As I was running the dishwater, I looked over at the pile on the counter and saw my coffee cup sitting there. I reminded myself, as I always do, not to put it in to soak, because water seeps in and then later seeps out all over the coffee table. So I started thinking, 'why don't I just get another cup'? That thought did not appeal to me in the slightest, and I wondered why. I think I've answered the coffee cup question for myself. It's because it takes me awhile to wake up in the morning, so I have a routine set so I don't forget anything. Part of that routine involves my cup. It's just the right size, so that there is not too much or too little. I know just how much cream and sugar to put in that cup to make it exactly the right taste, without thinking about it. I'm habitual in some areas, and if my coffee isn't the right taste or right amount, it somehow throws my day off. So for me, to change cups would be like changing pillows, it would take me a week to get used to and comfortable with a new one, and I just don't want to go through that hassle unless I absolutely have to.

So, that got me thinking. How many people have just one cup that they drink from, and how many use whichever cup is handy?

    Usually whichever is handy...

But I have two plastic insulated travel mugs that I use on workdays. I usually take whichever one is clean, or just rinse one out if neither are.

I have become attached to other coffee cups in the past, though. But either the attraction wears off or the cup leaves me.

Don't you dare buy a coffee cup!  Mr. P brings home bazillions of them.
All political!  I'll mail you 3 bazillion!

I have about ten different travel mug cups. I don't use a regular coffee cup because I'd have to keep filling it a million times. I drink a lot of coffee! But I don't really have a favorite one. There is one I don't like as much, but I'll use it in a pinch. Otherwise, I'm not that picky about the cup.

But I am picky about the flavor of the coffee. It has to be perfectly made, with just the right amount of sugar of cream. Otherwise I can't drink it and it puts me in a bad mood :-P So THAT I can relate to!

I have about 5 travel mugs only one of which is my favorite. The hubby and I "tussle" over it actually. I really should replace all the others with ones like our favorite one.

When I'm at home and making coffee, I do have two favorite mugs. I actually wrote a blog about one of them because I was talking pictures and captured steam when taking one of them. So I kept trying to get more shots of steam. Then I posted them here on SC.

I have a pink travel mug I like the best. It's sleek and shiny and it makes me happy to drink out of it! But I can handle it if it's clean. I'll use a different one. But I think the coffee tastes better in the pink one.....LOL

I have two mugs that I use for coffee and two that I use for tea; I can't put tea in the coffee mugs, or vice versa, because that would disrupt the order of the universe.  The coffee mugs have my husband's former employer's logo on them.  The tea mugs are just tan mugs from Wal-Mart.

I have 2 favorite mugs that I drink from at home...it only matters at home...my first and favorite mug I got from a trip to M & M world in New York.  It's a giant green mug with a picture of a green lady M&M on it...totally me.....the other mug is a back-up in case my lady M&M is dirty (hee hee) this mug has tigger on it and I only like it because it is a giant mug.  I have a thing for giant mugs and cups.

Funny how we get ourselves into routines....creatures of habit.  I really only enjoy coffee at home, I don't like to drink it anywhere else, because no one can make it like i do.  lol....I hate when I get disapointed about the taste!  Crazy....

eilan - you're exactly right! coffee cups are for coffee, tea cups are for tea! don't screw with the universe!

minnie - so all of you cartoon characters do hang out together! LOL
yes, we're creatures of habit. i think it's cause we breathe in and out regularly, and our heart beats regularly, and it builds from there :-)

Our good friend and neighbor died a few years back. Our kids played together
and went to the same school, same grade. She got cancer, fought it for several
years, and then died. She gave us a couple of cups she got when she lived in
another state. One has since broken. I drink from the remaining cup most every
morning. It is just the right size. That is also my way of remembering her each
day. I also drink my evening and weekend coffee from various cups given to me
by my family, which reminds me that they love me.

Mr Rants and I use glass tea cups...mugs, actually. I took a picture of them but I have no idea how to post it here.  It's a nice picture...too bad no one can see it.

Nope!  can't use just any 'ol cup, gotta use my grandma one! One that has my grandkids pictures on it....they made it for me one year for mother's day....

I have a salmon colored mug and a green mug that I usually use for coffee.  Like you, I find that I've gotten used to putting just the right amounts of flavoring into them.  I do it without thinking, which is a good thing because the mind isn't always clear before that first cup of joe.  :-)

twirleypants - you have to go and upload it to flicker, and then use the flicker button to paste the link in a comment. there's no way to directly upload a picture to the soulcast website. try it, i'd like to see the pics.

cry - well, of course! a hand made mother's day cup MUST be the only cup that can be used! it would just upset the entire realm of motherhood if you didn't!

cw - heya, i haven't heard from you in awhile, nice to see you :-)
and mine either, i guess i just don't want to put what little brain power i have when i first get up into coffee.
  • quietone said on Mar 09, 2008....
I have no particular one either.  seems funny that more often than not, in my travels I will buy a souvenier mug and then not ever use it.  I don't like the travel mugs much, but I don't drink a lot of coffee any more either.  I can say I do not like drinking out of hard plastic cups for anything.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Mar 09, 2008....
We have these mugs my sis-in-law bought us a few years ago.  They're big so you don't have to keep refilling.  I also have a couple of mugs my daughter bought me that I use now and then. (especially when she's here)

At work I tend to use disposable.  The kitchen is not real close to my desk and I hate not at least rinsing out mugs when I'm done.  I don't use travel mugs as I've never found one that doesn't find a way to spill onto my clothes when I drink.
  • travelr712 said on Mar 09, 2008....
i've done that before too quiet, bought a travel mug when i was on the road and then never used it again. i'm actually more fond of porcelin cups than plastic, but when i moved into this apartment, i bought myself one of those 'one cup' coffee makers, and that's the cup that came with it, so i thought it was the cup i had to use. now i'm used to it, so i don't want to give it up!

unique - maybe one with a lid would solve that problem? just a suggestion.

trav- I have a shelf in the cabinet that is so full I have to stack to get them in. We have Christmas cups, dog cups, humane society cups and plain cups. They are all about the same size, (actually they are mugs), and I have no idea why I have a few favorites that change often. Still haven't figured that out.

My wife doesn't care at all so long as its clean and has coffee in it.
  • travelr712 said on Mar 09, 2008....
that's interesting beyond, and seems somewhat unique to me for some reason.

i have a series of cups that are "my favorites".  each one has a special significance to me.  Each has a story to it: how or where I got it, what happened to me while I was drinking from it, who gave it to me, etc...  and depending on my mood and thoughts for the day (where I'm going and what I'm doing) I choose a cup as a kind of memento to put me/keep me in the desired frame of mind.

My favorite cup is from my son that says "I (heart) Mom."  I like my "birds" cup, too.  But I usually grab this old one I have right now--just a plain old cup that says "coffee" all over it.  Why?  because it's light weight!

The travel mugs I've tried have ALL had lids.  I think the problem is that I try to get a big enough gulp and inevitably it backfires.  Since I only have a 20 minute communte I just suffer the lack of coffee.
  • travelr712 said on Mar 10, 2008....
fallen - that's interesting, sort of a sentimental history in your coffee cups. i like that.
