Curmudgeon--What summer driving season? I'm parking my car for the summer and walking everywhere.
  • polarheart said on Mar 11, 2008....

Ok, I first had to go and find out how many liters are in a gallon:

    1 gallon [US, liquid] = 3.785 411 784 liter

Now for the big shocker: We pay £1 and 5pence on average PER LITRE, so a gallon would be around £3.97

    Which in dollars is:

    3.97 British pounds = 7.993198 U.S. dollars

Its quite a lot aint it?

  • Zayda said on Mar 11, 2008....
    Yeah, Polar it is.

I've known for awhile that gas prices elsewhere are much steeper than they are here in the States.

But, when you can remember $2.00 a gallon prices, the over $3.00 a gallon prices are a shocker. And they say that our gas will be over $4.00 a gallon before summer.
  • quietone said on Mar 11, 2008....
Ours just went up to $3.19.   This is never going to end  :(     My daughter just had to pay $500 for 125 gallons of fuel oil.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Mar 11, 2008....
It flucuates wildly here.  A block from my apartment this morning it was $3.43, but at the corner from where I work it's about $3.87.  I've seen it over $4 at gas stations right off the major highways.  I would guess it will get well over $4.50 by summer.
  • the_infernal_optimist said on Mar 11, 2008....
It was between $3.13 and $3.19 around here yesterday. If there's been a huge leap, I haven't been out of the house to see it today.

It's just sick - when I was in college, there was a brief time period when it hovered right around $1. And now...well, let's just say somebody's pockets are being lined and it's not me! We're traveling significantly less to visit people. It hurts enough to fill up a few times/month, and we have a car that gets 28mpg in the city.

  • nytquill17 said on Mar 11, 2008....
Last time we filled up, it was $1.18 per liter, or about $4.47 per gallon.

Do you guys remember the summer right before prices started shooting up, when gas was under a dollar a gallon in some places?
  • the_infernal_optimist said on Mar 11, 2008....

Quiet: You're right; I don't think this is ever going to end. At the rate prices are going up, I may have to find a new job so that I don't have to bear the expense of the commute. Or we are going to have to move closer to my job and my husband's job.

Infernal: We don't really go visit much of anyone now either. I would love to visit my parents or they would love to come visit us, but we just aren't willing to make the 10 hour drive because of gas prices. Although, that would still be cheaper on us than flying three people to visit them.

Nyt: Yeah, we didn't know just how good we had it when prices were right around the $1.00/gallon mark. Hell, I'd be happy if they would get back to the $2.00/gallon mark right now.

I remember back in the early 70s when they were having the "gas wars" I lived in Va. Beach.. gas was between 29 cents and 49 cents a gallon!  We had a fit when it hit over a dollar... what is one to do!  supply and demand.. always about money!
  • GrapeKoolaid said on Mar 11, 2008....
Yup...  I remember when I first went away to college, the gas station in the small, college town was charging 99cents/gal.  In front of my house, is a gas station that's charging $3.49/gal right now.

Just another week or so, and I'll be able to get my bike out...  Then, I'll drive around with a full tank at under $10, get about 70 miles/gal, and laugh at the fools driving around in their SUVs at 7 miles/gal.

Of course, when it's raining out, they'll be laughing at me...  That seems fair enough.  :D

Yesterday I filled up my car with gas that cost almost exactly ten times what I paid to fuel my first car in 1973. A 16-gallon fill-up at $3.29 cost almost $53. At this price, it would be almost as expensive to drive from Chicago to New England as it would be to fly on a commercial carrier at the best available fare.
  • Eilan said on Mar 11, 2008....
I haven't been out of the house today, but yesterday, gas was $3.25 here.

It costs around $60 to fill up the mom-wagon and $30 to fill up our smaller car.  Unless we have to take the entire family somewhere, we drive the smaller car, since it gets 27-30 mpg.
  • CreativeWoman said on Mar 11, 2008....
It is $3.05 here today.  It makes me very thankful that I have a fairly fuel efficient car.  However, it's going to cost a fortune to run the tractors during hay season this year.  I think diesel is already up to $3.57 a gallon.  It always goes even higher as soon as planting season starts, which will be soon.

Just this morning gas in my neck of the woods went up eight cents, from $3.09 to $3.17. Being self-employed, I do alot of driving  and gas prices are killing me.

  • Zayda said on Mar 11, 2008....
CW: Diesel is $3.97 a gallon here. I don't know how all the farmers here are going to handle the prices once planting season starts and once it's times to harvest.

Eilan: It costs about $55.00 for me to fill up my small SUV, which for an SUV gets good gas mileage at 26 highway. The hubby's new car gets about 29/30 highway, which is good given his commute. But, this summer we are considering moving closer to both his work and mine to help not only reduce our fuel budget but to also cut down on his commute time (mine's not so bad).

LJ:  It would still cost more to fly the three of us to Virginia than it would to drive the trip, but the gas prices are probably going to curtail any trips for us any time soon.  I would say with the cost in fuel, airline ticket prices, like everything else, will likely go up again soon as well.

our gas is about $3.29 a gallon...in the cheapest places.  My grandmother has a picture that took place in about the late 1960's and it said that gas was 25cent a gallon. which i think is amazing..but i remember when gas was like $1.89 a gallon..its crazy and i'm not that old eather. just think about how much gas will be when our kids get older. its insaine!
  • Eilan said on Mar 11, 2008....
Zayda, my husband was out earlier today and he says the gas prices are still in the $3.20's here.  We tend to have our increases on Thursdays and Fridays, when most people get paid.

Our mom-wagon is one of those so-called crossover vehicles.  I think it's officially classified as a midsize SUV, but it's part-SUV (because it has AWD), part minivan, and part station wagon.  It gets 24 mpg on the highway.

We have a truck as well.  It has two gas tanks and it's expensive to fill up, but we drive it only once a month, if that.
  • Zayda said on Mar 11, 2008....
Well, I suppose it's good news that ours was up to $3.43 this morning and now this afternoon it's down to $3.28. That's still high, but at least it's not in the $3.40 range. Thank goodness I filled up last Friday when it was $3.09. (Okay, just saying thank goodness to $3.09/gallon prices makes me cringe.)

Darkdragon: Welcome to my blog. My grandfather used to own a gas station when I was much, much younger, and I can remember prices being under a dollar. I don't know that I remember it being $0.25/gallon but there may even be pictures of him at his station when gas was that low. Ahhh...those were the days.

I think the average around here is about $3.41/gal. We have a local Chevron station that is almost routinely the cheapest (even cheaper than some off brands) that I think is about $3.29/gal.

I own both of my cars because they are older. My daily driver gets about 27-28 mpg in the summer, less in the winter due to the ethanol added to the gas. My other car gets about 19 city/28 highway. While I love the car, that's why I don't drive it any more.

I don't really have the option to move closer to work, but I could ride my bike. It's only about 8-10 miles. It just takes so darn long!

My company used to offer free transit passes -- I would still have to ride or walk a couple of miles -- but they stopped doing that due to cost cutting.

Sorry USA cousins!.... I got outa bed on the wrong side this morning an here comes a mega rant!!!  Today the Aussie dollar is worth 92.88 cents US.....at the moment we are not too far off dollar for dollar...are we. GAS /PETROL PRICES!! ....in Perth WA we are currently paying $6.52  a gallon and foe Easter we are told to expect $7.50 a gallon! And Caltex is saying that, not yet a while but Aussies will be paying $13.50 a gallon in the not too distant future!

92.88 cents to to dollar - go figure cousins!!

Why is the USA so afflicted with tunnel vision?why can't you see beyond your own borders? Do you think you have a God given right to cheap fuel and that you think the rest of the world should subsidize that? Silverwhisper says it was 88 cents a gallon 10 years ago!!! In 1976 - thats 32 years ago....I was paying $1.36 a gallon, though to be honest I don't know what the exchange rate was then, but one thing is for sure,we were paying more than you!

Come on! can you blame me for being upset when your gas prices are about half of mine??
  • silverwhisper said on Mar 11, 2008....
rupe, for how long have you been paying around that much for petrol? the reason i specifically noted that price from 10 years ago is b/c i'm actually quite aware that people in oz and europe pay considerably more for their petrol than we do in the US.

consider, then: the price of gas in the US has more than trebled in 10 years. can you say the same?

    ed
  • rupert7 said on Mar 11, 2008....
Silver, I dunno mate, but when I got my license in 1968 I was paying about half what you were paying 10 years ago. We have been paying $5.00 plus a gallon for some time.  One thing I have to say - and this really annoys we, is that fuel tax is incredibly high! In fact if it were removed (pigs will fly first!) petrol/gas would be 60% cheaper!! That would bring it back to 'round $2.60 a gallon. So the government is the main culprit it seems!!  Out of curiosity...is there a tax on fuel in the states...I really don't know!
  • travelr712 said on Mar 11, 2008....
hmm, i'm curious rupert as to what your income and property tax rates are, and tax rates on other purchased goods. that might be the way your government is making up for lower taxes in other areas.
  • silverwhisper said on Mar 11, 2008....
rupe: see, in the states the taxes are considerably less than they are elsewhere. for almost as long as i've been online (10 years), i've been aware of just how dirt-cheap our gasoline is compared to what citizens of other nations pay b/c i've known brits and swedes and other aussies.

for my honeymoon, my wife & i visited her family in italy (she has an ex-patriate aunt there). when they drove us back from the airport, they filled the tank of their car--which at that time cost i think US $5/gallon or so. i was scandalized by that, as you might imagine, until her aunt noticed my shock and explained that the taxes are much higher.

there are some taxes on petrol in the states, but i do think the real source of the vastly different prices we both see are a function of that. well, that and the fact that the US does use a whole lotta oil so i would think there's something of a volume discount.

Hi, in Israel it is always ridiculously expensive, we pay by the liter so its about $1.70 a liter so it comes out about $6.33 a gallon.
  • rupert7 said on Mar 11, 2008....
Well..its true the population of the States is greater than 10 times that of Australia, I think he are on about 22 million at the moment. Revenue from income tax alone in the States would have to be much greater than here,so I suppose that would help keep fuel taxes down. Here in Western Australia, the prices are "locked" by law for 24 hours from 6.00am each day. The oil companies have this strange "price cycle" arrangement. On certain days of the week fuel is up to a dollar a gallon dearer than on other days! Why...Oh...its the price cycle!!!! On public holidays and long weekends, you just watch the price shoot up! Often here in Australia, when the price of oil drops....the price of petrol just keeps going up anyway!!  Its true,,Caltex, and i guess the others will follow, has said that in the future,we will be paying $13.50 a gallon. I don't know how far off that is but its not something to look forward too!

BTW. cheapest petrol price in my local area today is $6.26 a gallon.

I have this program called "motor mouth," it keeps me informed!
  • silverwhisper said on Mar 11, 2008....
rupe: on certain highways in the US, the fuel stations are required to keep the same price through the course of the week, so that whatever price they have monday they're obliged to maintain through friday, which sounds slightly similar to the price lock you mention. i don't pretend to understand how they take the price of oil and work out the price at the pump--sometimes, the two definitely seem completely unrelated, i agree!

  • rupert7 said on Mar 11, 2008....

  • tyofcore said on Apr 22, 2008....
I believe the rising cost of gas is due to the fact that the minimum wages are to be increased in the coming years, with that in mind the government is trying to validate their reasoning by saying that war is the reason that the price is so high. Simple thought as follows: If gas prices were to drop, basic living expenses would drop, then the cost of living would go down, and with this happening people would be able to crawl out of debt, now the credit company's that thrive off interest would decrease profits and would cause a backlash that would make the economy thrive. If you think that the oil company's profits aren't sky-rocketing then your as blind as they come. Profit is nice when your living above means, but for us average joes this is a disturbing issue. If the gas and oil company's wanna be able to justify the high cost, then they should be held accountable for this and should be forced by law to transfer a majority of their profits to schools, hospitals, and medical research. So higher gas prices, higher cost of living and pay check to pay check needs to be addressed and not discarded. I was told a story from a gentleman in his mid 60's one day, and he was telling me about what had happened to the mass transit system that was forced out of commission by one of the big 3 auto makers, and big oil, at one time across the country most major cities all ran on electric trolley cars, this was not a good thing for the auto maker, and big oil, electric which is a clean resource, would not make money for these company's. Votes were made and all the electric trolleys were taken down and bus's were put into place, thus creating profit for the auto maker and big oil. Now why would the country remove a clean source of transit, that now a days is a huge thing with "global warming" for a fossil fuel type? Makes no sense to me, but this happened, and now a days mass pollution is killing the environment. Thanks big oil. I'm not a member of any kind of eco friendly groups, just a guy who's tired of high prices of everything.
  • travelr712 said on Apr 22, 2008....
electricity is generated from fossil fuels ty. and like the oil execs told congress 2 weeks ago, if congress levies a windfall prophit tax on them, they'll pass that along to the consumers and the prices will go up, so we can pay their taxes for them and they can still make their huge prophits.

ty, the price of gas has nothing to do with government. on the contrary, it's a function of speculation in the oil market, part of the stock market. b/c the US economy is in a recession, investors are seeking commodities: precious metals and yes, oil. this interest drives up the per barrel prices, and as the economy continue to stink, more and more investors will head into that commodity.

All this was forseen in the 1960's at least, (The Whole Earth Catalogue had lots of alternative projects) and there is no need to use food for energy, as in bio-fuels, there are millions of people on the verge of starvation right now.

Things can be done on the personal and neighborhood levels, there are plans out there for manually operated generators that connect to batteries:We can get healthy with an exercise bicycle and light our houses at the same time. We can use the new electric cars for commuting, we can put windmills on our roofs etc for more free electric power. The more people who do this, the more it is seen and accepted and can someday become the 'default' energy source.

Gas cost me today what I had to fork out to fill my own vehicle so my hubby could drive it to work while I sat at home.......

He was pleased that I had the foresight to put it in for him, and I was glad that it was less than I had to pay last Friday.

This is a fat person taking up a fat seat on the plane. A fat seat on the bus. A fat seat on the train. Should we pay for individual transportation by the pound?
