There has been a lot of talk about the SoulCast "Popular Members" list lately.
Some of it coherent, some not. I too have wondered and speculated why I
am on that list and why others are on it. I always figured it was a function of
the amount of time each person was signed-on to SoulCast every day.

Being a mathematician, I thought I would look at some of the numbers to see
if there was any clue there. Here is what I found number-wise:

                                                                                 # of blog
                                   reads read by pages
silverweenie 662 712 = 1374 65
Creativewoman 266 531 = 797 42
secretlife 174 501 = 675 21
Zayda 331 468 = 799 35
gingersoul 321 295 = 416 17
JadeLondon 296 283 = 579 1
hunter_boyce_chandler 418 279 = 697 5
moonriver 617 256 = 873 14
MissMimi 240 238 = 478 22
ALIENated 9 234 = 243 12
GrapeKoolaid 202 230 = 432 17
TheNuttyNakedProfessor 33 228 = 261 2
destinydiva 234 224 = 458 1
allaroundgirl 193 207 = 400 14
...
hottips4u 43 28 = 71 2

As I said, the numbers do not lie. It is obvious from these numbers that:

1. Some of the most popular people have more subscribers than people to
which they subscribe. Such as myself. But, in fairness, I deleted damn
near everything--posts and subscriptions--not long ago, which would
significantly up my posts and subscriptions if I had not.

2. Some of the most popular people subscribe to more people than
    subscribe to them.

3. The number of pages of posts (number of posts may vary, I just recorded
number of pages) tells us ... not much, except that silverweenie has a
lot of time on his hands (I should talk, after all I recorded all these
    numbers).

4. The order of the Most Popular list is actually in the order of the bloggers
who have the most readers. Hmmm

and the most important finding of this post ...

5. Lining up numbers in this font is really, really hard.

Thanks to all my subscribers. I know many are reading my drivel even though
they do not subscribe to me. Thanks to you to, but you have to admit, you
are learning a lot.

I only recorded the people who show up on the main page under the
Most Popular list. And, of course, hottips4u, because she is so interested
in this subject.

What are your numbers? Do you deserve to be higher up the list?

I deserve to be higher on the list!  And I'm not that far down I'm high on the second page of popular and I hardly subscribe to anybody.  Neither does bloc.
  • mobil said on Mar 08, 2008....
What......are you and bloc in love with each other? Tell me it ain't so.

This is all bullshit Joe, that baby soft kid evil twin, he went right to the top and so did Destiny. Shit those two were on top so much I got sick of looking at them, They were the most popular though. Yet to a new comer edwardo looks popular when in reality, no one here even likes him. He's boring, spent his entire adult life on a computer.

Yet Silverjerkoff remains at the top, why, because he speed reads and is always fishing in the back of SC trolling actually for subscribers. How can anyone read 612 blogs. This asshole doesn't even clean up his reading list !

So, get back in there and figure out a way to make me the most popular person ever, evvvvvvver, ok?

  • hottips4u said on Mar 08, 2008....
I gotta say Mobil, that was a mouth full. ; )

    jessi.
  • mobil said on Mar 08, 2008....
Well hotshit, when you boil away my bullshit, all that's left really is a a prick. ha...ha
  • hottips4u said on Mar 08, 2008....
Mobil : lol...I like that...going put that one away for future use.

I better stop before Alien tells us to get a room.  A room he can see into from his
    upstairs no doubt. hehe

    jessi.

Sean: read again. The numbers do not lie. It is not how many you subscribe to, it
is how many subscribe to you. Read em and weep. However, subscribing to everyone
in sight, as silverweenie, hunter, and moonriver have, tends to garner a certain
number of subscribers. When I first started, I was not subscribing to anyone. Hunter
called me a prick so I started subscribing to everyone, which is probably the reason
I have as many subscribers as I do. I dare say, many of the people subscribed to
any of us are no loner here.

Mobil / hottips: get a room.

465 views. Muaa haha ha ha. My view generator works. Now to work on my
automatic ID generator and bogus subscription program. I will be the very,
    vewry most popular poyson evwer.

(This is such a mature subject.)

  • ALIENated said on Mar 08, 2008....
Oh yeah, all you newbies better start subscribing to me so I will go back up on the
list (I was number 9 forever and have recently fallen to number 11). If I fall completely
off the front page list, I am leaving and taking my brilliant posts with me. I meant it.
I will leave, baby. Really. Do not try me. You will lose.

  • SeanRenaud said on Mar 08, 2008....
I know that ALIEN.  I was merely pointing out that myself and bloc have done rather well for ourselves despite the fact that we both subscribe to terribly vew people.  Neither of us pulled the Silver read and subscribe to anything.  Hell when I'm arguing with somebody on here I tell them if Silverwhisper isn't reading/sucbrsribing to you you're too low on the food chain for me to get into a fight with.
  • ALIENated said on Mar 08, 2008....

Alien : Why are you adding subscriptions together ?

I am just listing the raw numbers, which can be seen by looking at anyone's
blog (xxx reads blah blah blah, xxx is read by blah blah blah). I am adding the
two together simply to see if there are any patterns that account for the
order of the most popular list. The only thing that makes sense, where the
numbers go from largest to smallest (for the people mentioned) is the number
that read each of those people. So it is truly a most popular (who has the
most subsribers) list. And, yes, it is all just cold data used by the SoulCast
program. There is no accounting for whether the subscriber is real, still active,
actually someone else, whatever. So you could create as many IDs as you
want, like TheNuttyNakedProfessor (unless the Administrators have a way
of monitoring that), and subscribe to your original ID. Just as you could sit
around and open your latest post over and over to run up the views, which
seems to move your post to the front page.

When I become king, blogs with no posts for a certain amount of time will be
removed and unsubscribed from everyone. You can unsubscribe from people,
but you cannot unsubscribe them from you.

My God I may write a book about Most Popular blogger theory. Wonder if that
would make me a more popular blogger.

  • SeanRenaud said on Mar 08, 2008....
    Probably.
  • ALIENated said on Mar 08, 2008....

Sean: Oh, I see what you mean. You have acquired your readers in a much more
honorable way than silverweenie (I do not include Hunter because I honestly think
he was just trying to be nice to newbies). I do not remember exactly why I
unsubscribed from everyone, but I think it was partially for that reason, feeling
that I was just subscribing in order to be subscribed to. Plus, I was preparing to
leave here and go to a more politically oriented site. (I really do not care that
much for the Peyton Place goings on as of late, or the lovelorn stuff.)

I'm going to say yes I do, I think though that those people who are not here as in have not posted for so long and they have no posts should be taken off that list.

But then again I don't believe the list works, I'd prefer to see people up there that do a lot of blogging and get a lot of responses, which means that the list would change and often, I like that idea more than seeing a popularity contest.

Your right Alien, it does work.  I thought my post was doing steroids....lol
    Thats pretty darned nice...hehe

    Mr. ALIEN

As many here have proven, creating alts and using them for self-promotion will never alone make you popular.
Only good shit sticks to the wall. Crap just drips away. So alts or no alts, that's not the question. Nobody can alt their way into the hundreds of subscribers and thousands of hits categories unless they are mentally ill. And hottips is getting close, but no blunt yet.
They might get noticed, but not sustained. EVen I make it to the feature pages now and then, but people don't hang with me I guess because I'm such a specialist in my field and appeal only to refinded readerships and blah de dah de doh
ANd hey man, the posts should be left if they are still relevant. Some posts are timeless and if they keep drawing readers, they're new for every new reader and maybe they represent the best stuff here.

    ...here's the bong. Word.

Well, you dang sure have a good point there. However, many of the people
that are subscribed to other people come in, do some subscribing, do no
posting, and just disappear. If some ID has posts, by all means keep that ID.
If an ID has no posts and has been around for weeks (or some period of
time), delete the ID and all its subscriptions. Worse case, the person
recreates the ID and starts over.

Just a thought. I doubt it matters that much to the house.

    This just in ...

Another finding of this post ... posting about the Most Popular list will make you
more popular. I get over 500 views on this mundane post and sometimes no views
on my posts of substance and brilliance. Geeeezzz.

  • dyingman said on Mar 09, 2008....
    That and sex, I guess.
I did a post about stats too.

If people actually looked at their subscriptions (I have only 3) they'd drop the ones that don't post any more.  I have subscribed to 7 and dropped 4 when they didn't post for a month.

How many whiners actually read their 100+ posts?
How many of those have jobs?

You get views because you're honest and express yourself well, even if it is unpleasant at times.  That makes for good reading, thus...more subscribers.

Problem with popularity here is... it takes work.  Doesn't meritocracy suck?

    I do anything for aliens........

My popularity hasn't changed much since arriving here I'm still blogging because that list doesn't mean much to me at all and when I arrived here it meant even less!

Now my most important list is my conversations..... *-} so nice to be back here....

    ***hmmmmmmm*** satisfied sigh.

    Anything?

  • ALIENated said on Mar 20, 2008....
Hey, I am dropping further on the Most Popular list (hee haw). Actually, others
are continuining to get new subscribers, which sends them up ahead of me. No
problem. It is all kind of bogus anyway. Some are still ahead of me and have not
posted anything for weeks or months. Most have subscribers who came and went
and are not reading anyone. I dare say, it would all look different if people were
only subscribed to people they really read.

Has anybody ever gotten that feeling that you really really really want to type, or write...but yet you can't even think of what, or find the time? I've been having that the last few days but as of yet have not gotten to take care of it....
As a writer I hate throwing anything away....

The more things "change", the more they stay the same.

...
Can somebody please tell me where this myth began and what evidence there is backing it? It really seems like a lie that was just repeated until people decided to take it as fact and stop questioning it. Clearly there is absolutely no basis in reality...
