Rock-a-bye baby, on the tree top
When the wind blows, the cradle will rock
When the bough breaks, the cradle will fall
And down will come baby, cradle and all

I love singing my daughters to sleep. . .the above lullaby is a favourite. My girls simply adore the melody and they don´t really mind the meaning of the words. It amuses them.

They are growing up polylingual; although, I speak to them in English, I do sing Filipino and German songs as well. Below is a famous lullaby here in Germany, and it´s English version.

Guten Abend, gute Nacht,
(German Version)
Guten Abend, gute Nacht,
mit Rosen bedacht,
mit Näglein besteckt,
schlüpf unter die Deck:
Morgen früh, wenn Gott will,
wirst du wieder geweckt,
morgen früh, wenn Gott will,
wirst du wieder geweckt.

Guten Abend gute Nacht,
von Englein bewacht,
die zeigen im Traum
dir Christkindleins Baum:
Schlaf nur selig und süß,
schau im Traum's Paradies,
schlaf nur selig und süß,
schau im Traum's Paradies.

Brahm´s Lullaby
(English Version)
Lullaby and good night, with roses bedight
With lilies o'er spread is baby's wee bed
Lay thee down now and rest, may thy slumber be blessed
Lay thee down now and rest, may thy slumber be blessed

Lullaby and good night, thy mother's delight
Bright angels beside my darling abide
They will guard thee at rest, thou shalt wake on my breast
They will guard thee at rest, thou shalt wake on my breast

My song of the heart is the one below. . .

Oh! inay

In English (translation from the link above):

I hope that my old days will never fade
As a small child in my mother's arms
I wish to hear again my beloved mother's songs
Songs of love while I was in the cradle

(repeat)

In my deep, deep slumber
My keepers are the stars
The stars are my guardians
In my mother's arms
Life is heaven
My heart full of pain
Longs to rock in your arms again Mother
Mother, I wish you were here

I hope that my old days will never fade
As a small child in my mother's arms
I wish to hear again my beloved mother's songs
Songs of love while I was in the cradle

Were you saying good morning to me (Guten Morgen. . .?) or was it a German song that started with good morning ? = )

As I posted this it was already very early in the morning here in Germany. . .

: ( around 6:30 am. . .yeah, I need someone to cradle me to sleep and sing me

a lullaby, I have not been sleeping normally for months now. . .

What was your favourite lullaby wombie?

    ginger ~

Ginge! Buona sera I hope you are doing well  soulsistah : X , and  work is going

    smoothly!?!

    {giggle}

We have a children´s rhyme in Filipino that is in the same spirit!

Did you also sing any English lullaby to her, Ginge?

    Lioness ~

    LOL!

Oh yeah, the the ultimate blog challenge, being able to say goodnight

simultaneously to everyone here in their different time zones...

I have not heard this song for a long time dear Lioness, it brought tears to my

eyes listening to it again. . .I sung it this morning to our little one. . .

Do you have a lullaby in Filipino, you could share?

. . .and when you read this it will be :

    Magandang umaga, po! :D

    Grape ~

. . .yeah [blush] I was really bad and did not sleep the whole night soulbrother. . .

I confuzzled you by saying good night in your blog, when it was already good

    morning here!

So you were right in greeting me good morning (Guten Morgen) in your blog of

    last night! LOL

Hope you´ll have time to relax tonight; have a nice evening!

Oh do you remember a lullaby that your mom sang?  I bet she sings to your very
    cute nephew! : )

    Quality ~

    Goede avend!

I hope you were not late for work . . .listening to a lullaby before setting off to

work is indeed counterproductive {giggle} XD.

    Dank je wel . . .

. . .tonight is another night. . .another attempt to sleep soundlessly, and

    peacefully. . .

    Welterusten, schat. . .kusje

Any dutch lullaby, you could share Quality?

    Lucy ~

G´day Lucy . . .I surmise, you will read this like Lioness, and queenie in the

    middle of the afternoon!

But a 5-15 minute nap during the day, a lot of people say, are very conducive to

a clear mind and a healthy body. . .so let me sing you a lullaby for your

    afternoon nap, love. . .

    rock a bye Lucy. . .down under trilllleeeeee [giggle}

[ hug and cradles Lucy, and places a kiss on Lucy´s forehead]

    Sweet Paper,

I know how it is to have sleepless nights.
I have some of my own solutions that work for me.
But that doesn't say they work for everyone.
When I have a bad night I (I read this once) put my
    hands on my solar plexus.
I tend to put my right shin under my left knee
but the solar plexus move is supposed to make your
breathing relaxed. and after a few minutes my brain
shuts down, where it was busy before that.
But you have to take your time
and not wait for it to happen.

If this doesn't help you, maybe these will.

Knowing how those nights are, I wish you a
SWEET SLEEP  My Dearest Paper and I will sing to you:....

    Slaap, kindje, slaap,
    daar buiten loopt een schaap.
    Een schaap met witte voetjes,
dat drinkt zijn melk zo zoetjes.
    Slaap, kindje, slaap,
    daar buiten loopt een schaap.

    or....

Schaapje, schaapje, heb je witte wol?
Ja baas, ja baas, drie zakken vol.
    Eén voor de meester,
    en één voor zijn vrouw,
    één voor het kindeke
    dat bibbert van de kou.
Schaapje schaapje heb je witte wol?
Ja baas, ja baas, drie zakken vol.

    one more, my Paper.....

    Schattekind, schattekind,
    knuffel- knuffel- knuffel- knuffelkind,
    zonnekind, sterrekind,
    jij bent m'n liefste kind!

    Lentekind, zomerkind,
    brabbelkind en babbelkind,
    liedjeskind, boekenkind,
    jij bent m'n liefste kind!

    Wiegekind, wandelkind,
    tranenkind en schaterkind,
    hapjeskind, trappelkind,
    jij bent m'n liefste kind!

    Ochtendkind, avondkind,
    lieve kleine doedeldijnekind,
    schattekind, knuffelkind
    jij bent m'n liefste kind!

    Welterusten, mijn lieve schat

PAPERBACKWRITER:   Guten Morgen....I was trying to remember a little of the sad few words of German I used to know....  and to say good morning!  Not really a lullabye, but my mother used to sing "You Are My Sunshine" alot, and I ended up singing it alot to my son when he was little.  He fell asleep to that quite alot--maybe to escape from the noise....ha....
  • PAPERBACKWRITER said on Mar 01, 2008....

I sang "You Are My Sunshine", to first born daughter, dear wombie (PLEASE call me paper, that is an order! lol {kiss}) as I held her for the first time in my arms after giving birth to her!

It was to prevent me from crying out loud!

    :_ )

    teary-eyed,

    paper

  • wombat said on Mar 01, 2008....
Ok "PAPER".....I still get tears in my eyes when I hear that song.  Wish I could go back and have a day to hold him when he was little and sing it to him again.

    Thanks
    wombie
