This country was founded based on the ideals of those who wanted the freedom to follow whatever religion they desired to follow as theirs. Religious freedom as well as freedom from taxation without representation in any manner is now the norm.
In England, there was one religion at that time and the King did not tolerate any other religious beliefs. Believers in other religions were persecuted for their beliefs and convictions to do so freely. Both countries have obviously learned to be more understanding of at least most religions today.
Too often religious freedoms are used for personal gain and at least back then it was avoided for the most part. It just so happened that most of the founding fathers were believed to be Christian in faith. And with the terms in “God We Trust” this is a pledge they believed in my mind as religious freedom from oppression in England. It was not meant to say that all “Americans” were Christians.
I believe that most of today’s Christians want to believe that our country is based entirely on Christian Values. Were that true the “brotherly love” expressed in early Philadelphia would still be felt today. Instead of the “Care for oneself only” approach that many church going Christians follow. Not all do but, that doesn’t mean that many don’t.
Our founding fathers want everyone to have the right to freedom from oppression of any kind with regards to the majority. Unfortunately, these days that still tends to oppress some of the many people it was intended to protect. Religion and power do not mix well.
And Christian faith in the US is both at an outstanding rate and a detriment to the legal state of our country. How can you justify religious freedom while oppressing others right to believe what they are so richly entitled to believe? How can you condemn any protection of oneself and property? Condemn a woman’s right to not bring a child into the world they knowingly cannot take care of? Then prosecute for failing to do so, when she fails?
