  Let's see, just recently, I waded through the muck and mire of Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen).  It was a painful, but joyful read.
  Then I tackled Sense and Sensability. It took over a month because it kept putting me to sleep.  It was like verbal Sominex!
  No one could accuse Austen of being thoughtless and poorly written.
  That being said, no post here has ever lulled me to sleep.

  None of my blogs are particularly thought provoking either. I just write what I feel like writing. To me, that's what a blog is supposed to be. And if you feel like writing intense philosophical questions, then cool. But if you feel like writing about what you had for breakfast, that's cool too! I'm more apt to find enjoyment in trivial things than something deep and meaningful anyway. To each his own, and if someone doesn't like what a person writes, they don't have to read it.   Well I've complained (mostly to myself) about the decline of posting quality on soulcast, and although I haven't read the complaint that you're referring to... as I read this post and through most of the comments, it seems like many of you are taking the criticism personally and possibly misinterpreting it.  (I can't say for sure, because I don't know what people have said).  But I would say that a post doesn't necessarily have to be thought provoking or intellectual in order to be a quality post.  Rather than thought provoking, it could be emotion provoking, for example, and I'd get just as much out of reading it.  Posts about daily life are valuable both to the person who writes the post and to people who read it, either because they can relate to it or gain a different perspective.  Silly and humorous posts are also valuable. 
  
  What is both disappointing and irritating to me, however, is how the site seems to have become overrun by bickering and desperate attempts to gain "popularity" (either by bickering or by posting "simple questions" and "polls" that nobody cares about, including the person who posted.  I'll bet for most of those polls that draw a huge response, especially the multiple choice type, the poster doesn't even bother to read the comments.   If these things popped up only occasionally, it would be okay with me, but really, this seems to be what the majority of posts are on some days.   I actually considered publishing a post asking SCers to take a pledge to do away with polls and simple questions... or to post forwarded emails.  I would much rather read the most poorly written, un-well-thought-out rant, whine, or joyous news that comes straight from the poster's heart and life experience than that kind of meaningless drivel which is really nothing more than filler.

  The specific post I'm talking about bemoaned the fact that there were very few blogs with for example, political commentary or some other intellectual discourse (although, it could be argued that American politics and intellectual discourse are mutually exclusive terms).  If I remember correctly, the author specifically mentioned slice-of-life or happy news posts as being boring.

  I agree with you about the bickering and popularity contests.  Sometimes I'll read one of those posts, and marvel at how supposedly responsible adults can act like they're still in high school.

  Of course, now you've made me re-think a post I was working on:  Toilet Paper -- Over or Under:  My Take on the Subject.  ;)

  Mimi:  Hi!  Somebody's actually "on" at the same time as me... que milagro!  I suppose everyone has their own idea of what's interesting and what's boring, but as long as the person who's posting is writing about something that's interesting to them.. that's all that's important.  A lot of us blog as a form of therapy, or just because it has to get out through our fingertips before we can move on with our lives...  American politics and intellectual discourse.... well, yeah, that could sometimes be considered the original oxymoron, couldn't it?  :)  Still, I'm glad when someone puts one up.  I enjoy a good debate from time to time.  And other times, I couldn't care less. 
  
  On the toilet paper thing.... so much is in the presentation.  I'm sure if anyone can find a way to make it interesting, you can.  :)

  Kruu -- It is a form of therapy for me too.  Nothing like a good whiny rant to set you up for the day!  And I like reading the debates too, I guess, but they almost always end up with one person, usually the author, calling a commenter that disagrees with him a doodyhead, and then all hell breaks loose.  Doodyheadedness is all in the eye of the beholder, I suppose.

  By the way, I've decided to forsake the tp blog in favor of paper towels.

  Moonie --  You may need to lower your expectations a bit.  I can't keep up this kind of commenting forever, y'know.  It would ruin my reputation.  ;)  You could always join in the discussion.

  you know i agree with much of what you're saying here (in general terms, without prejudging any individual blogger). and your writings are consistently among the most solid and insightful ones. if i don't read some in full, it's  only due to one reason: THEY ARE SO LOOOOOONG! but don't shorten them unnecessarily, lady. your blogs are YOU. and i get around to reading them eventually. :-)

  ed:  I don't really manage my subscription list, but I still hold onto hopes that you'll one day go back to your old habits.  In the past, you had some very thoughtful posts, and I'd love to see that happen again.  Why the change?  And BTW, although I did have you in mind when I mentioned polls and simple questions, I didn't have only you in mind.  If there were only one person here doing it, it wouldn't be a problem, but unfortunately, you may have started the trend.  Maybe you can reverse it too... if you want to.

  Z:  The fact that there are some polls and simple question posts isn't what bothers me, per se.  As you said, I don't have to read them, and I usually don't.  (and yes, I have found some of ed's simple question posts to have more to them than simple questions... and others not).  But my complaint is that these types of posts (at some times more than others) seem to have taken over soulcast, and i find it depressing, when I'm looking for some interesting posts to read and comment on, and I can't find anything other than silly polls about what kind of underwear I wear or if I prefer jam or preserves.  That's not what soulcast was like when I joined, and I'm disappointed in the trend it's taken.  And, as I said above... ed is, by far, not the only one who indulges in this.  Gotta go to work.  Bye.

  kruu, i wrote those when i was commuting. i don't have the luxury of 1 uninterrupted hour twice/day during which i can write. my fiction writing's more or less stopped entirely since i stopped commuting as well, and frankly that's a loss that matters a whole metric buttload more to me than my blogging.
  
  as to whether or not my more recent blog entries are or aren't thoughtful, i suppose that's all in the eye of the beholder--and as super z observes, potentially dependent upon how attentive that eye really is.

  ed:  Don't you think you're being a bit melodramatic?  As I've already stated several times, my comment was about soulcast as a whole, and where it's going.  That's why I'm expressing my opinion about those types of posts in general.  Seriously, if you were browsing around for a new place to blog and saw a featured posts page like the kind that more and more frequently pop up at SC... dominated by polls, popularity contests and bickering, would you be likely to linger?  I wouldn't.  It's only because of the relationships that I've formed here that I stay.  And because I know that if I look hard enough or wait long enough, I'll find the type of posts that I'm looking for.  But I'd say that there's very little these days to entice a newcomer.  Not like there used to be, anyway.  And let's face it... we could be in serious danger of losing this site.  There never seem to be more than a couple of hundred bloggers active here at any given time, and considering all the alts that people seem to have, who knows?  Maybe only half that.  How long can the site survive if it's so underused?  Isn't attracting new members vital to keeping the site alive? 
  
  That said, I've been guilty of posting my share of silly, simple questions as well.  I well remember the last one (or at least I hope it was the last one).  It was in response to a post that queenparanoia did on the subject of fluff, and just to be sassy, I ran over to my post and did a fluff post called "Do You Look Better Naked or In a Bikini?" and then watched with horror as it climbed into the ranks of my most popular posts.  lol  I think that was when I decided not to do it anymore and even thought about issuing a challenge to all SCer's to take a pledge not to post any more polls.  Never got around to it, though.
  
  So, in sum, my dear ed, my statement was general and not only aimed at you.  Did I hope to attract your attention?  Yes, I did.  Because I've actually been meaning to ask you for a while, what had happened.  And now, you've explained it.  I can certainly understand time constraints, and I can also understand making other things a priority.  Especially if you want to make writing a career.  I met a poet not long ago, and when I told him that I do a lot of blogging, he said that was bane to a writer's career.  I'd have to say I agree with him.  If I spent a fraction of the time working on my novel or play as I do posting here, I'd have accomplished something by now.
  
  I have to say I'm surprised that you did all that blogging before while you were commuting.  From the sheer volume, I couldn't even believe that one single person, even one who didn't have a job, could possible post and comment as much as you did.  Do you remember when I was living with Boss Lady in Poland?  I only worked five hours a week on Saturdays, and I had pretty much made SC a full time job, and I still couldn't even begin to keep up with your rate of posting or commenting.  I know you said you type fast, but so do I. 
  
  So, anyway, I understand why your style has changed.  It doesn't change my opinion about the types of posts I mentioned, though, and when have you ever known me to shy away from expressing my opinion?  I wouldn't be me if I did.
