be protected by law to insure their rights to return to their jobs within a reasonable time after childbirth without loss of seniority or other accrued benefits and be paid maternity leave as a form of social security and/or employee benefit.

IV. An allowance  of  Tax Deductions for Home and Child Care Expenses for Working Parents.

We Demand: Immediate revision of tax laws to permit the deduction of home and child care expenses for working parents.

V. The establishment of free public  Child Day Care Centers  nationwide.

We Demand: That child care facilities be established by law on the same basis as parks, libraries and public schools adequate to the needs of children, from the pre-school years through adolescence, as a community resource to be used by all citizens from all income levels.

VI. Taking steps to guarantee  Equal and Unsegregated Education for all

We Demand: That the right of women to be educated to their full potential equally with men be secured by Federal and State legislation, eliminating all discrimination and segregation by sex, written and unwritten, at all levels of education including college, graduate and professional schools, loans and fellowships and Federal and State training programs, such as the job Corps.

VII. Equal Job Training Opportunities for all  and Welfare   Allowances for Women in Poverty.

We Demand: The right of women in poverty to secure job training, housing and family allowances on equal terms with men, but without prejudice to a parent's right to remain at home to care for his or her children; revision of welfare legislation and poverty programs which deny women dignity, privacy and self respect.

VIII. The Right of Women to Control their Reproductive Lives trough the free availability of contraceptives and abortion on demand.

We Demand: The right of women to control their own reproductive lives by removing from penal codes the laws limiting access to contraceptive information and devices and laws governing abortion.

This “Bill Of Rights” of the National Organization For Women was (and still is) a great program  for creating and maintaining gender equality in the United States of America…

However……

Looking  at these eight demands some forty years after they were first adopted by N.O.W.  I am deeply saddened that woman have had such limited success in getting these eight demands satisfied.

Does anyone out there feel the same way?

Does anyone out there believe (as I do ) that we need to revive  the Feminist Movement?

Let me know….O.K.???

Yeah, well maybe when NOW is done protesting the Augusta National Golf course they can start lobbying Congress.

I swear NOW is probably the most irrelevant organization in this country. Women are being imported in the US and forced to work as prostitutes - they are, for all intents and purposes - slaves. And NOW is protesting a golf club and demanding Federally funded day care and abortion on demand??? What kind of rights organization ignores the plight of so many of its poorest constituents?

The ERA expired unratified for a reason - a constitutional amendment is not necessary for any of the things listed above to become reality.

The Constitution should be about EVERYONE, not just people of one gender.

    Dear Mr. Curmudgeon

Thank you ever so much for responding to one of my blog entries….

What a shame, that since I started blogging here, again, on Soulcast, you have been the only one who has taken the time to respond to my posts...

I know you disagree with me, sir, but at least you don’t ignore me…..and I can’t help but appreciate that…

How sad, that no one  seems to really love the concept of Egalitarianism the way I do…..

OH WELL!  Perhaps someday I’ll encounter some kindred spirits here on this website….

I’ll just have to hang on and keep posting till then!

Now…let me get down to the business of responding to your comments…..

Your words are in black; my replies are in blue……

Yeah, well maybe when NOW is done protesting the Augusta National Golf course they can start lobbying Congress.

You know……on some level I agree with you….

Now, to be sure ,protesting sexism and male chauvinist  exclusivity in tournament golf is a worthy cause, but it does seem to me that there are many other issues which ought to take priority over that in this male dominated , patriarchal society (and world) we live in.

I swear NOW is probably the most irrelevant organization in this country. Women are being imported in the US and forced to work as prostitutes - they are, for all intents and purposes - slaves.

On this issue I agree with you 100%!   The sexual slavery   of women (and children) is male dominance , and the exploitation of women (and children),at it’s absolute worst!

Sexual slavery is a concern that ought to receive top priority on the issues agenda of every Feminist (and Human

    Rights) organization in this country.

And NOW is protesting a golf club and demanding federally funded day care and abortion on demand??? What kind of rights organization ignores the plight of so many of its poorest constituents?

Look…..male chauvinism is where you find it….

So, if N.O.W. & Martha Burk, (Chair of the National Council of Women's Organizations)  are (or were)  protesting the sexual exclusiveness of The Augusta National Golf Club, certainly you must realize, Mr. Curmudgeon that this issue had (and has) far broader ramifications  than just that!

What N.O.W.-----and other Feminist groups------were     REALLY protesting was  sex discrimination in ALL private clubs!

At least, that’s my understanding of the whole flap over that issue.

    Know what I mean?

And besides, Martha Burk (The woman who raised a ruckus over the golf club’s “men only rule”) has done quite a lot to combat sexism in America……

She has  written a book alleging sex discrimination in corporate America.

And -----in the not too distant past-----she filed a  sex discrimination lawsuit against Smith Barney,  the  retail brokerage giant (and division of Citigroup) charging :"pervasive gender discrimination" in the financial services industry.

So, if Burk, kind of went off on a tangent on the golf club issue, I think she can be forgiven for that little idiosyncrasy….

Because  she is concerned about far larger issues …..like sticking it to the sexist “old boy network” on Wall Street.

Now, as for federally funded day care centers and abortion on demand…..

Those are two of THE MOST important issues for any feminist movement in this country to fight for!

And, incidentally, Mr.  Curmudgeon, poor (and working class) women would be the immediate & primary beneficiaries of free federal child care  programs and abortion on demand…..So what on earth  are you talking about when you say that N.O.W. “ignores the plight of so many of it’s poorest constituents”???

The ERA expired unratified for a reason - a constitutional amendment is not necessary for any of the things listed above to become reality.

    OH! I disagree!

The E.R.A. was never ratified because a lot of right wing fanatics: Phyllis Schlafly (THAT TRAITOR TO HER SEX) at the top of the list, and leaders of the  religious right,(like: Jerry Falwell  & Pat Robertson, etc ) told the American people a lot of lies, like, how their grand mothers would be drafted and that men and women would have to use the same bathrooms, right in front of each other, and many, many more, such falsehoods and gross exaggerations!

And sadly….the American people believed the propaganda churned out by this CONservative campaign of fear inspiring misinformation!

Bottom line: If we are ever to destroy “the old boy network” in corporate America , and establish true gender equality in everything from the job market, to education , to the heading of households ….and so much more…..

WE NEED TO WRITE SEXUAL EQUALITY INTO OUR NATIONAL CONSTITUTION!

The Constitution should be about EVERYONE, not just people of one gender.

HEY!  The text of the E.R.A. reads as follows:

    Equal Rights Amendment

Section 1. Equality of Rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state on account of sex.

Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.

Section 3. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification.

Hence…had it been past, the E.R.A. would have guaranteed  and established full fledged gender equality for everyone!
