Last weekend when I was out and about I came across a crew relaying a pavement and they had just laid out the thick, steaming, black asphalt that they were about to start rolling flat, so I paused and inhaled deeply letting that amazing smell fill my nostrils completely.

And then I did it again. Breathing it in over and over again.

The blokes doing the pavement laying were mightily amused by my behaviour as every other pedestrian was rushing past holding their noses and making disgusted noises while I stood there as if breathing in the scent of the finest rose or perfume.

I joked with them that if anyone ever made aftershave that smelt like it I'd be in trouble as I find it totally irresistible and now I am wondering if there are any unusual aromas that you find irresistible too?

alyss- Most people don't like the odor of fresh paint - I love it.
  • rupert7 said on Mar 08, 2008....
alyss...... I just love the smell of horse manure! When I was a teenager and owned 2 horses,I used to muck all the stables (about 20 of them at least 3 times a week,) I love the smell!

I like the smell of cooking cauliflower.  Like beyond I also like the smell of fresh paint and when I was young I liked the smell of petrol. . .which made my mother quite worried; I wonder why? LOL!

Alyss........oh no, at all...i just love the smell of gasoline. It reminds me of the motorboats in the marina i spent my childhood....it reminds of the summers i spent cruising with my father's boat.

I sniff the ait when i put gas in the car...its almost, almost like that.

My daughter instead loves the smell of a brand new car.....:-)

  • beyondtheveil said on Mar 08, 2008....
ginsoul- My wife hates the smell of a new car. I didn't know there were people like that until her. Do you like the new car smell?
  • polarheart said on Mar 08, 2008....
Ahh, Gingersnap, I think what we call petrol in the UK you call gasoline in the US. . .right?  So we share that favourite smell :-)
  • kruuyai said on Mar 08, 2008....
Yuck!  Can't say I'm a big fan of the asphalt, but I do enjoy the smell of skunk...from a distance, that is.  Smells kind of lemony.
  • moonriver said on Mar 08, 2008....
alyss -- i'm with you in being an asphalt-smell addict. seriously. i think it has to do with some very memorable childhood experiences i had. in fact, i was meaning to write a new blog exactly on that topic.

When I was a little boy, I loved the smell of the exhaust coming out of my dads car. Gas was different back then. It had lead in it. Cars were different too, so it smelled different. I know I liked it. One time my dad was letting his car warm up before he left for work, and I layed down beside it and smelled the exhaust coming from the tailpipe. I have heard of people killing themselves that way. That was stupid. I don't do that anymore.

So what smells do you like Quiet?

beyond & polar I dislike the smell of fresh paint, it gives me headaches but appreciate the freshness of a newly decorated room.

ginger & polar, petrol has a certain something but it doesn't hit the spot for me I'm afraid. I liked the smell of a new car when it was my new car I was admiring. ;-)

rupert, I like the piquancy of a stable and the smell of horse but sadly my allergies prevent me getting too close these days.

kruu, I've never smelt a skunk so I can't offer an informed opinion but if it smells anything like ferret then ew!

    moon! Yay! Another asphalt appreciator!

Mr.S, can't say I enjoy the smell of exhaust fumes myself. I'm glad you don't do that anymore.

Alyss ~ one of my favorite smells is fresh laundered sheets that have line dried outside!
  • rupert7 said on Mar 08, 2008....
Alyss....... Ah! little did i imagine the day would arrive when I would be unable to ride anymore....we just have to adjust to the changes that come along though! ;-))

Alyss, that's one smell I choke over, lol!

I guess one smell that I really like is if someone burns bagged popcorn in the microwave.

I'm looking forward to the smell of short spring sun showers.  I just love that smell, but doesn't everyone?

Permanent markers...  I like to draw myself a mustache(not intentionally, though).

I always equate the smell of cut grass mixed with gasoline with summer.  It's just not until I smell it, you know?  :)
  • quietone said on Mar 09, 2008....
Grape ~ oh, oooo.. yes I like fresh new permanent marker smell too!  A couple of us do that all the time at work... look for the freshest marker... (we don't draw the mustache thing though.  LOL
  • GrapeKoolaid said on Mar 09, 2008....
quiet:  Well, it's because I smell them so close that the mustache gets drawn acidentally.  It usually starts off with a Charlie Chaplin mustache, but after prolonged exposure, it becomes these large handlebar mustaches like the villains of the silent film era...  Muhahahaha...  :D

    Oh that and rubber cement....
  • gingersoul said on Mar 09, 2008....

    Pollie...how cool is that?...{hug}

Alyss....i forgot...Vicks Vaporub....sometimes i put some under my nose just to smell it for the pleasure of it....it reminds me of my childhood...when i had the flu and my mom would let me stay all day in her bed.....great...

  • Alyss said on Mar 09, 2008....
daily, the smell of microwave popcorn, burnt or otherwise, sends me running from the room at full tilt. It's revolting!

quiet, I like that smell too. Roll on the good weather I say.

rupert, my daughter went riding recently and my allergy has become so bad that just being in the car with her for 5 minutes afterwards was enough to have my sneezing and sniffling all day. =(

Marker pen sniffing  for you is it GK?  Do you like the ones that are supposed to have specific fragrances or is it just the neat alcohol ones?

ginger, Vicks I can understand; it's strangely comforting so long as you don't rub it into your eyes.

    blue, that's really sweet.
  • GrapeKoolaid said on Mar 09, 2008....
No artificial fragrances necessary...  Just the straight up permanent marker please...  [breathes deeply through the nose]  Ahh....  That's the stuff...  Dang it, I got a spot under my nose again...
  • Mr.Stupid said on Mar 09, 2008....
When I was a boy I liked the smell of papers that came off of the copying machine at school. I believe they were xerox or something like that.
Whenever it was my turn to help the teacher hand out papers, she would give me a fresh stack, and they would still be warm. I thought they smelled really good.
  • silverwhisper said on Mar 10, 2008....
i'll confess i find the smell of asphalt kinda pleasant--ditto, railroad ties. i guess it's the tar?

i also like the smell of model cement. :D

I don't know why,but the smell from a idling diesel motor makes me sad, you know,a bus or coach,eg Greyhound. Must be some subconscious  association I suppose but it make me sad!

  • Alyss said on Mar 11, 2008....
Permanent markers make me feel dizzy Grape so I'm not sure if I like them or not...

Ah, ed, another who appreciates the finer points of asphalt. ;-)

MrS, do you mean the old heat copiers that were pre photocopiers? They had a particular smell about them from the carbon/ink paper used.

Rupert, idling diesel makes me cough and wheeze so I try to avoid inhaling it. It's interesting how particular smells have associations for us.
  • GrapeKoolaid said on Mar 11, 2008....
LOL.  I used to know some kids that used to huff glue...  They'd line the bottom of a ziploc bag and breathe into it(PLEASE DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME KIDS).  This one time, this kid got up, started freaking out!  He started convulsing, running around the room...  One of my friends threw a lacrosse ball at him and it bounced off his head!  He had felt nothing.  He calmed down after a bit of fresh air eventually, but it was scary...

Seal coat seals the asphalt pavement, preventing the oxidation and erosion of the top layer of asphalt. On older pavements seal coating replaces fine particles lost from the asphalt surface due to oxidation. Seal coat seals the small cracks that can turn...
