short version: OK state representative kelly kern compared homosexuals to terrorists unfavorably and she thinks there's nothing wrong with that. worse, neither does the OK republican party. long version here.

commentary: some select quotations from the speech representative kern delivered...

rep kern hatemongered:
“the homosexual agenda is destroying this nation; it's just a fact,” kern went on to say in the speech.

“i'm not gay bashing, but according to god's word that is not the right kind of lifestyle,” she said. “it has deadly consequences.”

kern then declared that “studies show that no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted more than a few decades.”

in what way is the so-called “homosexual agenda” destroying this nation? everything has deadly consequences, including overeating--you going on a diet, rep kern? btw, newsflash! if you say something like “i'm not gay bashing, but...”, guess what, you are. and i'd love to know what supposed “studies” have shown that little “fact”.

but here's the real problem: state republican party officials refuse to put condemn, much less put pressure on rep kern, about those statements.

apparently, the republican part of OK is still hoping and praying that james dobson give them his blessing. another newsflash: if he hasn't yet, he isn't gonna, you mealy-mouthed hacks.

Ed- The only "homosexual agenda" I know of is to be extended the rights every other citizen has and to be left alone and accepted. There are many other groups who have fought for pretty much the same thing.

...destroying the nation...lets see...hate speech contributes to that...

Apparently, the velvet mafia's not investing enough money in OK.  Who can blame them, though?  Pick-up trucks, gun racks and pigs riding shotgun is like the Yucatan meteor crash of fashion.  :D

everyone knows how I feel about torture, well people's attitudes and treatment of "gays" are right up there along side of the torture issue with me.  I am an "activist" when it comes to "gays" rights, and you haven't even heard the half of it, Not enough is said or done, if you ask me to protect "gays" from this kind of hate.

Let me tell you, it is downright "hate", and yet we can't get laws that specifically deal with the injustice that I believe is being done towards the gays.   I guess I had better stop there before I end up "preaching a sermon about it".  Thank you ed, for posting this, people need to be aware of the discrimination that is going on.

Teh gayz are recruiting two-year-olds now.  Don't you know?

And that "studies show" crap?  If a student put that in an essay I'd be all over it.  Appeal to false/faulty authority, much?

biglove: happily, i am not beyond words: i'm disgusted.

dee: thank you for adding your voice--as you know, i too am an advocate for gay rights.

eilan: appeals to false authority are generally what anti-gay rhetoric is about. as we all know, it's got nothing to do w/ legitimate authority or logic.

a friend of mine elsewhere pointed me to this exceptional rejoinder to rep. kern.

i wanna know who first decided to try and legislate morality.  If you wanna crash with no seat belt or not wear a helmet or drink under age or be gay or get married to your same sex u should be able to it is a moral and personal decision that the gov has no place to legislate
  • TinSoldier said on Mar 13, 2008....
    I'm okay with the gay.

I don't like equating it to the struggle for racial or gender equality, but still.

The Republican party in the US is all but dead due to financial mismanagement and the national shift towards the Democrats. Hopefully what will rise from the ashes of the unholy social conservative/fiscal conservative marriage will be a renewed Republican party of yore.

But then again, it seems as though all the fiscal conservatives have moved to the Democratic party.

    *sigh*

I guess I'll turn out the lights when I'm the last moderate to leave the party.

"I don't like equating it to the struggle for racial or gender equality, but still."

    Why not?

If the group you were a part of has been regularly harassed and murdered throughout history and denied various things then it is probably every bit as much a struggle that is on par with racial or gender equality.

That silly bitch Kern is a stupid shit. I think they should rip her right out of her closet and send the cast of The L Word to go down on her, and then after she comes, put her on suicide watch.

mr president: hey, welcome to my blog! some of the stuff you lump in w/ legislating morality doesn't seem to be so to me (seatbelt laws). ?

TS: what kelly asked, why not? i'm sure there are fiscal conservatives in the republican party but i'm not at all sure about the small government republicans...

xamount: hi, welcome to my blg page! and i gotta say, i don't think all people suck--but there's a surprising number who do, if you ask me. :>

Sorry, don't feel like going round and round in the "behavior" vs. "genetic" dispute. Let's just say that I agree 90% and leave it at that, 'kay?

Regarding fiscal conservatives vs. small gov't Republicans, I'm not sure about your point. :D

Oregon used to have a pretty strong Republican party which campaigned on many of the issues that the Dems do now. Many of our most "progressive" ideas were put into place by such well-remembered luminaries as Tom McCall, Mark Hatfield, and Vic Atiyeh.

*too long* must get back to work. More later. Let's just say that a lot of good Republicans have left the party of late, they are literally out of money, and they're not even running a candidate for state Attorney General.

  • silverwhisper said on Mar 14, 2008....
TS: yeah, i figured. but you're still wrong... :D

you know, the small govt/fiscal conservatives thing was borne of my being undercaffeinated--my bad.

i'm astonished that oregon had a strong republican party, to be honest--i've always understood the state to be fairly liberal so it appears my understanding was incorrect.

Well silv, i think a seatbelt is a personal choice on wether or not u want to save ur own life. A seatbelt has nothing to do with protecting others. If ur in a crash and not wearing a seatbelt u dont hurt the other driver more than u would if u had ur seat belt on its like forcing people to eat an apple a day to keep the dr. away. Its not the governments business how u protect ur own self. I guess i consider that as them trying to legislate morality. Seatbelts should be a personal moral choice. Maybe im not using the right phrasing...how do u make only plural?
  • Eilan said on Mar 14, 2008....
I'm trying to find a reputable source for this other than GLBT blogs, but I heard that Sally Kern has a gay son.

I see Mr. President's point, I think, though I wouldn't consider helmet and seat belt laws to be legislation of morality. Legisation of safety, perhaps? It's a whole other blog entry.
  • silverwhisper said on Mar 14, 2008....
mr. president: i think that the common thread there in those things is the government saying "we know what's best for you"...does that sound applicable?

eilan: ah, if that's true that would make rep kern a milder form of fred phelps...

As an aside, I think the seatbelt (and helmet) laws get passed because of the burden that uninsured/underinsured hey-it's-MY-life types cause everyone else when they go through the windshield and survive.

"the homosexual agenda is destroying this nation; it's just a fact,”

okay, now i see the error of my ways. at first i thought kern was a silly shit when she said the homosexual agenda is destroying this nation, but it just goes to show that you have to READ CAREFULLY. i neglected to see the second part of that statement "it's just a fact". that changes everything. if it's a fact, well, facts are facts.

“studies show that no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted more than a few decades.”

i once did a study like that. I put my friend nelson on an island with this other guy, robert, and they totally embraced homosexuality there, as they did in america as well. then robert got really bitchy and nelson walked to the other side of the island cause he couldn't take it anymore. that society only lasted about 20 minutes, including the sex.
  • vacantmind said on Mar 15, 2008....

ed...I am as shocked as you are. She should have just said gays were indoctrinating babies in utero and it would have sounded just as intelligent.  I love the way Ellen handled this as well. She cracks me up sometimes.

  • Eilan said on Mar 15, 2008....
States often pass seatbelt and helmet laws because they have to if they want to get federal highway dollars.  That's why the legal BAC limit is becoming .08 in so many states.

I forgot about this.  No, it's not the insurance companies.  It's the state.  Who picks up the tab for all those "rugged individualists" who brain themselves while they don't have insurance?  That's right, it's you and me.

I can't believe they aren't trying to fix what she said!  That's terrible!  I think every one has the right to love, and who are we to say that you can't love someone the same gender as yourself?  Gay, lesbian, straight, we're all people and should have the same rights.  So maybe "marriage" is mandated as a union between man and woman, give them a civil ceremony that allows them the same rights as a married couple.  It's the same thing.  I don't see how this woman gets away with equating homosexuality with terrorism.
