Implicit Association Test
What are implicit attitudes? What are explicit attitudes? Well first off, what exactly is an attitude? According to most dictionaries, an attitude is a mental state or emotional feeling regarding something. Implicit means implied, or not directly expressed. So an implicit attitude is an attitude you don’t openly express. Sometimes you aren’t even conscious you have the attitude, or you are just too embarrassed to admit it. Explicit is the antonym of implicit, so it’s going to be the exact opposite. Unlike implicit attitudes, explicit attitudes are directly expressed, and publicly stated.
I don’t think you came out of the womb with implicit attitudes. I don’t believe someone could be born with a prejudice against another race. I believe they are taught. I believe implicit attitudes come from your society: The way you where brought up, the media, the culture and folk groups that surround you on a daily basis.
