Hello.  My name is Grace, and I'm a gamer.  For some time I've been an avid MMORPG addict.  I've been playing for about 15 years now.  It began with Everquest, back in the day.  Before I moved last November I had been playing World of Warcraft for several months, having grown tired of Dark Age of Camelot.  I saw Zayda's post that had You Tube commercials for the game and decided that I should start playing again.   I downloaded the free trial and then decided that . . . yes . . . I still like the game and it's worth paying for.

Today I upgraded my account with the proper codes but found out the files were not complete, so I went to the website and started downloading the entire set of files (since my disk doesn't seem to be working.)

All day at work I kept thinking . . . "Yes!  When I get home I can play some W.O.W.  That will be fun.  I need some FUN!!!"

When I got home Trav told me that Little man, who LOVES to play on my computer, just - of his own accord - reached over and turned off my computer.  {{ Can you hear the HUGE sigh? }}  I am writing this post because I'm waiting on the download . . . again . . . because it was only about 70% done when my little man decided he'd "help."  It's got two more hours to go.

Little Man - I have a message for you.

I know how smart you are.  I know how wonderful it is to play on Mom's computer.  I know you have your own folder with all the places you can visit and play . . . ***when you have permission to do so****.  I know that playing on the computer makes you feel grown up.  I know the things you get to do on the computer you don't get to do somewhere else.  I love you more than breath.

B U T

Son . . . keep your mitts off my computer.   {{{   MOM  GLARE   }}}

I don't mind sharing my computer.

Ok.  I lied.  I hate sharing my computer.  It's MY computer.  As much as I am willing to share almost everything, my computer is not one of them I will just hand over.  I'm posessive about it.  Why is that?  Use my hairbrush - fine.  My razor - no problem.  Play in or use up my favorite lotion or good shampoo - I can get more, have fun.  You can even have the last of the cranberry relish on the last bagel - it's OK!  But, keep your mitts off my computer!!

Am I alone in this posessive behavior?

Oh no....I fed your habit by posting the commercials!?!?!

I'm kind of possessive about my computer. Luckily, I have both a desktop and a laptop, so I can let the little man play around on the laptop when I need my desktop and my husband needs his desktop.

he got a 10 minute time out in his bed and an 'mom's gonna be mad'' speach 10 times when i caught what he was doing, and he really wasn't doing anything bad, he just couldn't resist. sorry grace, i tried my best.

if he has access to a laptop, why would he need to be on anything else?
  • MissMimi said on Mar 09, 2008....
Technically, the laptop I'm using is supposed to be 'ours', but really, it's mine.  I know it's mine, it knows it's mine, and we like it that way.  mrMimi better keep his grubby mitts off of it, or life will become very unpleasant very quickly.

God help him if he ever decides he wants to use it to keep track of his fantasy football leagues.  He'll have to pry it out of my cold dead little hands.

Zayda - Don't blame yourself.  Any excuse will do, for an addict. =)

Trav - I'm thinking he was trying to help.  He's used to my computer being off when I'm gone.

    Crybabylu - Huh? I'm confused.

MissMimi - LOL.  That's pretty much how I feel too.  I'm happy to work WITH little man to use my computer, but I'm done with him using it without me being right there. While he's a very obedient child, the bottom line is . . . it's my computer.  My purse, my coffee, and my computer - they're mine.  Leave um alone!  ;~P

    aw, thats funny...just a little?
I feel your pain, soul sister. Here is the mamie house deal (still laughing at mrmimi trying to pry the laptop from mimi.....hehe). We had two desk tops. They became obsolete. We bought daughter a desk top and ourselves a lap top. Daughter blew up hers. We are not replacing hers just yet because her new college requires a certain computer, etc. so it is expensive and her graduation gift.

Which leaves MY laptop. For three wired people. She for: AIM, facebook, iTunes....He for fantasy crap, games, stocks, work uplinks, etc. As for me, well I guess we see who has it and where they are??

Stay away from my computer people! There will be consequences!! :))

Anyone can use my computer Gracie, but not without me looking over their shoulder haha.......cute story.

I don't want anyone touching my computers.

I have a laptop for internet surfing and entertainment. Then I have a work computer that has a lot of expensive software and devices hooked up to it. All of that is off limits.

But we have a family PC that my daughter uses to visit places like Barbie.com and Tamagotchi Town. She's always pushing the wrong keys and locking the thing up. And my wife is always downloading games that are filled with spyware onto her own laptop.

It's no wonder I won't let them touch my stuff.

I've had my own computer since I started college (the same computer, acutally...though I've upgraded a few components).  We don't mess with each other's computer stuff unless asked.  We never sat down and spelled it out like that, we just mutually gravitated towards leaving each other's computer alone since we each had our own right from the start.

We have a laptop, too, that we both use about equally - which is almost never!  So I don't consider that a shared computer, really.  It's more like a spare.  We used it more when we were playing FFXI to look up information while playing, since you can't alt-tab or run the game in windowed mode.  Now we use it mostly when we go on vacation to dump the camera or charge an iPod or something.

I'm very particular about how my stuff is organized.  Plus I'm a serious creature of habit and control freak.  I could adapt to sharing a computer; I've done it before and I could do it again I suppose.  But I wouldn't like it.  And I couldn't share my current computer - it is MINE and I would have a total hissy fit if anyone were to, say, move an icon. :p

    Ouch, sensitive topic....lol....

Unfortunately, i have to share my comp with my daughter. So you can imagine the condition of my keyboard when she drinks and eats at the desk.....plus, chewing gums are left on the side of the screen, pens are left chewed up like granola bars...i have to double vacuum the carpet underneath the desk because she leaves crumbs of any kind....

But the most annoying things is that i have to close any single window i might be working with anytime i leave the computer.... I dont want to risk her reading my personal stuff. Its a pain in the neck. Specially when i am in chat and it happens i have to leave the room and she wanders around....i have to close everything.......

Its a pain in the neck. Plus, like Boxy said, sometimes shepunches too many keys or opens too many sites and freezes everything....awwghh.

So, yes, i am uttelry possessive of my computer-babay!....

Grace: LOL. :) So, what class do you play?

I'm telling you if we didn't have a laptop, I would probably have to beat the little man off my computer or my husband's with a stick. :)

Not in the slightest are you alone.

I agree completely with you.  My computer is...bluntly...!!!*MY*!!! computer.  I have my stuff on it, my folders and files, my notes and blogs and proggies and journals and...well... MY WHOLE *^(&% life is there.  If someone were to mess with that, they'd be putting YEARS of what I've done at risk.  Oh, sure, I can recover it, and yes I do keep PGP encrypted back-up disks.  But that isnt the point, is it?  The point is DON'T MESS WITH IT.  My ability to recover from your mistakes is NOT a sufficient excuse for you to mess around with it.

then again, I'm a gamer too, so... maybe the attitude is applicable to MMORPG types???

I agree with you Grace and it looks like alot of people here feel the same way about their computers I know I do:)

Gracie - My 2 nieces come here often and use the computer for various things and I have no problem with that. They both use computers all day at work, and probably know more about them than i do! The only thing is that both of them can "hog it" for hours! Out friends little niece, Chelsea, visits here often, and last time she asked if I have any gamed on the computer. I could truthfully answer, NO! she then replied that "you can play games on the internet." She is 7 years old,I am wondering what the future holds for my beloved "puter"?

I have mine all to myself.. one of the privileges of living alone! But, when my grandson spends the night, this is one of his favorite things to do..... "grammy, can I use your laptop?  Can I go to nick.com?  Please?"  oh did I say "please?"  Okay, but only for an hour, and don't touch anything else!!  yes, possesive!

Yep.  Very possessive here.  And by the way, keep your grubby fingers off my screen.
