So where do you stand on gun control exactly?

Do you own any fire arms? If so, what kind?

Alot of posts lately are spinning my poor head around tonight like that spinning "C" was earlier.  I wish I knew more and was qualified to answer better.  But this one I can answer--we own guns as Mr. W. is into hunting and has one "show pistol" that he has never fired.  I am not against guns being owned by the private sector.  I am against what some people do with them.  Over-simplified, I know.  Gun control?  You can control the sale of guns.  You can't control the people who have them.  Someone help me out here.

Here is a simple question..but the answer is probably not so simple. If there were no "gun clubs," and if guns were not sold to the public at all, would there be less violence on the streets? I am not so sure! Here in Australia, where gun ownership is not as common as it is in other places, there are knife attacks in the absence of firearms. Of course a gun can kill more people and faster than someone wielding a knife. I don't know. And to be honest,I don't know why any civilian should own a gun in the first place?? If no one owned a gun,no one would get shot would they? The Port Arthur "killing field," where 36 innocent people were slaughtered would not have happened, for example. And how many people have been killed on campus in the USA. If people did not have guns they could not do that. Of course if they are a mental case they might find some other way! In my humble opinion, anyone who thinks he has the right and need to own  a gun, also thinks he has the right to kill people with it. Really what are guns for? shooting tin cans off the fence post? Don't think so! Defending yourself? Probably the quickest was to get shot is to pull a gun on somone already holding one! Its time to lose the "wild west" mentality. If you are not a cop or a soldier, you don't need a gun. In some places anyone can buy or access a gun...and then ya wonder why there are so many shootings - Duh!!!

We have gun control here in Canada. Its cost us many millions of dollars and doesnt work with a darn. The system has managed to make it difficult for the people who want guns for legitimate reasons such as hunting. The 'bad' guys can get them in darn near any city they want. So as far as I can tell all that has been accomplished is the good guys have their guns registered.

    rupert....yes....weapon of choice....whatever is available.

I have a 22 rifle and a double barrel 12 guage shotgun in my closet....they were my dads.....and I have no ammo for them.....I wouldn't even want to fire the shotgun.....but I have considered getting a handgun.

I definately think that the process in getting a gun license should be more strict....I mean if you have to take drivers training for a couple of months to drive a car......then why not at least a week of gun training to get a gun license?

Outlawing guns would never work.....the only ones left with them would be outlaws!

As far as the school shooting go, I think the over prescription of anti-depressants in this country play a vital role.

I happen to believe that if everyone had guns, we'd all be nice to each other.  At least we'd be forced to be polite and civil to each other...  Besides, you take guns away, and the only ones that'll have guns will be the cops, the army and the criminals.  That would make the citizenry powerless.
  • rupert7 said on Feb 29, 2008....
D6fer - I here quote you..."Outlawing guns would never work.....the only ones left with them would be outlaws!"..... Now in the US there seem to be a lot of College campus shootings,in which a lot of students get shot and killed. Who do the shooters usually prove to be? "outlaws' as you call them? - NO. Is it  usually students or ex students, with or without mental problems. Now according to your own statement, that could not happen if guns were outlawed. I have to be fair and say that outlawing guns will never work,in that if someone really wants one,he will get it,probably  from the criminals! But if guns were outlawed it would at least make it harder!

My husband's a retired cop, so, yeah, we have guns in our home--six, to be exact. One of them is his former service weapon, which he was able to purchase for $1 when he retired, but he has other handguns and shotguns as well. Some of them are employer-issued commemorative weapons that have been fired at least once, but they're mostly for show. The 75th-anniversary weapons can be ordered now, and they're pretty snazzy.

Ohio has just recently "celebrated" the fourth year of allowing citizens to obtain concealed-carry permits. Those folks weren't the ones shooting people.

I have no idea where I stand on this issue.
I was never raised around guns.  Nobody in my entire family and extended family owns a gun.  But, I understand why people would want a gun...hunting or "sport."

My Parents were telling us just last night that two hunters knocked on the door to ask to run through their property to chase a deer.  They had shot the deer, but the deer didn't go down.  I thought it was nice of them to have respect for the laws and ask to be able to go through the property while armed.  My Mother let them, only because the hunters didn't want the deer to suffer, and neither did my mother.  However, it is kind of scary to know that the huters are shooting so close to homes.  I thought they used arrows when hunting deer...guess I was wrong.

I don't like guns. Never have. I've met a few idiots who I'm surprised haven't shot themselves yet. But outlawing guns won't stop a criminal from getting a gun.

Gun owners should be required to take a manditory gun safety course to get a gun license. Five day waiting period before you can get a handgun is fine with me.

I think there should be increased security in schools.

Where I live every farmer has a gun, for pigs (wild boars) and getting rid of pest animals eating crops ~ used to scare off rather than kill.

I agree with Rupert, making it difficult to own a gun will tend to move these purchases underground, if you really want one you will find one, but for the average Joe owning a gun isn't a necessity, it simply isn't.  If you want a gun you have the intention of using it, simple as that.

Given the right circumstances as in sport, hunting under supervision which is legal and the correct storage and licensing of guns doesn't mean they will not be used, stolen for the purpose of killing.

    I am totally against them.

I agree with Rupert, Kelly.  I think coptips4u has made tremendous strides in mastering our language in the few hours since she introduced herself as a Latina police officer barely able to speak English.  If only she hadn't removed that post you would see how far she's come.
I imagine her younger sister is just pleased as punch for her.
    Shame on you, Kelly...tsk, tsk.
  • kelly said on Feb 29, 2008....
Oh, if that really is the case then I apologize.  I assumed that coptips4u was an alter ego of another person around here.  Still, I believe that the full stop punctuation mark is rather well known in Latin America.  :-)
  • D6fer said on Feb 29, 2008....
I can certainly understand why some people might think they need a gun......circumstances in my own life have changed recently, and I am seriously considering getting one.

honestly, although i'm a liberal i support gun ownership, b/c all gun control does is take the weapons away from the law-abiding.
