This country was founded based on the ideals of those who wanted the freedom to follow whatever religion they desired to follow as theirs. Religious freedom as well as freedom from taxation without representation in any manner is now the norm.
In England, there was one religion at that time and the King did not tolerate any other religious beliefs. Believers in other religions were persecuted for their beliefs and convictions to do so freely. Both countries have obviously learned to be more understanding of at least most religions today.
Too often religious freedoms are used for personal gain and at least back then it was avoided for the most part. It just so happened that most of the founding fathers were believed to be Christian in faith. And with the terms in “God We Trust” this is a pledge they believed in my mind as religious freedom from oppression in England. It was not meant to say that all “Americans” were Christians.
I believe that most of today’s Christians want to believe that our country is based entirely on Christian Values. Were that true the “brotherly love” expressed in early Philadelphia would still be felt today. Instead of the “Care for oneself only” approach that many church going Christians follow. Not all do but, that doesn’t mean that many don’t.
Our founding fathers want everyone to have the right to freedom from oppression of any kind with regards to the majority. Unfortunately, these days that still tends to oppress some of the many people it was intended to protect. Religion and power do not mix well.
And Christian faith in the US is both at an outstanding rate and a detriment to the legal state of our country. How can you justify religious freedom while oppressing others right to believe what they are so richly entitled to believe? How can you condemn any protection of oneself and property? Condemn a woman’s right to not bring a child into the world they knowingly cannot take care of? Then prosecute for failing to do so, when she fails?

The founding fathers owned slaves and wrote into the Constitution that slaves counted as three-fifths of a human being. In this day and age, that would not be considered freedom for all.

And the fact is that the peope who settled in the 13 Colonies were for the most part biblical literalists who wanted to be free to worship the way THEY wanted. Tensions between Christian denominations persisted all throughout our history. During the Revolitionary War, Anglicans in America changed their name to Episcopalian. Catholics were reviled here for a very long time. It wasn't about anybody practicing any faith. It was always about groups of people coming here to practice as they saw fit.

Our concept of freedom - especially religious freedom - has changed from the time our founding fathers walked these lands. We need to think about what religious freedom means today. For me religious freedom includes our being free  to bring faith into the public arena. If it sometimes causes friction, so be it.

You say "many" Christians care "only for themselves" - of which denomination? Baptist? Methodist? Episcopalian? Pentecostal? Unitarian? I dare you to point the finger at a specific group of Christians and tell us exactly who  you think cares only for themselves. People who are arguing against abortion on demand would claim that they are doing so out of care for the unborn. What self-minded person would risk arrest by picketing an abortion clinic?

And by the way, there are many Christians in mainstream denominations who agree with the "woman's right too choose" argument. It's only the ones who protest loudly and get themselves arrested who garner headlines.

It isn't right to generalize about people of any faith. "Many" just doesn't cut it. If you can't be specific about who you're criticizing, maybe it's better to do a little  research first. You might find that there are more Christians who agree with your position than those who don't.
