Here are some proven success techniques that will help you to achieve success and happiness in life. The first step is to set yourself clear goals, to define precisely what you want to achive. Goals provide direction to your behaviour and guide your thoughts and actions to the desired out comes. Goal plans enable you to go beyond momentary influences and organize your behaviour over extended periods of time. Goals should be an extension of your values, your most important fundamental beliefs. Specific goals are better than general ones.
Self choosen goals are better than assigned ones. Choose goals that are challenging but reachable. Write down your short term and long term goals. This will help you in establishing priorities and in deciding on the actions that you must engage in Form a very intense, extremely vivid mental picture of what you want. Verbalise your mental picture with a brief, concise, forceful “GOAL COMMAND” Repeat it every day to make it easier for your sub- conscious mind to embrace them. As Swami Vivekananda Says “Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life think of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success” prepare an ‘Action Plan’ out lining the specific steps needed to accomplish the result you want. You must get timely feed- back on your progress and be able to modify your strategies when changes occur. Sometimes, even if the goals are not attained the resultant consequences, feed-back or reinforcement can be beneficial. There are literally millions of things in this world which are right and which need to be done but to which you must mentally, if not vocally say “No” specific goals are better than general ones.
No person has the time and the ability to do any but a few things which need to be done.
The proven success method is this:
1) Say “No” generally.
2) Say “yes” very, very selectively
You simply concentrate your thought, time and effort on your one main goal. You cannot possibly do all of the things you will be asked to do. So you are going to have to say ‘No’ to a lot of desirable and worth while things, simply because they are “incompatible” with the necessary work you must do to reach your main goal. Don’t be afraid of failure. Failure is an accepted procedure in experimenting, research, testing and all scientific forms of “finding out”. Failure is simply the means of finding out what will not work so that it can be eliminated in the search for what will work. So there is no need to think of failure as something to be feared and avoided. Edison and his staff conducted 17,000 experiments which failed before they succeeded in the one experiment which enabled them to extract latex in substantial Quantities from just one variety of plant, which was worth the 17,000 failures!
Besides, failure is good for your character and personality. It is a challenging experience. The next step is to develop proper self concept. What you think about yourself is very important persons with high self – esteem feel unique, competent, secure, empowered and connected to the people around them. Whereas people who have poor self concept feel insecure, take self confidence and become with drawn. To improve your self esteem, become aware of your hidden potentialities and activate them. Take note of your short comings and drawbacks and try to overcome them. You can prepare a “weed- list” and a ‘seed list’. Believe firmly that you can improve. As the Bhagavat Gita says “one should lift oneself by one’s own efforts and should not degrade oneself; for one’s own self is one’s friend, and one’s own self is enemy.
Another aspect of self – development is “Time management”. Time is your most valuable resource, successful people are those who manage their time efficiently. They find time for every thing, reading news papers, jogging and even occasional visits to the cinema. Since they have planned every thing, they feel relaxed and do their work efficiently what about you? Do you make optimum use of your time? To know this, write down all you did yester day with the amount of time spent, on each activity. Then you will realize how much time is being wasted on useless activities and why you are not able to achive your targets in time. Draw a time table for your daily activities and try to stick to it. Keeping a diary is another useful habit which you must cultivate. This will help you review and monitor your progress.
Many people make themselves miserable by trying to imitate others. Mrs. Edith Alfred was one such person. She remained unhappy even after she married in to a poised and self – confident family. A chance remark by her mother-in-law transformed her life. While talking about how she brought her children up, her mother – in –law said “No matter what happened, I always insisted on their being themselves”. For better or for worse, you must play your own instrument in the orchestra of life. As Emerson says “Envy is ignorance and imitation is suicide” No real benefit will come to you except through your own toil. Nature has given you the power. You only know what you can not do. So find yourself and be yourself. There are people who keep on grumbling and complaining. For them here is the story of Herald Abbott who used to worry a lot. One day, he happened to see a man who had no legs but looked cheerful and happy. He greeted him with a grand smile. At that moment, Harold Abbott felt ashamed of his self pity. He realized how rich he was. He had two legs and he could walk. This realization changed his mind. That was a turning point in his life. If we want to be happy, all we have to do is to concentrate on the ninety percent things that are right in our lives and ignore the ten percent that are wrong. So it’s time we started to take our health more seriously and become Vegetarian.
It is the wrong concept to think that if we do not eat flesh foods (meat, fish and poultry) that we are not getting a proper balanced diet and that we may become ill by leaving flesh foods out of our diet completely. On the contrary numerous researches and studies have shown that vegetarians live longer lives and are less prone to many diseases that meat eaters are more open to. Eating flesh foods significantly increases major chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer, kidney disease and osteoporosis.
Flesh foods are loaded with contaminants such as hormones, herbicides and pesticides and antibiotics. As these toxins are all fat - soluble, they concentrate in the fatty flesh of animals which meat eaters are taking into their bodies.
We need to stop and think of the effects of eating meat has on our body and psychic. A widely known saying from the Vedas states that "Speech is the essence of humanity." All of what humanity thinks and ultimately becomes is determined by the expression of ideas and actions through speech and its derivative, writing. Speech brings everything to life. Ideas remain unactualized until they are brought to life through the power of speech.
Similarly, The New Testament, Gospel of John, starts "In the beginning was The Word. And the Word was with God and the Word was God..."
In mainstream Vedic practices, most Buddhist techniques and classical Hinduism, mantra is viewed as a necessity for spiritual advancement and high attainment. In The Kalachakra Tantra, by the Dalai Lama and Jeffrey Hopkins, the Dalai Lama states, "Therefore, without depending upon mantra...Buddhahood cannot be attained."
Clearly, there is a reason why such widely divergent sources of wisdom as the Vedas, the New Testament and the Dalai Lama speak of common ideas. Here are some important ideas about mantra which will enable you to begin a practical understanding of what mantra is and what it can do.
We know for a fact that every entity in the universe is composed of energy. Every syllable of a word that is let out by us is a carrier of energy and can be used to tap other specific forms of energy in the atmosphere. Mantras are incantations hailing the Gods thereby stimulating the necessary energy flow. This is mentioned in the following shloka:
Daivadheenam Jagatsarvam Mantradheenamtu Daivatam
Meaning that, the whole universe is ruled by the Devas and the Devas are under the power of Mantras.The deities are also a part of this energy world, Shiva being the supreme source conscious form and Shakti of energy form. Different energy forms called the Panchabhootas include, the ether element, the air, water, fire and the earth element. The existence of these elements in the human body and as well as in the atmosphere facilitates the interaction of energy between them.
Malfunctioning of the body system is caused by disproportionate energy levels in the system. Each organ has its own consciousness, and is capable of emanating and absorbing a certain amount of energy. Impropriety in this process (of radiation and absorption) can lead to abnormal activity of the organ or the organ system and can manifest as a disease.
But the dysfunctional can be healed with the power of Mantras.
The curative power of mantras is not restricted to the domain of physical illness though. It can also be extended to psychological, materialistic and spiritual deficits but it is of paramount importance that all barriers in the patient's mind must be removed to enhance mental receptivity, that the patient must believe that mantras can help him.
MANTRA PRACTICE
Purpose of Meditation
The purpose of meditation is to bring the mind back to the core. Most people are unaware of the true nature of the mind; in its usual state of daily activity, it is likened to an imprisoned mad animal that hops all over its cage and is unaware of the freedom that awaits it outside. The mind is transacting with the external world, responding to the environment and other stimuli, creating a world of its own which is not real. There is no difference between dream and waking state, of self centered reactions to the events of the world. Both states picture the relative reality without getting into the true nature of the mind. The mind is like a mirror; however, we see only the reflections in the mirror and usually do not examine the mirror itself. The changing scenes and the reflections engage our attention and in the process we miss the true nature of the mirror itself. Further, if the mirror is not clear, it will distort the images that we see. Similarly, if the mind is not clear, both our interactions with the world and our health will be compromised. It is truly said that the mind is the maker and it is also the destroyer. It could destroy happiness; on the contrary, if we know its nature, it could destroy our sorrows. The purpose of meditation is to know the nature of the mind itself.
Mantra Meditation
Mantra is that which protects the mind from negative thoughts. Meditation using a mantra is practiced in all spiritual traditions of the world. Mantra protects the mind from its own negativity, its own self-centered vacillation and wandering. When we are emotionally upset or otherwise unsettled, when we want to restrain the mind, then mantra is effective.
Often a mantra is a simple syllable such as OM, HRIM etc, which has an esoteric meaning. Some mantras such as the Guru Mantra are direct supplication to Guru or God who confers us health, peace and wisdom. The mantra should be recited with full dedication and conviction. In other words, it should be chanted with complete focus and faith. This is very important - in other words, if we are chanting a mantra which we have not used before and which we do not feel 'attached' to, it will not be an effective mantra. The mantra should not be repeated mechanically.
A mantra could be repeated aloud, softly or mentally. Of these, the mental repetition is said to be most efficacious. Since mind and the breath are interlinked, it is good to chant the mantra with an awareness of the breath.
Repeating a mantra purifies the psychic atmosphere around us; it clarifies the mind and lets us reach stages of consciousness that are otherwise not discernable. Thus the mantra works at the outer, inner and spiritual level of a person.
Chanting a mantra in a group could be a powerful healing experience. Often, you can feel the penetration of the vibrations into several Chakras of the body. Do not concentrate on the effects it is producing; simply let the body settle into receiving whatever that comes its way. Remember any feeling state that one experiences in the body is still at the material level, so no importance should be attached to such experiences. The wandering mind reaches a state of quiescence, with mantra as the focal point. This is called Dhaarana in yogic texts. An animal is tied to a post to restrain it, going around for a while within the area of its reach and once it has wandered within that circle, it will calm down and rest in one place. Similar is the effect of quieting the mind with repetition of a mantra; first the mind wanders in the perimeter of the mantra and then, slowly moves to the center and settles down to quiet contemplation. Thus we move from Dhaarana to Dhyaana. The final step is Samaadhi. Here the mind becomes clear and we move from the relative to the absolute, from duality to reality. Samaadhi itself is not a single well defined state; there are layers upon layers of levels of consciousness that are penetrated, to reach the unnamed state of oneness with all that is around us.
A sound mind and a sound body are essential on the path to understanding our true nature. These are also necessary for a healthy life. Mantra, working at gross and subtle levels, helps us in rediscovering our primordial condition, a condition beyond duality. Mantra practice is a powerful tool in the overall uplifting of humanity, the human psyche and for protection, in this violent and chaotic age.
