I don't mind Americans. In fact, I quite like some of them. The problem I seem to have is with the parents of American children in general.

I was chatting to someone from America, who happened to mention a line similar to this in one of my conversations. 'I'm so glad I'm in America, where my son can get a good education.' Now, okay, if we are talking from the perspective of US or Rwanda, I can garuntee the US comes out in front. But in all of the First-World countries. US is hardly at the forefront of anything in that department.

I can close my eyes, I can picture the globe, I can name all of the continents, and most of the oceans, And then I can go down to naming countries, and in some cases even states and capitals of a variety of countries. I'd like to mention that Geography is my poor subject. Of all my subject matter, it's most definetly my weakness. I'd also like to note I've never done University, or any further studies outside of High School.

But when studies, numerous ones, show that just under 50% of all american high school students can't point out the states of New York or Ohio. I'm not even from America, I don't envisage ever travelling to America, and I can freakin well do that. over 75% couldn't identify roughly where things such as Iraq and Iran and Israel were, but that's not massively suprising. That's something I don't expect - but some of their own states? Especially New York which is, I would imagine, pretty well known. And Ohio, which is easy to spot because of the shape of its border, at least it is for me.

So okay, maybe America is full of Isolationists, I don't really give a rats. So lets jump ahead a few problems, shall we? Sex Ed. Now I understand Sex Ed is a touchy subject, but fer cryin out loud, get real! America has been trying to teach Abstinence - Fat lot of good that's going to do. Lets teach our students abstinence, and bury our heads in the sand like the rest of it doesn't exist....yeah...that's going to work...not.

And it doesn't. Every four years in the US the rate of common STD's increases in the 14-19 year old population by a staggering 2%. now that might not seem like much, but when this year it's sitting at 28% of that entire age group having one of the most common STD's, it's a bit of a joke, and OBVIOUSLY abstinence is not the way to teach your students the way to safer sex. OBVIOUSLY it is doing absolute jack shit and nothing. So do something about it, actually teach kids about protection, give out free packs of condoms, bring out that hey, if you have to have sex, don't gamble, wear a fucking condom for fucks sake.

Now this is honestly a bit rich coming from me. I prefer not to use a condom, in fact I hate them. But then again I don't go around fucking anything with 2 legs and a heartbeat either.

So would those two reasons alone be enough to show a 'patriotic american' how bad their own education system is? Not a chance. If you've ever tried showing an American whom is patriotic anything bad about their own country, they just flat out deny it, or my personal favorite 'don't believe everything you read on the net' now of course I don't, but when I retort with 'sure, but don't believe everything you see on the news' I get a laugh back. I mean seriously people, how dumb can you get.

Lets look at some other things. A student with their highest level of high school completed can't get a job here in Australia where a requirement of such a job would be a Higher School Certificate, why? Because we know American education is a joke. When those students who have completed high school come over here and attempt to get their HSC, even with 6 months of prep time, 98% fail it on their first time.

Let me just mention - Australian history is not a requirement in HSC, Geography, yet again, not a requirement. All that is required is English Maths and basic Science. Now, we don't 'mark down' for 'Americanisms' if you write mom instead of mum, we know what you mean. If you write 'pop' or 'soda' we generally know you mean a carbonated beverage of some sort.

Yet Australia is not the strictest either in terms of education.

Over here we have a comedian whom one of his favorite lines is 'grow the fuck up Australia'

Grow the fuck up America.

*Author wishes to note that he doesn't think all Americans are intellectually retarded, merely 98 percent of them - And since at least half of those can't access a computer for whatever reason, let alone get this far in this blog - he understands that probably 50% of the people who get this far are not intellectually retarded, congratulations*

That's why my mommy home schooled me and I was out of high school around the age of 16 already at a college freshman level. Not all schools are bad though, you usually just have to pay out of the ass for them. I would typically argue though that it's not the education system failing the kids, it's the kids failing themselves. If no importance is put on grades and school in home life, most kids are not really going to give much mind to it. If you push your kids they will be able to take full advantage of the education system and make it work for them instead of the other way around. The US just doesn't seem to value the importance of education.

I one hundred percent agree, which is why my rant is generally aimed towards the parents of American children who seem to believe that whatever is taught in their school of choice needs to be all the child learns, and home time is home time.

    Which sickens me.

I was never 'home schooled' though my mother *due to having me at the age of 16* went back to school when I was about 13, and the maths she was doing I used to enjoy doing also, personal thing there, I imagine.

It still worries me when I get the odd news article like 'Child completes high-school having only a 3rd year level of english skill' and the article going on to state that the school basically is run as a 'as long as the parents don't have a problem, we don't give a shit'

Being from America - California specifically, i have to agree with everything you said.  In our early years of school we were taught geography and current events, then in high school (in the 70's for me) we were taught about self expression and in many cases free love, and how to relax to have an orgasm; since my teacher were mostly young hippies.  They smoked pot with us and taught us to question authority.
I took ceramics, photography, interpersonal communications, and illustration my senior year.  Two of my classes allowed my to leave campus so, i hung out at the beach most of the day.  I however learned nothing of history, modern geography, foreign language, advanced mathematics, humanities, or politics I feel inadequate about those subjects.  I've gone back to school and received my bachelors degree but, even still our culture doesn't incourage intelligence.  Between the overzealous religious fanatics and the blind patriots its almost impossible to have an intelligent conversation about anything.  Reading the news is infuriating. Watching the news on television is a complete joke.  Its so much easier to be apathetic.
Just trying to keep up with the demands of my jobs, pay my bills, and find some entertainment to enjoy life before it stresses me out completely seems overwhelming.  So, I pop in and out of being informed.  I pop in and out about being responsible to the environment, the citizens of the planet, and everything else I care about as a human.  Its feels like such a pointless battle from here in America where money has become the only thing with a real voice.
but that's just my uneducated opinion
