I'm sure those of you who know me have already figured out that I'm a little koo koo for cocoapuffs when it comes to doing things or making things for myself.  I will insanely spend more time and money to make something that I could easily buy for half the price and a fraction of the effort.  In a zen moment this weekend I tried to analyze why it is that people tend to put higher value on hand made items.

If you were to look at it from a logical standpoint you might have to concede that making something yourself often is not cost effective and/or suffers in quality.  There are many things that I might be capable of making that someone or a company might do a better job at.

So, here are the questions:

1) Do you prefer hand made things over store bought?

2) What things would you buy rather than make?

3) Are you willing to pay more for hand/home made items?

I'll put my two cents in later.

    1) Do you prefer hand made things over store bought?

Honestly...it depends on what it is and the craftmanship.  Wood work in furniture and such, I like hand made, although most hand made furniture that is SOLD in a store is better quality than the mass produced.  Things such as blanket, quilts I would rather have hand-made.  But I do like a lot of things store bought rather than made.

    2) What things would you buy rather than make?
Clothes I would rather have manufactured by machines, light fixtures (long story), parts for vehicles (more long stories).....there are a lot of things that I think benefit from mass machine production

    3) Are you willing to pay more for hand/home made items?

Only if the craftmanship is of quality.  I do think a lot of hand/home made items are much  more beautiful than manufactured ones.  Oh and home made food always wins over store bought!

well lets see, I like hand made stuff because somehow someway you can feel the love that went into it. I would not usually set out to look for a certain handmade thing, but I find them as treasures along the way. I used to think I would never buy a hand made garment until I stumbled into a dress shop along the Main Line of Phila. where the designer was sewing a black velvet tuxedo style suit...near the fron t of her show room.

I have owned it for years now and delight in the wearing of it every holiday season...I also have a handmade cabinet in my bath...a handmade garden table on my patio...I typically have not had to pay much more...I may pay more if the design was striking enough.

I prefer to buy hand made too.  It is much more personal than something that was made in china. Hand made is usually made by someone who has pride in what the do.  I like that.

tizzy - craftsmanship does count.  I do have to say though, that home made food is NOT always better than store bought ;) (very long story)

Mamie - I agree that stumbling across something hand made sure adds to the feeling that it is a treasure.

quietone - There are hand made things that just scream master craftsman to me.  One of the things I still own that screams "I love you!" is a plate my son made for mother's day in kindergarten.  It's beautifully primitive and brimming with love.

    1) Do you prefer hand made things over store bought?

I prefer giving things I've made.  If someone makes something just for me, I really love that.

    2) What things would you buy rather than make?

    Quilts

    3) Are you willing to pay more for hand/home made items?

Yes, sometimes.  It depends on how beautiful it is and how much extra money I have to spend.

CW - I love giving hand made things too, though lately I seem to run short on time to make them.

) Do you prefer hand made things over store bought?
depends on the item.  i know my limitations, so if i see something i think i can make myself, and i have the time to do it, i like to make it myself.

i'm good with dried flowers, so i make my front door wreaths, and different garlands for the foyer and the mantle of the fireplace.

i'm decent with faux painting, so i've done flower pots, etc.

i like to go to craft shows.  some of the things i've enjoyed most have come from craft shows.

i bought a set of hand painted wine glasses i love-
also a set of glasses done with weld and beads....

i actually bought a 2nd set of those glasses to give as an engagement gift.

    2) What things would you buy rather than make?

        i never make clothes.
everyday items i tend to buy-
special items i tend to buy handmade

    3) Are you willing to pay more for hand/home made items?
         yes.  because it's a more one-of-a-kind purchase.

Uni- Yeah you are so right....I was thinking about people who could ACTUALLY cook.  I should have known better.  I don't happen to fall under that catagory...so again, depends on the craftmanship lol!

SL - I'm a big fan of craft shows too.  I do have to be careful though since I tend to buy first and check the bank balance afterward. :(

tizzy - me too, I'm not what you would call "gifted" in the kitchen.

uniquely ~ I was surprised to see an ash try I had made my mother in 7th grade (that was rather crude looking) She kept it for 40 years!  When she died that was all I wanted was that ash try.....little did I know she had quit smoking and the ash tray was thrown out :(
  • uniquely-ironic said on Feb 26, 2008....
quietone - How sweet to think your mom kept your hand made ash tray.  I know how much I love the things my kids make me.  I have quite a collection of really ugly items that mean the world to me.

I was so heartbroken to find out after all those years... it was gone!  I had put my name and date on the bottom of it llike 1962 I think...hey it would have been an antique!  LOL  I also love going to craft shows, but have a hard time buying things as I always say "oh, I can make that myself"...but never do.
